Yeah the MajiKoi anime was pretty awful.
If you want a good show, then go for anything that I give above a 7.
But I did enjoy the soundtrack that MajoKoi offered; a mixture of impressionistic-styled music, alongside sentimental tracks when it mattered resounded. It had a fantastic, novel concept, it just didn't execute it 'well' enough.
As to Zero no Tsukaima, it's probably a hit or miss for most people. I try to enjoy each show as to what they try to accomplish; I don't try to strictly scrutinize a show for plot if it bases itself off of fun interaction. Of course, that show may be predisposed to score lower, but it won't be judged unfairly.
I don't know many 'mechanical' circlejerks when it comes to visual novels. When it comes to anime, there's Mononoke and Tekkon Kinkreet are the ones that immediately come into mind. Their characters, and the themes and plots that they present are objectively-solid. But their characters are bereft of the sentiments typically afforded to sympathy, and the plot line serves to advance the plot, than to serve as a medium to move the storyline in a concise, yet reasonable manner.
When I read or watch a work, two things pull me in. The characters, and the mood of the series. The characters make up the series; they're the factor that prevents a well-written, insightful work from being categorized as a mechanical circlejerk, or testament to capability of writing/expression [meaning, we need the human in our media]. And there's the mood of the series. The type of work that makes you want to read more, that makes you dream at night when you sleep. ZeroTsuki was a healthy mixture of the two factors that I like the most. If you notice my quantitative ascriptions to it, they're relatively high, but not the highest. Objectively, I can find error after error in its presentation. But because I've grown attached to the characters, whether it'd be the protagonist, Saitou, whose cognitive function is nonpareil among single-cellular organisms, or even the assertive group of side characters that find it opportune to intervene with the primary romance at every instance. Because I like the characters, and because I like the mood of the series, it's an ineffable favorite of mine.
I don't really expect most people to like it. If the first season isn't likable, then the rest of the show probably won't be.
What were you thoughts on MajoKoi?
