Happy!

So, I was reading this super long manga called Happy! by the writer of Monster and 20th Century Boys, and well, it was the most cliched story you'll see in your life.

A naive but determined young beauty is left an orphan after her parents died, and her big brother ran off and left her with a huge debt on her head.

She tries to pay it off playing tennis, and that's where her worries start.

Fun fact: I started reading this story because it was recommended if you liked watamote, with an eternally unhappy MC. And Umino Miyuki is eternally unlucky, just like Tomoko, but unlike Tomoko, Miyuki's misfortune is caused entirely by external factors. Where Tomoko is sad because she has a shitty personality and blames everything on everyone else, Miyuki is sad because everyone else around her has a shitty personality, even though Miyuki is such a perfect angel.

In the story, the yakuza try to get her to work as a prostitute, but she decides to play tennis, but she needs the support of an evil matriarch, the mother of the wimpy love interest #1, she earns her support after beating Kaku Kikuko, her career (and the one of the coaches who had the misfortune to coach her) is on the line if she doesn't win, and around here the evil diva sets her eye on her and decides that her sole purpose in life is to make Miyuki's life miserable (and she succeeds, at lieast up to chapter 80), shitty rumors are spread about Miyuki and she's bullied, but she perseveres, she thrives on the tournament, but loses due to cheating, she signs a shitty contract that will take any money she earns away from her, the evil matriarch decides to take her back and gives her a shitty coach, he's a compulsive gambler and, while he's a good coach, he uses her for gambling, putting money as a priority, she loses her home, she's forced to live as cinderella in some evil woman's house with some evil twin daughters----

And that's where I stopped reading because, holy shit, that was too much.

I mean, the story was such a cliche storm, with the underdog down on her luck rising up and up and defeating consecutively stronger oponents, and only losing because the rival cheated. But Miyuki was never obnoxious as a protagonist in the sense that she was such a pollyanna. She was determined to win, but that's because she literally couldn't afford to lose. No shit of "but it's my dream" or anything like that. And the rival was such an unrepentant bitch that it's simply impossible to root for her. Not to mention that she's not a tryhard rival. She's some bitch who only cares about shopping and some guy, and her number one hobby is torturing Miyuki from the shadows, so you really want her to get what's coming to her.

So yeah, even though Miyuki is so perfect and talented and whatever, it never got to be obnoxious, which is really amazing.

Most of the secondary cast are 2D stereotypes whose purpose is to be the archetype they need to be to get in Miyuki's way.

The only exceptions are:

The Yakuza man and love interest #2. His backstory is that he wanted to be a pro soccer player, but messed up real bad and ended up being forced to be a Yakuza. His story of slowly warming up to Miyuki and ending up wanting to see her realize the dream he couldn't was the main reason I put up with the story for the first part. Definitely the best character.

Then we have the wimpy rich boy, and love interest #1. He is really interesting in the sense that he seems superficially as the kind of guy who would come in and swipe Miyuki off her feet, but Miyuki misunderstands when she sees him with the rival girl or something, but the guy's charisma and righteousness will persevere in the end. The interesting thing is that he is actually a real wimp, and he relents to his mother's threats more often than not. Him growing out of his "it can't be helped" fearful attitude seems to be the point of his story. A very interesting aversion to his type of character. Except that his love for Miyuki seems to run so deep only, with him getting too distracted with other women's huge PLOTS, and forgetting Miyuki's justice every time.

And lastly we have Kaku Kikuko, the best friend. There's some drama involving her, but it's solved quickly, and most of her story is wanting to help Miyuki and supporting her, but not being able to due to various circumstances.


Now, the plot was very entertaining up until the tournament arc. I mean, it was very contrived until then, but it was good, and that would have been a great stopping point for the series, too. But nooo. The story had to go on, and they had to introduce more shit to fling at Miyuki's life. The last plot thread about being some kind of cinderella was so hair pullingly annoying that I had to stop reading.

It was still pretty compelling while it lasted, and I guess I learned that the main character can be a talented underdog and I may still be able to root for them. I think what did it for me is that the plot was never about tennis. Tennis is a plot device, but the story is really about Miyuki and her poverty. So the tournaments are never about A's skills and B's secret ability and C's drive and determination clashing and stuff. You just really want Miyuki to win against all these faceless adversaries because you don't care about the tennis, you care about Miyuki's poverty.

