The first Episodes and the following first Episodes can be quite average.
I know that it can be for many people. So maybe for you as well.

But it will improve a lot afterwards.

Ik ben MAL aan het afstruinen om Nederlanders te zoeken die in een gezellige Skype groep willen. :) Het is echt geen drukke club en we zijn ook anti-spoiler, mocht je daar bang voor zijn haha. Af en toe hebben we ook skype calls maar dat is voor wie dat leuk vindt natuurlijk. Het is niet alleen praten over anime, maar ook van games tot fitness, etc.!

Yes. I didn't really like her in the first two arcs, but she had some good character backstory in this one. Looking forward to more.
And I get the manga out of the library. In official translation its only at halfway through arc 3. And from what I've compared online, the official English translation is far superior to any fan translation that I've seen. The 2nd volume of 3 and the 3 volumes of arc 4 will be out this year. Should be awesome.

As for Higurashi, here's my thoughts on it. It's his first work, and it clearly shows an improvement in Umineko, but Higurashi is a different series entirely, and while it may be a little more disturbing, it is still worth reading.

Higurashi~ When the Cicadas Cry (The Anime is a decent work if you only watch the first two seasons, the Neko OVA, and the Outbreak OVA. Anything else isn't worth it and is a different genre. Manga is FAR Superior, but its scarier, so its your call. In any case the mystery is awesome, but it can be gory and disturbing at times.)
If you can handle it, then its worth reading. If you can't, just go back to Umineko. Plus I heard he made a few other manga series. Look into them. They look awesome.
