Publishing company Kadokawa announced an anime adaptation of Ryuuto's Mezametara Saikyou Soubi to Uchuusenmochi Datta node, Ikkodate Mezashite Youhei toshite Jiyuu ni Ikitai (Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship!) light novel on Thursday.

Ryuuto began penning the isekai sci-fi novel on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in February 2019. Kadokawa began printing the series under its Kadokawa Books label in July that year, featuring illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima (Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou). The 13th volume shipped last September, with the 14th volume going on sale on February 10. The light novel has a cumulative 1.3 million copies of its volumes in circulation.

Shunichi Matsui began serializing a manga adaptation on the ComicWalker website (now KadoComi) in November 2019. Kadokawa published the ninth volume on January 23.

Seven Seas Entertainment licensed both the light novel and manga in English in December 2020 and February 2021, respectively. The 11th novel volume was released digitally on January 2 and physically on February 4. The seventh manga volume went on sale last June, with the eighth volume planned for a March 25 release.

Synopsis
Sato Takahiro was an ordinary office worker and hobbyist gamer until the day he woke up on a spaceship–one that strangely resembled a craft from a favorite space-shooter game. With a decked-out ship, a crew full of babes, and a fantastic universe to explore, he's going to make the most of his good luck and create the life he's always dreamed of! A bit of a shame that this seems like the story is the same sort of bland power fantasy as most other isekai, because a space opera isekai sounds like a really cool idea.

Exciting news. This one has been on my reading list for a while, so I'll probably get around to it soon now. I really enjoyed his other series "Survival In Another World With My Mistress", and I hope it gets animated too.

As much as I want this one too, it's highly unlikely this will happen, because for the 90% of the time they just sit/walk and talk there. And also they will start cutting corners here and there thus fucking up important plot-points. So, yeah, I'd rather they better not do it.

The fantasy isekai era is over, the age of the space slopera is upon us

Oh hey, the manga for this one is not terrible.

I went deep into the isekai rabbit hole about a year and a half ago and was reading pretty much every single one that got translated, but I purged nearly all of them from my reading list when I realized I wasn't actually looking forward to reading new chapters as they came out. This is one of the few that survived that purge, so I'm hoping the anime is decent.

Isekai space dandy, nice

At the very least, I would rather more "isekai" do sci fi. The writers in the medium, generally, can write those better. Will give a look, partially because I am so desperate for a return to that genre.

@kta_99 I did not blame you for criticism, I gave examples why I consider such complaints dubious. But if you want to limit yourself, then okay, you decide.

Feb 6, 10:09 AM by RobertBobert

@RobertBobert You keep responding to arguments that I'm not actually making. It's not a criticism of the series. I'm not saying that harems don't fit the setting or don't make sense in the story. I'm saying I don't like them. That's all I've ever been saying.

Feb 6, 10:05 AM by kta_99

@kta_99 Yes, but I’m used to the fact that when people complain about harems, they tend to exaggerate exceeding numbers many times. In fantasy? Who should worry about harems in the fantasy if these are fictional worlds that work according to original laws? With the same logic, you can complain about the knights in the fantasy, because holding swords and bows is prohibited by law, LMAO.

Feb 6, 9:58 AM by RobertBobert

@RobertBobert The fact that there aren't many of them out there doesn't change the fact that I don't like them. And it's not as rare as you describe in the context of isekai and isekai-esque fantasy anyway.

Feb 6, 9:54 AM by kta_99

@kta_99 There are even fewer such shows than a show with a unironic show with open incest. One way or another, this is science fiction, I do not see problems with this in this setting.

You forgot Mao, optionally the adventures of Maomao (show with both literal and metaphorical harem, lmao), Kakushigoto (An unambiguous parody of a harem like the author’s past work, in which MC has a literal harem) an so on.

Feb 6, 9:49 AM by RobertBobert

@RobertBobert Apparently I need to state this as unambiguously as possible: I have no issue with the harem genre in general. It's not my favorite, but I think it can be entertaining. I have an issue with polyamory/polygamy, which this series falls into.

Also, three? Apart from Amagami Sister and maybe Medaka Kuroiwa (which doesn't qualify IMO, but I'd get where you're coming from) what am I watching that you'd call harem?

Feb 6, 9:43 AM by kta_99

@kta_99 You are watching at least three harem anime right now, and one of them even literally openly screams "this harem." If by "real harem" you mean a literal harem, then such a show are absolutely rare, even among harems.

Feb 6, 9:38 AM by RobertBobert

@RobertBobert Huh? I've only ever watched two harem anime and read one harem manga. And of those:
One I didn't know was going to have a harem ending and gave a low score to.
One I only gave a 7 to and almost certainly isn't going to have a harem ending.
One is just legit really good and almost certainly isn't going to have a harem ending.

There's a reason I specified my issue was this being true harem. I have no issue with the genre in general.

@NewestPersonHere

Oh wow! Looks like author by accident posted plot summary in place where title should go when submitting his novel. :D Thank you for sharing it.

Feb 6, 9:30 AM by S4N

@EcchiGodMamster "European fantasy" is the basis of fantasy. With the same logic, you can complain about SF in space shows. Really, man, if you must complain about something, find another topic.

@kta_99 It's funny to hear this from the person that in the past gave high scores for harems or continues to watch/read the harem titles right now

Feb 6, 9:25 AM by RobertBobert

This was super interesting to me. For a couple of minutes. Then I found out that it's true harem, which is an absolute dealbreaker for me. Really sucks because the rest of it seems cool, and I wish there were more space opera type settings in anime. But such is life.

Feb 6, 8:50 AM by kta_99

Yes, I was hoping this title will get an anime adaptation. I read a few chapters of the manga version with a premise that is different from most isekai. This is the second time a series that I'm reading/plan to read got an anime adaptation. First the Red Ranger isekai and now this. It seems like Japan is starting to realize that they are just scratching the surface with generic fantasy tropes with video game mechanics(pet peeve for isekai) and are trying new themes.

Somebody wouldn’t kick him out of the spaceship right, like they do with these guys in the hero parties?