I think it's important to keep that in mind.

On Atashi no Bambi:

Chapters 1-3

Nanase Haruko is the nerd of nerds. She studies from dawnbreak till nightbreak and she'll have fun at it.

But, since she's such a serious person, she has trouble undarstanding and being understood by other people. She's blunt, so she hurts people's feelings, and even when she doesn't have bad intentions, she ends up hurting people.

She meets Hachiya, a delinquent who skips school. In an inversion of the typical shoujo hero, he's not super smart and awesome and good at everything. He's shown to be an awesome fighter in the introduction, but aside from that, he's pretty dumb and lives a pretty pathetic lifestyle. In a way, he reminds me of Sakura Kyouko. I really liked that about him. He puts no effort at all into school, skips to play in the arcade with little boys, and doesn't care as long as he gets to pass to the next grade.

He's really good at sports, though, and he encourages her once to make the time to actually pass the class (the only class she sucks at.)

Thanks to that, she feels like she owes him one, so she decides to help him out make his grades better.

Of course, she's still as blunt and insufferable as ever, the way she goes about it. She criticizes his ways and looks down on not putting in the effort necessary. She talks about her own experiences when she decided to put in the effort, and comes off as if she's bragging, despite trying to inspire him.

Still, he realizes she doesn't have bad intentions, so he sticks around. That doesn't mean he gets any better at it, though.

Along the way another nerd called Misawa enters the fray. She's presented as the typical two-faced bitch character who's jealous of MC's awesome smarts, and pretends to be her friend because she wants to take the first ranking away from her. Thankfully, she ends up actually being sympathetic, after it's shown that the reason she tries so hard to be smart is because a guy rejected her in middle school for being dumb and ugly.

She decided (thanks to Haruko) that it wasn't worth it to change yourself and put that much effort just for a guy, and just decides to be open with her personality (which is really studious and a bit haughty) and hangs out with MC and Hachiya ever since. So MC has two actual friends now, but there's no big deal made about it.

So, eventually Hachiya joins the basketball club and, because he's one of the few sportsy people in that nerd school, he became really popular.

So a lot of girls start chasing after him and ask Haruko to give him letters for them. Haruko, of course, is all stuffy and bureocratic about it, completely missing the point (she complains about the love letters not having names, saying it would be a problem for the recipient, haha).

After Haruko sees the guy play, she starts feeling the dokis. When he's hiding in the infirmary, he forces her to skip class with him, so she does. A teacher comes, and she hides under the covers with him. When he embraces her (to hide) she starts feeling the dokis again and, when she leaves, decides to avoid him because she doesn't understand that feeling.

She's all tsundere and thrash talks about him to hide her feelings, but he hears, and he's hurt.

They make up quickly, though, but he tells her that he wants to be best friends.

So she still avoids him, and he's confused and thinking hard in his gangster way about what the hell is going on with that nerd.

Haruko and Misawa talk a bit, and Haruko confesses her insecurities to Misawa. Misawa doesn't hold back in telling her how much a coward she is, and asking her where her "put effort in" philosophy went.

Haruko decides to confess, and invites Hachiya - to study, that is. Hachiya goes along with it, until he asks her what's wrong. She confesses that she likes him. Since he's a dumbass, he doesn't get it, so she has to elaborate a bit. He still misunderstands, thinking it might be motherly, so, she ends up having to explain, "Since we're both idiots, we suit each other."

I really like that despite using the typical "Hurr, I'm avoiding you because I like you," Haruko never really stopped being the nerd she is. Yes, she changed in the sense that she got too used to having friends to just stop hanging out with Hachiya, but she never really devolved into some shoujo heroine, something that MCs that start different tend to do.

