Synopsis

It's about a war between Koukoku (The Imperial country) and Teikoku (The Empire).

The main charactor Shinjou Naoe, First Lieutenant of the Koukoku army, is thrown into a long desperate war. The sudden invasion by Teikoku East division crushed the Koukoku North Defense Forces. Shinjou and his 600 men battalion was ordered to battle in the rear and delay the advance of Teikoku 40,000 men army.

Background

Koukoku no Shugosha is an adaptaion of Satou Daisuke's alternate-history war novels by the same title.

Two times in a row, in 2005 and 2006, the manga series was chosen as Jury Recommended Work at the 9th and 10th Japanese Media Arts Awards Festival in manga division. It was also one of nominee works for the 1st Manga Taisho Award in 2008.

The Koukoku world is quite a "fantasy"; it has dragons, telepathy and saver tigers, but its "reallity" of war and soldiers struck me so much that I choose this title as the BEST military manga for decades.

The technique background of this manga is equivalent to that in 18-19th century: the main gun arms are matchlocks and the cavalry charge is the strongest attack in the close combat. This restrictied background makes the battle tactically exciting. Shinjo wisely takes advantage of the telepathy soldiers and saver tigers and fights against Teikoku army 50 times larger than his ballation.
