It was like a fever dream when I first read and watched Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji back in 2015 or so. It was at that time that I was in a phase of reading and watching shoujo anime, mainly Nana and Itazura na Kiss. All three of them hold a special place in my heart. But after finally catching up the last chapters that weren’t available to me back in 2015 for Wolf Girl and Black Prince, it really makes me wonder what was so charming to it. It probably was due to the “freshness” that I was exposed to. I was never a ... huge fan of romance/Shoujo, so these few series that I read and watched ended up being my first exposure to the genre, and I think this novelty of discovering something new made me hooked onto each of these series; Looking back, especially at Wolf Girl and Black Prince, and reading these last few chapters, those were rose colored days. The conclusion was just what I expected: come on, it’s a shoujo romance manga. It wasn’t anything unique, but it served as a closure to a series I had come to like.

Now, I don’t particularly think that judging this manga for the concluding chapters is very fair, when the bulk of the story and charm is from the beginning chapters. I can’t help but look back on the series with some nostalgia. There have been a lot more different romance shows and shoujo that I have read and watched, but none of it comes close to the feelings that I had when reading this particular series. Something about it makes it a lot more special than other series. It doesn’t have a super unique plot and characters, but it has it’s polish that few shoujo have. I think it could have been just the fact that the execution of events seemed a lot more natural than any other series I read, and as a result, I felt more invested in the characters. Being exposed to the female lead’s feelings and how the story panned out made me want to cheer her on. I was hoping she would get what she wanted, after all the setbacks that she went through, and that was something that I hadn’t experienced in other shoujo works before. There’s some unnecessary drama, but that’s all part of the shoujo experience in the first place. It’s a classic romance formula done well.

My thoughts on this series (rlly minor spoilers):

The story may seem unrealistic, but I think it makes sense with the personalities of the characters. A popular and sadistic guy, Kyoya, agrees to act as the fake boyfriend for a bubbly and airheaded girl, Erika, just because he is bored out of his mind and finds the situation amusing. A normal guy would never agree to that, but he honestly has nothing to lose, and she's so ditzy and desperate that she'd be willing to ask something as absurd as that, so I have no complaints in that regard.

What doesn't make sense to me is how ... they manage to enter a real relationship and remain together. Kyoya shows barely any affection for her and is verbally abusive to an extent that any reasonable person wouldn't be able to stand. While he does get better over time, and watching that growth is the thing I enjoyed the most about this series, he still says so little and acts so cold that I don't understand how Erika could endure it. I also hate seeing her worship him and having to watch her go from being reasonably upset with him to completely in love with him after he gives her the slightest bit of attention. I can't believe someone wouldn't get tired of being treated like a pastime instead of a lover for so long.

The rivals that appear are actually all good in my opinion, but there were so many! Usually there's like two, but I think Kusakabe, Kasai, Terapon, and Rena can all be considered rivals. It was interesting to see the main couple manage meeting others who seemed better suited for them, and I liked the way things worked out. The members of the main couple's friend group are all well-developed and interesting, even though some (like Kamiya) were really annoying.

What I did appreciate was the fact that there wasn't an insanely heartbreaking or heart-wrenching series of events. In many mangas, like Ao Haru Ride or Kimi ni Todoke, a member of the "main couple" starts dating someone else seriously and then realizes they loved the one they were originally with. Reading the chapters where the couple you've read about for so long is separated is literal torture, but I was glad to see that something like that did not happen in this series.

The art was really pretty and consistent, and I adored the post-high school ending.

In all, I feel like I kept reading the story just to see Kyoya's short moments of vulnerability and affection, and I was pretty satisfied with what I saw. It's a cute story about a very unlikely high school relationship and the struggle of growing up; not bad!

1. Erika was annoying, Sanda is the girl we should aspire to be.
2. Kyouya is arguably one of the biggest red flag in shoujo anime and manga. His whole ploy of the 'dog' and 'master' is pure cringe i'm so sorry
3. What's with that part about Nozomi? The reasoning to why he was a playboy and how he tries to justify it is just-

Okay I recently scored this manga a 5 and I'm increasing it to 6 simply because I'd like to credit to the very subtle character change in Kyouya in the latter parts of the manga.

It sounds like I'm ... shitting on this manga but I read this a lot of times because I liked how Erika's whole existence really said "I can change him" lmao

And if you're also asking why I read this a lot of times even when I'm kinda shitting on the story and the characters right now, I watched the anime when I was in high school. I'm one of those people who are guilty of coming back to these kinds of anime/manga because...this plot kinda just grew on me.

Oh also, I'd really would've preferred if the manga explored on that part where they were separated during their University years. The amount of character growth we could've seen while they were in a long distance relationship was a LOT.

