I only recently got into watching anime, although I had seen some Japanese animation before. But it took a few of the 'right' shows/movies to really draw me in.
For me, those were: - "Is this a Zombie?" Seasons 1 and 2 - "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" - "Mahoromatic" - "Kimi Ni Todoke" - "Cuticle Detective Inaba" - "Sekirei" - "Haganai" - "Oreimo" - "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS" - "The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat" - "Yaharo No Seishun Love Comedy" So, given my age, I guess that makes me an 'otaku'. Although, strangely perhaps, the anime I watch don't feel like a regression to my youth at all or even like a change to a more childish view of the world. If anything, watching anime feels like a much longed-for breath of fresh air after all the western television and movies (both American and European) I used to watch. Or had basically stopped to watch, I should say, since it all got so repetitive and superficial. Quite frankly, just about any anime out there feels a lot more creative, fresh and grown-up to me than much of the so-called prime time TV aimed at adults in Europe and the US. Why do so many people keep watching those interminable cop-shows, serial killer investigation shows, hospital shows and the at best so-so sitcoms? I would much rather watch a moving romantic anime (Kimi Ni Todoke), an over-the-top supernatural action show like "Is this a Zombie?" or a brilliant commentary on growing up, high school relations and romance like "Haganai". Too bad that they're probably not aimed at my age group, but it's either that or make do with the few American sitcoms I can stomach ("Rules of Engagement", "The Big Bang Theory" and "Scrubs"). And speaking of childish, most western comedies aimed at adults are a lot more childish than Japanese anime comedies aimed at teens. To my eyes, at least... |
