This manga for most people seems to be a love or hate relationship, It contains lots of extreme content, including gore, horror, psychological , and some sex. If you cannot stand any of those genres don't bother reading it, if you enjoy or don't mind them, then you may want to read this manga yet.
Gantz is a story about a 14 year old teenager named Kei Kurono, who among nearly 10 others dies and in the moment of their death found themselves transported to a locked room with a big black ball and forced to participate in a "game", In which they must hunt down

and murder aliens. This story is shrouded with mystery, who is Gantz? why do they need to kill the aliens? Where did humans get this technology? Does god even exist? Gantz progressively gets more and more complex and continues to question reality and human existence.
Here is my personal analysis of Gantz:
Story 10/10: (I can't be that descriptive while avoiding spoilers)I found in the beginning I was interested right off the bat and while this was not a plot driven story, the idea was done well. In the beginning the only goal was survival, in the middle it was adapting, and learning to do more then just survive, to win. And near the end (FAIRLY OBVIOUS SPOILER) the goal is the survival of humanity and the main character going through hell and back to rescue the women he loves.
Characters 9/10: The main character Kei Kurono starts off as a pitiful loser, not the "ahh I feel bad for him." kind of thing, but more like "This guys fucking gross, what a dumbass pervert, you won't amount to anything." But while in the beginning you hate him (as you are meant to), he has the mind of a realistic normal highschooler, not super hero, nor secret potential, he's a regular guy. But he quickly develops (realistically though imo) into a survivor mentality, he goes from being pervy, desperate and weak to getting the need to be stronger, and the will to survive, he enjoys power but doesn't go crazy with it. Eventually he becomes a character who you respect, he becomes a cool guy. he doesn't suddenly develop extreme morals, or the need to save life, he just cares about others while he cares about himself. The other characters are not that major, and honestly most of the die and stay dead (permanently or for a while). First off Kato Masaru is a stereotypical good guy hero that was childhood friends with Kei and believes in Kei unrealistically who is used to contrast Kei being a loser. Kishimoto Kei is used to make Kei Kuruno seem like more of a loser and make him jealous of his friend Kato, who she likes, although obviously she turns out to be a fanservice (Big boobs) side character. Nishi Jouichirou is an obvious selfish monster who shows the true harsh reality of Gantz. Reika is actually important and is a stalker who loves the main character unconditionally and tries to get him to love her, in any way possible. Other characters not mentioned were either unimportant, died, or did not have a strong relation with the main character.
Art 9/10: The art was very dark and gory, it portrayed the exact atmosphere intended, the only problem I had was the shading was too intense at times, (ex: black suits, night time, black weapons, dark enemies), Sometimes it was a bit overdone, but overall the art was very suitable and good.
Action 10/10: The action was top notch, amazing fights, realistic pain and struggling, no extremely overpowered fighting moves or abilities or weapons, while the weapons may seem extremely strong, the enemies are also extremely strong, evening it out. The fighting allowed for any of the main characters to have a good chance to die, allowing Gantz to be very intense.
Romance 10/10: The "romance" in the beginning was of a sad guy trying to get laid and lose his virginity, Kei Kuruno is extremely desperate and has a pathetic non-existent love life, being so pervy he would do scumbag things (taking advantage to feel up a homeless girl), but then again he was never loved, ever. His parents disliked him, his brother ignored him, he was a loser to them. But eventually he finds love. Not a babe or a goddess, or a genius, or a slave girl, but a realistic homely girl that for once in his life gives him love. That means more then anything to him and from then on his love for her makes romance a major and beautiful part of this manga.
Enjoyment/Overall 10/10: I found this manga, in total, to be beautiful .The extreme realism in a sci-fi manga, the main characters development, the amazing romance, and finally the inspirational messages this story has in the face of humanities weakness.
