Shigeru Mizuki is unique in that he actually fought in WWII for the Imperial Japanese Army. He ended up losing an arm in Indonesia and a key reason he drew manga after the war is because that was work he could do while disabled. His depiction of the war and military elements is outstanding, but it is the perspective of a guy who was lazy and low quality soldier looking to do the minimum to get by. It's a perspective that anyone who has served would understand, but its something you rarely see in literature.

The Showa series is history of Japan during that reign combined with an autobiography of the author whose life covered that time as well. It's one of the most consumable works you can fine to understand just how drastic and radical the change that occurred in Japan over those years.
