Oobari Masami was born 24 January 1966 in Hiroshima, Japan. After graduating from Hiroshima Prefectural Miyajima Technical High School he joined Ashi Productions Co., Ltd (now known as Production Reed).

After debuting as key animator on Transformers and Tokusou Kihei Dorvack at the age of 18, he refined his drawing style and consequently debuted as character and mecha designer on Dancougar at the age of 19.

He quit Ashi Productions shortly thereafter and continued working as animator, character and mechanical designer on a variety of works.

His directorial debut was on the 5th and 6th Bubblegum Crisis OVAs at the age of 21.

Currently Representative of Studio G-1 Neo.

He was previously married to Ishida Atsuko and co-founded Studio G-1 Neo together with her.
