Oh, so you started watching it because of me...? It makes me feel a bit guilty tbh, as it isn't an anime I would reccommend tbh. It certainly isn't bad, but as you said it's pretty average and it's kind of boring, especially at the beginning. There are some elements I really like in it, but then again they can't compensate for the slow narration and... idk, the lack of that "something" (that drive, as you more properly put it xD) you can detect while watching the anime.

Is it their first work, then?

Yes I did! I had wanted to start it for a very long time; and I finally did the other day with my friend, when there weren't any olympics competitions we were interested in^^ I admit that at first I found it to be a tad too exaggerated (just like any other sport anime, or anime in general for that matter is tbh; but it kind of irked me for some reasons); the irritation soon left space to sheer enjoyment though. As you said, the plot is well developed, it hooks you right away and it's inevitable to grow fond of the characters in the blink of an eye!
I'll keep you updated about what I think as soon as I'll go on with it^^
