It's a shame it's not only underrated, but underwatched as well. A lot of the raw emotions portrayed by the cast felt very genuine, the struggles we're very basic but real and like you said the drama/romance wasn't out of place or shoehorned in. I was enjoying the fifth grade story of Taeko almost more than the present Taeko. (I got a good chuckle at this line "I don't wanna catch a period" tfw didn't even know what that was at the same age. All I knew about were cooties) I am a sucker for soul searching type stories, being in a similar situation myself, I can totally get on board and it delivered in a very heartfelt way; those sort of lingering questions of "am I doing the right thing?" and self reflection I think many can relate to. It managed to seize so many emotions over its runtime without being preachy and the expressions speak more words than any amount of dialogue.

The dimples I noticed right away (Taeko's room in the beginning and smiling at the mirror) that was a cute touch that put a grin on my own face. Very seamless transitions as well, I really adored the train ride with the shadows passing through the windows and seeing the kid version pop out of the train cart. Also omg that video <3 I didn't even catch that it was the Anne director but it makes so much sense. Anne goes into many similar dream sequences, also flying nontheless.

I shall watch Kaguya for my next ghibli cuz Chichi said so <3
