Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is not a very popular manga, and it is a shame at that. For those of you who enjoyed the movie (the film only barley skims the surface of the first and second volume), I highly suggest taking the time to finding the series and reading it, 7 volumes in all.

Nausicaä was written and illustrated by who may be one of the best filmakers of all time, Hayao Miyazaki. That alone should be an incentive enough, but the series itself is monumental.

Taking place thousands of years in the future after all industrial life has come ...

I would like to clarify something before moving on with this review. It is important for my readers to realize that a 9/10 for a manga is not the same as a 9/10 for an anime. Manga’s in my opinion are the superior form of storytelling...I think this opinion of mine needs clarification. Anime as a form of media is saturated with many restrictions. What is allowed to be showed (censorship), how long the animation must be, how many viewers, etc… While manga itself does have some restrictions, they are much more minuscule when compared to anime. This is perhaps the main reason why the ...

This series undoubtedly deserves the place among top ten manga titles, which it currently has on MAL.
Though the film is failry good, it does not cover even half of what is depicted in manga. There are a lot of post-apocaliptic series about humankind trying to make ends meet in severe conditions of wreched world. But they are not as deep and moving as this one. Of course, you should keep in mind that bringing up a topic of world's balance, of our race's place in it, is Miyazaki's forte, be it manga or animation.
This series not an easy read, it has a lot of ideological ...

There might be no bigger challenge in a review than properly conveying impressions on works I cherish as masterpieces, all while clearly stating elements that might persuade or dissuade other people.

Nonetheless, I finally proceed with Nausicaä. Two points before we get started:

1.) First, it’s neither easily digestible nor your typical manga, for it is highly complex and brimming with ideas, as well as too packed with dialogues.

2.) Second, it’s Hayao Miyazaki on his most unfettered. Not a single sample of his lifework conveys everything he stands for more vividly.

Nausicaa and the valley of the wind is Hayao Miyazaki's magnum opus. Not only is it the greatest work that he has ever created- written or animated, but it's also the greatest manga ever made. It's masterclass in every way, and I believe more people should read it. From beginning to end, it is perfectly paced with a dynamic cast of support characters, and our lovely heroine. Nausicaa is a girl of high moral character, who acts selflessly and with the utmost determination. Her qualities as an individual make her quite literally the perfect human. Bad ass, full of compassion, acutely intelligent. She's so good ...

While many anime viewers and especially Studio Ghibli enthusiasts have seen Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind movie, much fewer have read the original manga that served as the template for the movie. While the anime movie continues to holds up well even after 35 years since its release in 1984, the manga version of Nausicaä – serialized from 1982 to 1994 – is a mammoth work of both art and storytelling in the manga genre that is even more relevant even after all these years since its release.

However, before I start the main review – permit me to take two detours.

Detour 1: ...

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind is one of those manga/films duos where, like Akira, I recommend watching the film first and then reading the manga. Get a glimpse of all the cool stuff in the world of the story, and then read the true tale that wants to be told.

Our little princess who loves bugs still exists, she still deals with the Torumekians, there’s still a forest of corruption and a god warrior… but a lot changes. In the books, the war between the Dorok and Torumekian empire for more land takes center stage. Nausicaä sides with the Torumekian princess not because they ...

This review is written assuming that you have seen the movie. If you haven't seen the movie i haven't included any devastating spoilers so read in peace.
The manga version of Nausica was written because couldn't get the funding he needed for am movie that was not based on manga. So in Miyazaki order to make his film he wrote the manga version and after he was able to produce his movie he continued to write the manga for almost a decade after the movie. As such the ...

VOLUME 1 REVIEW

SPOILERS AHEAD!

PLOT

Hundreds of years in the future, mankind is threatened by the spawn of its mistakes. Huge insects roam the decaying, vast cluster of fungi, called the Sea of Corruption. Many believe it was created as a punishment by God for the destruction mankind had caused to the earth in the ancient past. The Sea of Corruption spreads with each passing year, and some believe it will eventually engulf the entire continent.

However, a small kingdom, consisting of little over 500, is protected from the harmful spores of the Sea by the ...

It appears no one has criticized this manga on here yet I believe it is my civic duty to do something in the realm of critique although we shall see if this doesn't end up being a positive review in the end. Now I won't sing Nausicaa's praise despite my affection for this manga and as you can tell by my score that I would have a lot to say in that aspect. However, I would like to write this review to clarify an egregious, arguably an unforgivable flaw of Nausicaa that has troubled me for some time now. Nausicaa herself is an absolutely terrible ...

To begin with I don't think the genres listed in the MAL for this title are correct. I can't see any "adventure" in this manga, and the fantasy is more on the sci-fi side. So I would put "military, action, mystery, thriller, supernatural, sci-fi and philosophical (I think this should be a genre in MAL).
So about the story, it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, with giant insects, miasma and other surprises. But what is destroying the world the most is the war that humans cause.
The main focus of the manga is on the mystery and some philosophical discussions.
I have two ...

Solid post-apocalyptic fantasy manga by a as-yet-undiscovered Miyazaki. The main character Nausicaa is everything a hero should be; strong, humble pure-hearted and incredibly sacrificial. I have no doubt she served as the basis for which all strong female leads would eventually come.
In true Miyazaki fashion we have deep philosophy on war, differing culture and the human spirit and I would argue we've never seen it done better then here. The unfolding story refuses to let you think the bad guys are bad guys for too long as perspectives and motives change on a dime, making you realize how interchangeable good and evil are.
This ...

I wasn't aware that Mr Miyazki himself had made a manga, but I guess it's not too surprising. The new Hardcover bookset is absolutely gorgeous and far and away the best way too experience the story (and is really the only reason I bought it). I wish more manga would follow suit, there is something satisfying about having 2 huge solid books versus like 8 small softcover books that will yellow and fall apart much faster.

Nausicaa of The Valley Of the Wind has a slightly sluggish start, but eventually picks up as the war begins and we get to see the plot start to ...
