Story - I only just read Ibitsu the other day and I have to admit that I much prefered Ibitsu to this manga. The plotlines are pretty much identical. Two very creepy women stalking the main lead by breaking into their houses, etc. I felt that Ibitsu however had a lot more meat to the story and in comparison I felt that 'Zashiki Onna' just did not match up to the creepiness and twists that was experienced through Ibitsu. However, if you want a creepy manga without the goriness that is drawn in Ibitsu then this is the better choice to make. I felt the ... gore made the Ibitsu what it was. I felt this was more a mere shell of a story.

Art - I wasn't overally bothered by the art but I felt that the creepy tall woman was drawn to look almost unhuman which was pretty well done.

Character - One thing I have to say about this is that I felt there was almost no character development at all. You don't really feel anything for the characters and as a result, the story probably has less of an impact for this reason. Not to sound like a broken record but the characters in Ibitsu were much more development which helped aid in the creepiness. I did not feel this as much from this manga.

Enjoyment - As the manga is short, it didn't take long to read. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read Ibitsu first as I may have appreciated the story a little more. I felt the idea in this story is very reminiscent of Stephen King's 'Misery' (which is also worth reading if you like this!).

Overall - I think its pretty clear in this review that I much more preferred Ibitsu to this. If you are one who is partial to a bit of gore and epic creepiness, I highly recommend Ibitsu which literally had me hiding in the company of other with the lights on and in comparison I could watch this in the dark, alone.

Story: The story was pretty addicting, and set to the right pace of the length of the manga. Aside from the predictable fact of knowing that the woman will always be in the most unfortunate places at the most unfortunate times for the main character. However, about halfway through the manga, because of the sudden involvement of other characters and the initiative to rid the main character and co. from the stalker, you don't know how the story will end. Rather than being a teenage scare, this 1993 thriller manga has a somewhat vague and unhappy ending, which makes the story better.



Art: The art ... was horrid, to say the least. I understand that the style was supposed to be more realistic, and I think it was. But it wasn't very appealing. The art only really worked for the stalker character and the ugly smile she pulled off towards the end. The story easily makes up for the eyesores, though.



Characters: The characters had typical personalities. Though they weren't all that developed. I feel like the main character had reasons for the why he did some of the things he did, but we never see those reasons. So you're left to chalk it up that he's just an idiot. The mystery behind the stalker woman and lack of background is a good choice. Even though the characters weren't really all that outstanding, it just worked for Zashiki Onna.



I think that this is a good, quick read if you're in the mood to get creeped out. But if you're someone who looks at art as a vital part of the manga and you can't stand reading something unless it has good character development, then you might want to look elsewhere. Definitely something to try out, though.

Zashiki Onna is not much of an interesting horror manga without its downright creepy artwork. That is to say, that's pretty much all it needs.

The art is creepy and well-drawn. The look of the woman can cause nightmares for anyone who dares to read this manga in the dark, alone, without any help in sight.

The story is as straightforward as it gets, understandable since it's only 11 chapters after all.

The characters are smart and honestly kind of likable. They are easy to sympathise with, especially in the case of the main character who seems to be the catalyst of the horror.

My main gripe stems ... from ending. It's so... abrupt and underwhelming. Maybe I expected too much from it, but the characters involved with the main protagonist didn't at all care about his situation in the end. They seemed... out of character, despite being significantly involved with the monster in one way or another.

I wasn't particularly scared as much as other people claim they were. Maybe it's because I was in a crowded setting and read this on a whim. Probably. That said, if you're looking for a quick, fun read with doses of nightmare fuel, then this is right down your alley.

Great especially around Halloween to get in the creepy spirit. The manga is basically a campfire ghost story extended to an 11 chapter manga. It delivers what it promises, a quick and sweet scary story that you can finish in a day. Don't expect any deep resolutions at the end or explanations for motives because that is not the point of scary campfire stories anyway -it's meant to be a little mysterious - and I think you will enjoy it.

Think of it as an episode of Goosebumps or Are you Afraid of the Dark or Tales from the Crypt. I liked it a lot ... and will be sure to remember it as another scary story to tell during the Halloween season.

Well, there isn't much to say about this manga in all honesty.

It's about a dude who encounters some unhinged phantom of a woman while he's getting ready for bed, doing college dude stuff and killing time.

A lot of horror manga with phantom lady plots start the same way from what I have read, dude has neighbor who has weird stalker creature/woman/thing WHATEVER unbeknownst to him and somehow manages to gain it's love and or attention after the briefest of brief encounters with it.

It's nothing new, at all, and I would honestly say the fact that it takes on such a common and generic cookie cutter ... premise and manages to make it somehow more boring than it already is pretty impressive.

I love horror manga, even the bad ones, I just do. I find them borderline addicting and I just can't get enough, but this one is just boring without any of the charm or quirks of your standard horror manga. It's not even B-Movie tier, it's just bad movie tier ya know?

The art though, is dated and I do find it nostalgic in a sense but it does not fit this type of stories tone or theme whatsoever, I'm sure it could but in this instance it was just left as is and untouched. There was no real effort to make it work or seem more appealing, which I think may also be the point seeing as it's an urban legend based manga.

Maybe the author wanted it to seem grounded which would make some sense given the fact that the rest of the story is realistic outside of a few gripes here and there that are honestly easily to forgive and glance over.

I do hate the apparition/woman whatever it is though, and just how it's portrayed in general. I don't know what it is about some of the horror manga I've read and their weird fixation on women being ugly.

Because that's literally the only about this woman that is "off putting" or "ghastly". She's just tall and happens to be unattractive, not even grotesquely so either, she's just like a 3/10 or something. It makes the whole manga sort of a pain to read, because you just have this giga chad 7 foot tall lady being a weirdo and tanking shots like she's got diamond armor on under her coat and just chugged an invincibility potion or something.

It's really silly, not at all something you would take serious, and it takes you out of the story.

You see her getting curb stomped american history X style by the MCs friend then all of a sudden she's chasing him down the street like Usain Bolt while he pees his pants, it's silly and not really anything spooky.

I don't hate the manga or anything at all, and it's a crazy short read, but I don't recommend it. It's just bland, and fails to be anything. Like anything at all, It's just a story you read really.