Misawa is the best character, but all of them are very, and I mean very very likeable. Haruko is blunt and studious, and as of yet she hasn't changed or anything just because of her love interest or Misawa. That was pleasantly surprising. She's also very socially dumb, so that's a very cute twist - but still it's not like it's an appeal point. What I mean is, she IS socially dumb, but it's not in a shy way. She still has her bad temper and is a bit of a tsundere (but the manga doesn't waste a lot of effort into thins single trait, which is very welcome. It's more like she's studious and doesn't want to waste time, and also keep up with her philosophy). She rubs me off the wrong way but only in the way she's meant to (the way she talks down to others unawarely, haha). Didn't expect this from a shoujo romance. And Hachiya is a great hero. He's not so perfect it hurts. He has a bad temper, is really dumb and annoying, and doesn't care about the heroine's efforts at first.

The best point of the manga were the characters, and the funny scenes they brought forth. Full of boke comedy. Boke medal. The hero and heronine did have the chemistry, but the romance was pretty underwhelming to me. Probably because of how fast and strangely she just fell for him. Still, it wasn't grating enough so as to e unnacceptable. Still not as good as it could have been.

As a cast, though, all the mains did have great chemistry, and bounced off of each other really well. So it'll get the great cast chemistry medal.

On Getenrou:

It was supposed to be an intriguing mystery about a bunck of kids who go out looking for porn magazines, and get involved in some murder case.

That's what I thought it would be, and the first 3 chapters were great.

But then, there's a time skip, and the 3 friends meet each other again.

The first friends lost his job after some drama in an episode of some show where he was the main villain. His story ate up around 2 chapters and it was completely unrelated to the main plot.

Then the second friend reveals that he became one of the top robotics researchers, and here is where the story goes full GRIMDERP.

He goes full rapist mode and says he's been lusting after MC's sister since they were young. But that's not the worst part. Turns out he started digging around and found out that MC's dad is actually an artificial human researcher, and his first research subject was his sister.

In a random, completely unexplainable and suspension of disbelief breaking bout of rage, he decides to rape her because, hey, angry scientists rape children, that's what they do!

So she gets pregnant, and, GASP, the son was MC! So she's really his mom.

Uh, ok.

So MC decides to kill his horny friend and also kill his real father because he has been keeping all of this mess a secret.

He kills him, and then encounters a police officer.

She's killed by the mom/sister, and they run away, but they both die for some unexplained reason.

The grimderp is real.

It was fine. It felt like it was not as interested in its plot as it was in its bestiary/lorebook elements, which is fine, but seeing it through that lens it's not as in depth or interesting as something like Hakumei to Mikochi. The coupling was really meh (one of the girls barely speaks, not because it's a character trait-she just barely got any lines in the story), and the plot was, again, only interesting as it showed the worldbuilding.

In the end it's a serviceable plot which would have been carried by the worldbuilding if the setting was just a bit cooler.

The Bungaku Shoujo (Nise) is an irredeemable dumbass but I can't help but like her because I also understand her poser energy. Like, "I wanna be a literature girl so baaaad!!!" kind of feeling.

Also, she's hot, so even if Kuzu is scum you get him, lol.

Man I can't help it, every time I read Tanigawa Nico I can't help but feel this DEEP fascination. Their characters are incredible. I also love the book reading angle. This really hypes me up about media.

All of Tanigawa Nico's works are basically about extremely self conscious people putting on airs.

Megane is just autistic as fuck ala Tomoko but without being as judgmental, so he doesn't have many friends because he literally doesn't care unless he can relate them to his hobby in some way. He was the most relatable though. That scene where he's hyped up for the moment Kuzu reaches the twist was great.

Kuzu doesn't put on airs in front of anyone except his crush, who he's obsessed with at the expense of any other relationship he may have. He seems to be better at socializing than Megane, and I wouldn't put him on the autism bucket. His main alienating problem is his absolute assholery.

Bungaku Shoujo is so obsessed with appearances that, despite being neither an autist or an asshole, she hasn't been able to talk to anyone or make friends. It's almost sad if you think about it beyond the gag manga setup. But she's such a dummy that she doesn't really realize it.

The gyaru president is kind of all at the same time, but also none at all. Somehow she ends up being the all-rounder. Blunt without actively being an asshole like Kuzu, autistic enough to obsess over books at the expense of her social life and being unable to understand some social cues very well, but cares and tries when she does, and doesn't seem to put on airs, but also doesn't seem to be completely unfazed like Megane.

Speaking of this, Tomoko encapsulates all of this. She's autistic and an asshole, and is also obsessed with appearances. Oof.