PS. Kyouya was pretty handsome too so that's a bonus

love is really complicated, isn't it? at least, that's what the first half of this manga tries to portray. i'll be honest... it's hard to stomach some of kyouya's behavior early on in the manga (it's a big drawback of the anime never getting a second season.) the whole premise of the story relies on the concept of sadomasochism which is.. a bit much for a school girl romance, but, in the first place, the manga showcases its complete disregard for the general demographic of these kinds of stories by making its literal FIRST CONVERSATION about sex. that being said, that attitude doesn't really last. ... much like how kyouya's sadistic personality slowly unravels.

i should say, before i continue, that this is one of my absolute favorite manga of all time. it hits (almost) all the marks for ME, personally. i happen to adore complicated relationships and drama and dangerous stupidity so that makes erika and kyouya an A+ pairing to see develop, in my eyes. it's genuinely interesting to see how these two grow independently and together throughout the course of the story.

i think what i like the most about this story is the fact that kyouya and erika don't really change as people... moreso that their connection to each other makes them better and healthier people. i think stories that try to completely change characters like kyouya are disingenuous. it's not that kyouya has to change, just that he has to recognize that he can't go on without considering other people's feelings. erika, of course, is a silly and desperate girl, and she remains that way, but she has some really charming and wonderful sides to her character as well.

life, and manga, would probably be pretty boring if we weren't allowed to be mean or stupid sometimes, y'know?

on that note, the story never gets stale, either. there's always a new adventure for these goofy characters to partake in and it's so worthwhile to see how their relationships develop over time... the way they respond to certain situations and emotions and how you come to understand what everyone is thinking and WHY everyone is thinking the way they are. this story makes all of that pretty easy to understand.

the side characters are incredibly entertaining and down-to-earth, too. i think all of them are fairly realistic, for a shoujo manga anyways. i do think it's a bit sad that marin and tezuka take a back seat after the first couple chapters until near the end, but i'm not surprised that everything was wrapped up in a satisfactory way. sanda is always a stand-out for me everytime i read this. she's the most human of all of these characters and i think there's a great balance of her in the story. it's so easy in stories like these to not care about all of the characters, but every single one of them was entertaining and valuable.

it's your standard shoujo fair, i suppose, but this story means a lot to me. it has endless re-readability, in my opinion. some of the jokes are fairly dated nowadays but that's to be expected lmao. i like kyouya a lot. honestly think it's a bit pretentious to only be able to root for characters you deem as "good" and, while there's no shortage of stoic or sadistic male leads, kyouya is probably the most well-written of the bunch. erika is incredibly inspirational. she's not the brightest or kindest or prettiest (relatively speaking, i think she's adorable but. yknow) shoujo protagonist but she makes up for it by having a lot of heart and being (mostly) genuine. it helps that she's really entertaining to follow.

all-in-all... i'm writing this after my fourth (i think?) time re-reading this and i still feel the same, if not better, about this manga after all this time. it's not perfect, but shoujo manga so hardly is. it's enough to me that i have so much fun reading it everytime... because i always do!

btw: the chapter where kyouya tries to plan erika's birthday date and everything fails miserably is probably my favorite thing that i've ever read. i loveeee when shit like that happens.

9/10, what a gem of a story.

Yet *surprise surprise* another manga I started in high-school, and somehow never finished/dropped for no good reason. Let's get right into the basics of this juicy manga.

Story; Erika Shinohara, a fresh first year in high-school who believe the first few months decides your whole life in school... because of this, she's stuck herself with some girls who can't help but take about their lovey dovey relationships, so of course Erika has to as well (except everything that comes out of her fat mouth is a lie). To prove she actually has a boyfriend, she ends up taking a picture of a random boy on the ... street, NOT KNOWING it's the popular Kyouya Sata from her high-school. To keep the gist up, Kyouya says he'll fake date her... as long as she acts like a proper dog. Where does their fake relationship lead, how do their close friends react and when will they confess their true feelings for each other?
AHHHH, this story had a lot of (good) bumps in the road, was a sweet version of S&M and of course had a good cast of characters.

I loved how the story started, how it progressed and ESPECIALLY the end! I find that a lot of romance series from the early 2010's don't have good/satisfying endings, but this one took a turn that I wasn't expecting... they actually showed the cast after they left high-school and how their relationships as partners/friends continued.

I feel that this manga might be worth more then an 8 in some peoples eye's, but the only reason I'm giving this an 8 is because I can't see myself rereading multiple times like I do for other series.

I shall pick up the anime adaption soon! So happy it's on Crunchyroll.

While I didn't rate this a 10, I would have listed it as a favorite of mine if my favorites weren't full. It reminds me a lot of my relationship of the last 8 years and was super nostalgic.

Story
I honestly think Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji had the most realistic relationship I've ever seen in a shoujo. I will admit, it wasn't always healthy, and both characters did bad things, but they learned and grew. Other than that, it was mostly a typical shoujo.

Art
Not as pretty as I would have liked, but not bad. I don't actually think I liked it when I started ... this manga, but as I ended it, I found nothing wrong with it.

