Synopsis

A spin-off shoujo manga that centers around Levi's and Erwin's past.

The young Erwin Smith is a rising star in the Survey Corps, humanity's only hope of defeating the man-eating monsters known as Titans. Ruthless and dispassionate, Erwin's mind is devoted to strategies and intrigue. But beneath Erwin's feet is another world, the "Underground," where humans are born and die surrounded by the garbage the Capital throws away. Here, the criminal Levi survives on his wits and agility. But when these two ambitious men cross paths, who will prove himself stronger?

Background

Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku is based on the visual novel of the same name. The visual novel was bundled with the first press release of the sixth Blu-ray volume of the anime's first season and was supervised by Shingeki no Kyojin creator Hajime Isayama.

The series was published in English as Attack on Titan: No Regrets by Kodansha Comics USA from June 24, 2014, to October 28, 2014, and again in a full color omnibus. It was also published in Spanish by Norma Editorial from October 30, 2014, to March 20, 2015; and in Russian by Azbuka in a complete omnibus on March 10, 2017.

Quick review that will act as information to what you can expect.

Basically the story of Levi and how he got to the Survey Crops. It follows him in his underground days with his two companions Isabel and Farlan. His life at this point was him more or less owning the underground in terms of his reputation. Erwin comes along and tries to recruit him. From thereon, you can expect to see the early days of Levi and his team in the Survey Crops.

The art and some of the actions sequences in this manga were really good. I honestly think this art style fits better with the world and storytelling of Attack on Titan that what I've seen of the original manga art style. I especially loved the character design and some of the side stories at the end of each volume. The story telling was nothing especially complex or special but by no means bad. To avoid spoilers, all I'll say is there were some things that tied in with the main story that I thought were well done.

A somewhat surprisingly contained story with talented art to support it. I felt that a side story or two possibly had more value than the main story but that doesn't mean the story wasn't gratifying. However, if you are pressed for time or you are indifferent to Levi but want slightly more Shingeki no Kyojin, I could recommend you to wiki the story and instead read the final interaction between Levi and Erwin. That may seem snide but I genuinely believe that it is applicable to many or most Shingeki no Kyojin fans.
