Sorry, I've had some upheaval in my life recently and its been hard finding time to get on. Anyways, I like Sakamichi a lot but it I think it squanders a bit of its potential. Without getting into spoilers, Sakamichi has 3 super interesting directions it could go. It could dig more into its unique setting of late 60s to late 70s Japan, it could dig more into the friendship between the 2 main characters, or it could dig more into the musical side of the show. I think it does enough of all 3 to be satisfying but its hard to not wish there were more of the musical collaboration scenes. Whenever those scenes are on, you can't look away. If you're fine with a romance that uses those 3 elements as pieces to fill out the narrative and world, its probably right up your alley. But if you don't find the main romance that compelling, you might be a bit frustrated with the direction it goes in. Probably best to watch it and decide for yourself.
Sorry, its taking me a while to get through it. Takes me forever to finish shows nowadays.
Ironically, episode 18 is hands down my favorite. Even given that a lot of the dialogue is really schmaltzy and feels ham-fisted, the direction of the scene between Canute and the priest is amazing. The dialogue is incredibly poignant, and I could not for the life of me predict what they were going to say next. The main problem I have with Canute's arc though is that it happens all at once, when it never really felt like that was the way his arc should be resolved. His problem was he was babied and sheltered, and lacked the grit and fortitude necessary to lead. That...isn't something you get over by talking to a drunk guy about god. Pretty ridiculous but the dialogue itself and the direction kinda make me willing to overlook it. Not getting any points or losing any, if you feel me.
Feels like its going to be one of those shows that shines in the early and late stages but drags on in the middle. Looking like an 8 with 4 episodes left. Will tell you when I finish the whole thing
Extremely based. I know people like to complain about the 3d animation but the way I look at is that its *interesting*. Interesting 3d animation that's inspired can trump boring, generic 2d animation. Just gotta present it correctly and know your limitations. And Beastars knows both and nails it. I could kinda look at Dorohedoro from last season as how you don't do it. Camerawork is too aggressive and the choreography is too much for what they're working with. Plus ugly character models. Either way Beastars was great! I'd agree, best of 2019.
I think its best quality is the characters, yeah. Best of the bunch being Legosi. I relate pretty strongly to his absurd empathy towards weaker animals and incredible anxiety towards basically every social interaction. High in my faves for a reason. Because he's basically me irl lmao
Vinland surpassed it during its first 5 episodes but it tapers off towards the middle. I'm still sluggish towards finishing it. Thorfinn's characterization has really flattened out in a way that I quite dislike. I thought they were gonna do a whole "watch how violence messes up this child" thing but they go a different way. Wanna avoid spoilers but...oh you finished it. Its probably the second or third best from last year depending on what my mood is regarding Sarazanmai on any given day. Still need to finish it, but I'm not really as interested in it now that its focused more on Askeladd, blehhhh
