Hello~ I'm Kaori_x_Kousei but I do think it's too long so I came up with the name Kouri, it's a combination of Kousei and Kaori (completely opposite with my name haha) or is Kaosei much better? please do tell me your opinion but I guess it'll be very inconvenient for me to change it all of a sudden since most of my friends do call me that and almost all the cards I collected are named with Kouri so haha~

In Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, every time a comedy scene happened, it seemed disjointed with what the rest of the Anime was trying to do. I understand wanting it done to alleviate the seriousness of the show, but I felt it could have been done much better in that regard. So that is my main nitpick with this show.

However...

Everything else was incredible. The characters, their depth, their storylines, their development. How the Anime builds up to the climactic moment of the last episode with the letter. It was all done perfectly. The music, the animation, the way everything was handled... I was in awe.

What I specifically like about this Anime is that all three major characters have always been in the "friendzone". And by this, I mean lacking the confidence to approach who they like and just saying what they feel. Kousei felt he could never be wanted or loved by Kaori, Tsubaki felt she had lost Kousei because of Kaori and Kaori felt she never had a chance with Kousei due to the bond that Kousei and Tsubaki had since they were little. This for me was key in the storytelling. Because it seemed like the Anime was trying to show an unrealistic storyline (that many Anime do) with how Kousei found his love for Kaori, being portrayed as an "angel" and a love at first sight type of thing. Whereas in fact, it was nothing like that. She was always in school, but she had never been noticed by anyone, especially by Kousei. And she is the one that makes herself be noticed. Which I felt was immensely important to the whole storyline. And the amazing thing is, the Anime hints at this with lines like Kousei saying "You're wearing school clothes. Have you always been a part of our school?" (or something to that effect). So, the reveal at the end felt completely earned and also made it really relatable. How many teenagers have insecurities with themselves and the way each one deals with them. Kaori was able to overcome her insecurities, because she knew she had very little time left and sought to do everything she wanted. This gave her a lot of confidence and in turn made her more noticeable to everyone else. The narrative is beautifully written and makes so much sense. Kousei then undergoes a huge development with his character because of this. He is a much more mature person in the end, by looking more forward and up, rather than down, many times pointed out in the show. And if course the way he overcomes his traumas and using the piano to overcome those obstacles, rather than run away from it. Something that obviously happened due to Kaori and the way he felt about her (always playing for her). And Tsubaki finally realizes her feelings towards Kousei and only does so when she feels she is losing him. The way she communicates it is also very interesting, because she feels she has already lost Kousei to Kaori and says it in a very "inexperienced" way by being very harsh on him. Which is a much more interesting scene to watch rather than if she had been nice and lovely to him. It makes sense due to her age. It's the first time she has dealt with that and it was the best way for her to communicate it. I loved that scene.

Everything was so relatable and the fact that the animation was so good made every serious scene feel so much more (it's made by the same studio that did Shelter, which makes it even better).

All in all, a fantastic watch. As always with Anime like this, you think about life, yourself and others, you question about everything because you want to understand every minute detail of why you feel things in a certain. Do our insecurities have to do with our parents? How we were brought up? How we used to and how we now communicate our feelings to others? Past loves that were never realized? Or ones that were? The excuses we make, is it all because we're scared to fulfill our deepest dreams and desires? This is what I love about Anime and Japanese culture in general. The way they don't shy away from showing what all of us think from time to time...

...and Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso does this perfectly.
