During a routine journalism assignment, freelance photographer Akihito Takaba is captured by the mysterious Asami, a powerful leader in Japan's underworld society. Asami forces his captive to undergo a night of pleasure and pain never before imagined. Before long, the son of a powerful Chinese mafia boss also sets his sights upon Akihito, demanding the critical evidence he's photographed be turned over. The mafia boss though has other reason for taking Akihito.
Finder Series was initially licensed in English by Central Park Media under its Be Beautiful imprint until the company's bankruptcy in 2009. Only 3 volumes were released. Digital Manga Publishing, under its Juné imprint, acquired the license and released the first volume on September 8, 2010. In 2015, the publisher launched a successful Kickstarter to restock the first six volumes of the series. The license was lost in June 2016 when the publishing agreement between DMP and Libre Publishing had ended. The following month, VIZ Media picked up the license under the SuBLime imprint and published the 8th volume on March 14, 2017.
Yaoi - most of them, as fact states, have shitty plot. There's hardly any plot at all. Just smex and sissy boys, and more smex. The Finder Series, or You are My Love Prize in Viewfinder as it is commonly called, is the exact opposite of what many think (or maybe 'know') what yaoi is.
The first chapter of the manga would immediately capture the interest of a (tolerant) reader. Character intro is done well, and one can feel what it's like to be chased by armed mafioso. Mafia... sounds good, no? The story revolves around an amateur photographer who got caught up in the chaotic
underworld society while seeking to expose an influential businessman. There you have the uke and the seme. Sex comes in when this businessman, Ryuichi Asami, uses 'pain and pleasure' to get this photographer, Akihito Takaba, to just surrender. The latter isn't gay (yet) and haven't even thought about getting raped by a man, more so be harassed by a masochist. Yes, it's got SM in it. XD Good thing is, after all he'd have to go through, the uke isn't all so girly and all so submissive, unlike many other ukes. Foul language, athletic moves, you name it. Other characters come in, specifically one who was involved with the seme Asami in the past. The feud between him and another underworld big-shot, Liu Fei Long, who also takes interest in the uke for the sole reason of revenge, is what spices up the story.
Along with the outstanding plot, sex scenes are delivered really well. How much of a perv you are doesn't matter (ha!) for the actions are easy to comprehend. The art isn't too sketchy like those shoujo mangas. The drawings are detailed and the characters' body structures look realistic. 'Hot' looks hot, 'cool' looks cool, and 'spunky' looks spunky. It's got a seinen manga style to it. Sure, sex is all for lust, but unlike your typical romance stories where it comes last, it's what triggers the development of a relationship (yep, raep). The thought of gay underworld lords is kinda laughable, but it's what makes this manga unique. The chaotic society they live in sparks how bad ass they could all be. Hell yeah, blood covered bishies! And of course the plot isn't ruined by a ridiculous amount of sex. It comes in when things go low tide, and goes out when other elements like action set in. There hardly is a dull moment.
You are My Love Prize in Viewfinder is definitely a must-read for all the yaoi and BL fans out there. It ain't your typical baseless yaoi. It's a hell lot more than that, guaranteed!
Personally i found this one of the best yaoi manga reads out there, it has everything you will ever love from some steamy yaoi.
The characters are stunning and Yamane Ayano knows just how to portray their wonderful individual personalities. She draws them ever sowonderfully, with such attention to detail with their body structures, everything youd love to see in a yaoi.
This yaoi is full of all the steaminess you could wish for, and as well as a beautiful storyline, with action and wonderful romance. Its fall of so many amazing twists and plots and enough steam through out the great plot to keep eyes alert!
will be sure to instantly fall for the main characters, Akihito Takaba and Asami twisted love story, is it really as forced and unrequited as it seems? youll have to watch and see how the lust unfolds. But i assure you this will be one yaoi manga you wont be disappointed with.
I started this series a few years ago, but never got past the first volume. After reading something about how it was one of the "best BL titles" out there, I decided to pick it up again and give it a read. I've read 6 volumes of the series so far, so I feel comfortable giving my opinion on it.
-Graphic sex scenes
-Good looking characters
-Art (apart from the occasional yaoi hands) (7)
-Story is pretty bland (5)
Is action but is more like Asami saving Takaba 90% of the time from situations he gets himself into. While I really enjoy action yaoi, my big beef
with this series is that the action part has pretty much no backing plot. It's just a bunch of almost random gangster scenes, etc. I feel like if it was more fleshed out, then I'd like it a lot more, but the lack of background makes it just fairly boring for me.