If you actually finished this, thanks for reading, I just wanted to share my recommendation, because In my opinion this manga, was very amazing and had a lot you could learn from. (Note anime while good, is nowhere near as good as the manga imo)

A post on what I think the appeal of Gantz is, taken from my instagram:
Gantz is a manga that is able to draw from every genre imaginable and somehow still tell a cohesive story. There are elements of sci-fi, horror, romance, drama, gore and mystery. All of these genres flow together seamlessly, this means that there is something enjoyable for everyone in Gantz. The mangaka is a master of analysing elements of other popular works of fiction and implementing them into his own work, all while putting his own spin on these elements which in turn elevates them. Gantz has a very large and diverse ... Aug 3, 2021
Even though there are some things that have not quite convinced me (which I will say later) giving Gantz less than a 10 is impossible for me, what I enjoyed reading this manga I cannot even express correctly, starting with its protagonist Kei Kurono. He seems to be one of the best main characters I have seen, his development and evolution are incredible and the way you empathize with him, perhaps it is the strongest point of the work in my opinion, his relationship with Tae is another very great success, of the more natural relationships in mangas definitely, the bad points (of which none

Having watched the anime, I felt that the Gantz story had so much potential, and of course, I had to read the manga.
And what I found about Gantz was ... A tale about people, violence, sex, war, death, a lot of blood, existence and god. A overwhelming story about the struggle to survive. And the most important, a story to let us know that the best thing we can do are for, and with love. The only thing I can criticize was the jump between some arcs and events and some minor plotholes. Gantz show us aesthetically beautiful drawn scenarios from tokyo and some other places around ... Dec 28, 2013
Gantz is a manga that is almost impossible to knock off from my Top 5 list. Some reviews capitalise on its gore and sex like its some mindless blood and nudity fest. Which is a real shame, because here I am to tell you that Gantz is so much more than that. I’m pretty sure some of these reviewers (not on this website, but if you've seen some of the more general online ones..) don’t even READ the manga and just regurgitate online summaries, judging from their superficial descriptions.
The art is one of the best I have ever seen. There are two kinds of art ... Jan 10, 2023
Gantz starts like a wet dream of a sci-fi nerd and grows into an uncooked narrative, with zero pointers, made up as the story rolls forward. You know, bare bones "cool" stuff: edgy characters, their dumb decisions, weird happenings, aliens, vampires, unabashed gore — inventive at times, I concede — and breasts. Lots of breasts.
Barring all that, it spiraled into some genuinely toe-curling moments. Those were far too far and spread out though. Later on in the manga, Oku started slapping some awesome ideas around, but with unsure hands. His use of CGI-inspired art looks clean, detailed and alien designs are commendable. But you may ... Human lives holds absolutely no significance. People will die, but in this manga, people's death do hold significance. This work goes against human nature, of the selfishness and greed. People who have died, are given a second chance, in return they kill aliens that are a potential threat to earth. Gantz, is like a Jack-Of-All-Trades. So many things are incorporated into this manga that it is almost a work of a genius. Action, romance, Sci-fi, sex, death, gore, ecchi, horror, drama, and psychological. This kind of story is one of a kind that does not appear many times. Art: 9 Fan-Service: There is much fan service ... Oct 6, 2020
I'm not really a critic who knows every deep meaning, reading manga is for entertainment and I got it with Gantz.
I don't really want to write a long review but if someone reads this then I suggest you read Gantz for yourself. The whole concept is weird, really fucking weird. All the Immigrants (Aliens) are incredibly weird, everything is weird. My Favorite Part of this story is the characters. Especially Kuroro. He's our main protagonist and the most reliable MC. At first anyway, but the character development is fantastic. His relations with Tae are also wholesome and we must protect her. We have a ... Jul 1, 2021
Gantz
I saw the Gantz anime years ago and liked it, or at least remembered it well. After giving him another try, I was disappointed. You rarely find such a bad implementation, at least that's what I thought. My curiosity was strong and so I started the manga, which I read through in 5 days. To be honest, he entertained me better than I thought, otherwise I wouldn't have finished reading it so quickly. Problem is, Gantz is only good from the entertainment point of view, if you take a closer look at the manga, it just oozes a lack of experience. [Story - 5] The concept and the ... May 24, 2020
Gantz is a popular manga that has been in print since 2000. The creators of the series released the final issue in August 2013, and fans were anything but satisfied with the ending. Gantz was not afraid to push boundaries, offering an entertaining mixture of gore, sex, and philosophy between the front and back covers of each issue. It got to the core of what mankind is capable of, sometimes depicting characters going above and beyond for others, but more often showing the selfishness that is our desire to live.
This series really made one think, questioning religion, mortality, and even what the human soul is. ... Jan 3, 2014
Oh GANTZ’s the first time I know this manga is form its anime that I loved so much and ending with a lot of mystery and question, so my curiosity brought me to these manga. And what I got here was a Fantastic story more than what I or even you can ever imagine.
