Mixed Feelings
Ecchi is one of my least favourite anime genres. I started watching this OVA expecting to leave infuriated and disappointed, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw.

This is only two episodes long, and the short length works in its favour. It doesn't have time to linger on fanservice (though it is present), so it focuses more on the important parts of this series: the battles, the romance, and the characters. The battle was quite cool (it had transforming robots!), as were the rest of the sci-fi vehicles and lore, which made me a lot more sympathetic towards this OVA. The characters (with the ...

If Steven Colbert made an anime, something like this would be the result.

This is nothing but a cheap, lazy way to get in on a trend -- a trend that would become horribly dated. Scatological humour is the only kind of humour in this anime, unless you're from the year 2017 and find jokes portraying Trump as a rowdy child funny. Honestly, the Baby Trump balloon was funnier than this, if for no other reason than that it's not so gross. If this wasn't so gross, I would probably have gotten a teeny, tiny nostalgic chuckle out of it, but little else.

This harkens ...

This show has gotten tons of praise, and my friends have mentioned it before, so I decided to check it out. Trigger being in the credits only encouraged me. I ended up incredibly disappointed with what I saw: a melee of violence, nudity, and cursing that had little reason to be in this anime except to fill out the run time, to compensate for the shallowness of this anime, and to convince viewers that they're watching a mature big boy cartoon.

At least Edgerunners lives up to its name. It is the anime equivalent to an edgy teenage boy who tries to compensate for his ...

It's honestly difficult not to recommend this. If you love Evangelion and want more Evangelion, you should read this. Think of this as a bonus scene for Evangelion 3.0. It depicts a nice little interaction between Asuka and Mari before the events of Evangelion 3.0 transpire. It's definitely nothing groundbreaking or shattering (in part because of its very short length), but it adds a greater context to Evangelion 3.0. The art is stunningly detailed too; it looks like the art could have jumped right off the screen. Overall, this is some nice supplementary material for the Rebuilds of Evangelion, and it probably would be a ...

If your favourite part of Evangelion was the religious imagery and lore, then you're in luck, because Anima certainly delivers in that aspect. Due to being in a novel format, Anima has the freedom to have lots of intriguing ideas that an anime wouldn't have the time to flesh out. The lore and mysteries of the original series (such as what exactly SEELE is) are expanded on in a way that feels consistent with Evangelion as a whole. The Christian references are more involved, prominent, and meaningful (though still fairly aesthetic and surface-level), and the global impact of the events is explored -- something the ...

Tate no Kuni (Manga) add
Though Tate no Kuni starts out with the common premise of a boy finding a mysterious girl and following her, it quickly develops into a thoughtful, Star Trek-like sci-fi story that uses lots of theoretical physics concepts and explores the nature of reality. This manga lies in the same realm as highly-praised works like Dennou Coil and Serial Experiments Lain in that it is driven by the characters seeking an understanding of their world -- a world that is meaty, intricate, and thought-provoking for the reader. All of the plot points are intentional and add to the reader's understanding of the manga's world; there is ...

From the vast land of Japanese Transformers G1 stories comes Transformers: Zone. Featuring brand new characters and anime-influenced robot designs and transformation and action sequences (something that would later be prevalent in the early-2000s Unicron Trilogy), this is a short Transformers story that attempts to tell the entire plot of a season-long cartoon in a single 20-minute episode. Due to decreasing interest in Transformers in Japan at the time, this OVA was the only animated material that promoted the concurrently-released Zone toyline, and it would be the final Japanese G1 cartoon released before the Beast Wars animes in the late 1990s.

The animation isn't bad; ...

This short is based on a side-story from the manga. Similar side-stories were written for all the Sailor Senshi in the manga, but only Ami's was made into an anime short. As is usual with Sailor Moon, the visuals are stunning, with crisp colours, good conveyance of emotion, and a touch of surrealism. The story itself is not bad; it is a nice character exploration for Ami as she takes centre stage in this short. While the plot is what one would expect from a Sailor Moon filler episode, this has a different feel from the usual filler episodes because while most filler episodes focus ...

For a silly mashup of two disparate properties meant to celebrate anniversaries of Gundam and Hello Kitty, this is actually a pretty good collection of shorts. The animation in the Gundam universe is gorgeous; Hello Kitty translated really well into that art style. There also were some mecha briefly shown in the Hello Kitty art style, which is good because otherwise this would have felt incomplete. The story is pretty deep for a 6-minute collection of shorts, and it has a basic level of character development in Amuro. This is more than can be said for other anime shorts that commemorate special occasions, as they ...

This is a fairly simplistic, short Sonic the Hedgehog manga. It features a typical Sonic plot (Sonic must stop the evil plans of Dr. Eggman, and he succeeds in stopping Eggman) and is not at all a strenuous read. It appears to have been made to promote Sega's Megadora / Mega Drive gaming system, with characters advertising the system at the end of Chapter 1. The artwork is nice, and the comic is filled with plenty of cute animals. The manga focuses mainly on Sonic and Eggman and does not feature many other Sonic characters like Tails or Knuckles. The manga's plot is very ...