-Character development. (6)
While the series at least gives a bit of a feel for the characters and what their beliefs and goals are, like the story, it's not very fleshed out. 6 volumes in I would have liked to have a bit of a background of how the characters got to where they are today, or at least something more than the readers just knowing Takaba likes photography. Right off the bat it was one of those stories where guy 1 wants guy 2, guy 2 doesn't want him but always ends up banging him while still "hating" him and playing hard to get. I just wish there was more development between the two of them.
-Sex scenes everywhere
This is half an awesome thing and half a "ugh again" thing. Being a yaoi reader I obviously enjoy sex scenes, but there are so many in this series it's almost boring. There is no real build up, just everyone and their mother (father??) trying to rape Takaba because he is cute & has a mystery relationship with Asami.
Overall I think i'm being a bit harsh on this series, since a) it is praised so much and b) i'm a seasoned 23 year old yaoi reader. I think if I was 16-18 and read this I would have thought this series was amazing, but now after reading hundreds of yaoi series, this series is almost forgettable apart from the sex scenes.
The series is worth reading I think in terms of it's yaoi scenes, but stay away from this if you are looking for realistic situations & cute fluff, etc and hate rape. I plan to keep reading this series to see if it develops at all, in which I will alter my review. This series isn't bad, but I also wouldn't say it's that great either.
Finder Series is basically an action story. I mean a sexy action yaoi story. And that’s pretty much it. The charm of it resides in the twists, the danger, and the rush. There is no pink here, only some humorous situations; and when you think you are seeing love it is the hard version of it, or the desire to posses. I would strongly disagree with this kind of sadistic and unfeeling relationship if it wasn’t so nicely portrayed, as the perfectly fitting cat and mouse game for these complicated and strong men.
It is only in the later stages of the story that we
(and the characters) start wondering about the nature of their feelings. Their relationship started like a game of power, then desire and it’s probably evolving to something more after so much near-to-death situations that bring out the things that really matter to surface.
As mentioned above, the plot is action driven, with a rather common abuse at the beginning, and later it develops into a mafia war. Fairly interesting and absorbing, even with a lot of sex scenes it manages to have a story to support most of them and get you interested in it. I think that’s quite an accomplishment, a BL that is not only about the relationship (or sex) but what happens around it too.
Yamano Ayane has a really stylized art, not really uncommon but you can recognize it most of the times; always clean designs, elaborated backgrounds, beautiful characters, detailed clothes/hair, and nice facial expressions. Sometimes you would think that the characters look too “perfect”, with well defined muscles and no hair! I would call it sexy art. The sex scenes can be considered explicit, even when they might seem average most of the times; some feature BDSM, and others have very explicit details like blood. Besides there are some non consensual ones and pretty much all of them go straight to the point. The colored art is great by the way; the mangaka knows how to make really beautiful pieces and has improved significantly over the years, her art books are just great. The funny scenes, on the other hand, change the style a bit, making the characters look cuter.
The characters might seem kind of transparent at the beginning but they get more and more complex as the story progresses. You would think that Akihito is just a simple, cheerful and idealist brat while Asami is a ruthless yakuza boss that has to dominate everything and everyone, but there is even more to it than the eye meets, and that’s only perceived in subtle actions or expressions throughout the story. There are some parts, though, where I truly don’t understand Akihito’s behavior and wish he wasn’t so… Forgiving? Lustful? Makes one doubt about how unique is his relationship with Asami.
On an extra note, this couple is certainly not equally standing from what we can see; Asami would be top of the tops seriously! While Akihito keeps trying really hard to keep his manly pride in front of such a strong man. Besides, we mostly know about Akihito’s personality and just a bit of Asami’s, he doesn’t talk much and he has a lot of secrets; Akihito keeps wondering what’s behind that iron mask and is always trying hard to equal his strength, to surpass him. We will hopefully see more of this in future chapters.
Finder Series is a really exciting story about power, desire and a really complex relationship in a dangerous environment. If you like drama, sexy men with guns and elegant figures with a bit more spice in the explicitness area this should be one of your favorites. We even have a malicious super sexy longhaired Chinese nemesis that almost, just almost, equals Asami in power and presence. A lot of wicked characters and some that are not exactly what they look like.
I don't consider this a masterpiece, rather a must read in this genre, but I even have enjoyed re-reading parts of this story once in a while. It is great to find a manga that has more than two volumes and an interesting plot, besides the extra stories would make other nice mangas on their own; definitely looking forward to the rest of the trip, without a single clue about how these two will manage and how Akihito would grasp his mysterious partner’s heart.