Well the character design of these manga is more close to the realistic people in real life, you’re not gonna find people with big eyes, big head and colorful hair or Moe character in here, but a violence and graphic picture everywhere. Because these manga is all about “Murdering Aliens”… so ... Apr 20, 2020
It's 2020 and I'm writing a review about Gantz. That's how good this manga is!
In order to appreciate this unique masterpiece you need to be comfortable with: Mass genocides, blood, gore, cute girls dismembered, hot girls dissolved in acid, love stories ending in death, sex, sex interspecies, all possible kinds of brutal death, drug abuse, ultraviolence, rape, nudity (A LOT OF NUDITY!), well... you need to be comfortable with a lot of stuff. Why? Because Gantz is merciless, there's no room for good things, for a future, there's only the endless fear of one battle after another, one delirious monster after the other, while your companions disappear ... I'm reading it for the second time and am now convinced what is my favorite Manga of all time.
People say that it's fcked up but this manga has way deeper meanings than people seem to grasp. I haven't seen a manga that felt that realistic. Any reaction from the characters feel like it could happen in our own lifes and the consequences of events go one after the other being stronger and stronger while being able to make so much sense when they hit. Even though I feel it's a really psychological manga it isn't less of a romance/drama with huge emotional depth. What I love the most ... Aug 2, 2016

My commentary focusing on the relationship between the leading male and main female protagonist: In chapter 2 an event takes place that should deeply traumatize the entire cast. The unconscious, naked female main protagonist is introduced. The leading protagonist's only thought is of arousal. We immediately discover that she has just attempted suicide. His only thought following this discovery is "This chick is hot!" She is then dragged away into a back room by a "bad" male side character who attempts to rape her without explanation. The scene is only depicted by 2 panels of the man unzipping his trousers. She is eventually saved by ... Dec 1, 2016
2 teens dies via "subway attack," finds themselves in a room somewhere in tokyo with some other people. they are then sent on missions to kill aliens by a weird black ball. I read this manga because i liked the anime adaption and wanted more of it. To my amazement, these 383 chapters delivers the most intense and interesting science fiction I have ever gazed upon.
Story: 10/10 every large story arc is unique and great in its own way. Each arc presents a different set of problems and rules our protagonists must endure or bypass. The setting is almost never the same, and the intensity of ... Mar 19, 2020
Spoilers warning!!!!!!
. . . . Story - 8 In my opinion, it had a great story build-up towards 'near' the end where I felt very disappointed. Why? Honestly, it's because of Reika and Suzuki's death after the alien(s) in the room of truth resurrected them. Like, why though? I know that they're trying to prove their point (humans are just 'things), but I was really hoping that Kato would've won the argument. I don't mind Kei's clone dying and yes I understand that he killed Reika to build up Kei's clone's death, but they don't have to kill off Reika and Suzuki at all. Kinda disappointed to be honest. Especially ... Apr 21, 2021
If you hate Gantz, you're wrong.
As I watch the mainstream popularity of Junji Ito continue to grow (and it's deserved - he's amazing), I can't help but think of Hiroya Oku, and in particular his Gantz, and just think... how strange it is that society is so much more accepting of extreme violence, horror, disfiguration - to the point of mainstream acceptance and praise - yet still quite queasy when it comes to sexuality. It's one of the two points people use to attack the Gantz series - and truthfully - if you aren't interested in 'fan service', you probably should steer clear of this series, ... Jul 13, 2009
Decent manga , really different from the normal manga type. There is a lot of emphasis on the psychology of many different characters, lot of bloods and really unpredictable many heroes dies at random time.
If you like manga that contain violence and that is orignal at the same time its definitely for you. Jul 25, 2021
Jul 1, 2019
Gantz will always be one of my favorite manga ever created.
I will try to touch a different subjects for this review - hope you will enjoy it. Minor spoliers in the first half of the review. This manga explores human nature in an extreme condition. The Story starts as a survival game with the awful horny main character Kei Kuruno and his friend Kato, that instead of dying like 2 complete idiots to a train - they "teleported" to a room with a black ball and alot of confused people, after a few minutes of a vague explations by the black ball they call "Gantz" they sent to ... |