Characters
The side characters had surprising depth. A lot of the time, they get lost in the protags' story, but they got their moment(s) to shine in this. Each one got a chance to show their personality and importance.
Kyouya and Ericka...he's a dick, she's a self-centered airhead. I might be a bit biased because, as I mentioned earlier, their relationship reminded me of my own, but I liked Kyouya's character a lot better than I liked Ericka's. He had issues and was downright mean sometimes, but he was in a situation that he never planned on being in and was still, to some degree, viewing it as a favor to Ericka. Ericka was one of those people who assumed that once two people start dating, their interests align and anything they do together will be a blast and they'll always be on the same page. That bugged me so much. Both got better, though, and I fully adored them both by the end.

Enjoyment
I absolutely loved this. Again, probably the most realistic relationship I've ever seen in a shoujo. Especially the -
SPOILER (though not really because every shoujo has one)
- chapter about them living together. I laughed so hard, and I am STILL laughing about it. It was so on point. The frustration when neither party will do exactly as the other one wants, the arguments, the feelings like it will never work. That was perfect. I've been living with my boyfriend for 7 years and we still argue over things like that sometimes. 100% honest.

Overall, it's really good. Nowhere near as bad as people pass it off as being. There are some very large bumps in Kyouya and Ericka's road, but things smooth out. Definitely worth the read if you'd like a nice dose of reality

When I read the FIRST chapter of the series, I was laughing when I saw Kyouya's sadistic side. I told myself that we were probably up for a funny series and a promising start. However, I stopped laughing since then. After the first chapter we can see how problematic Kyouya is at treating Erika and how problematic Erika is for ACTUALLY liking to be treated that way. After a while I almost thought about dropping the series if I don't see any sense of character development or whatnot from them. Around that time I am pleased to say that the reason why I managed to ... read up to the end was seeing Kyouya gradually start to change for the better because of Erika. For me, that was the main good point about reading the series (Well, aside from that bad scene where he threatened to break up with Erika if she went to Kyoto).

Aside from that, I really found the series to be quite.... meh. Honestly the other arcs like Rena was kinda unnecessary for me, and I felt like most of the chapters' events were quite repetitive and were just a bunch of fillers.

Overall, it's the type of series you should read only if you have time to spare.

It makes me really sad to see so many people trashing this manga because of somewhat off-putting start. It is true that the first arc of the series is one of the weakest as hey, who would like a MC girl falling head over heels to a sadistic douchey MC? They're so many other guy out there that are much much better and perfect for the main girl right??? right???.... Wrong! I dare to say that Kyouya is the perfect lead guy for Erika. Fight me.

While this manga pretty much shows a typical shoujo setups/cliche, the overall structure of the story is pretty good & ... enjoyable. Some of the good elements that make this outstanding include, good character development, right pacing and compelling conflict.

Character wise, the author miraculously was able to develop it so well. Just try to compare chapter 1 vs chapter 58 and you'll see for yourself. On the other hand, conflicts aren't really used as a cliche plot device (except for the 1st arc) and instead pushes the two MC to mature and look beyond surface-level relationship.

Can I also say that this has one of the most satisfying ending ever?

Overall, this manga is one of those which you will hate or love. There's no in between. And I belong to the latter part.

SHORT REVIEW:
A fun shoujo manga about a Sadist prince and Masochist wolf-girl. The story doesn't drag out and it hits all the minor cliches in an interesting way. A prime example of romantic storytelling. If you are looking for a game-changer manga, this is not really it; If you are looking for a great example of shoujo manga that is an enjoyable read, this will scratch that itch.
LONG REVIEW:
Sadio-masochism plays a major role in the relationship between the two main protagonists and those who hate the idea of S&M play will likely hate this manga. They will complain that the ML doesn't evolve ... enough through the manga but that is his actual personality. I think that is a childish opinion to assume he would magically change after falling in love because the whole point was that Erika gets to the "real" side of him. I kind of hate that in a genre filled to the brim with female Tsunderes and Kuuderes, Kyouya(ML) gets so much grief.
I myself am a Sadist who hates traditionally "cute" relationship things with very little exception and enjoys the pain of others (schadenfreude). People generally have S or M characteristics but since this is fiction they are played up to a high degree. The ML or FL doesn't need to change, they are naturally that way and this is the story of their relationship. Both of them do soften and harden up respectively by the end.
Let me clarify and state there is NO BDSM, just the emotional side of it.
The side characters' stories are solid and they get just enough time to establish their plots without it feeling like too much filler. I thought all the major characters were likable and hateable at different points meaning they were probably good characters. I thought the art was good but more than that the artist knew what to draw to make the scenes come to life.
Objectively this is 8/10 but my personal score would be 10/10, I can't see fans of romance hating this story.

What do I like most about this manga?
It follows the story of the characters, from high school to adulthood.
We can also see the personal growth of the main characters, Erika and Kyouya and their relationship.

I like Erika very much - she is not the typical naive main character, despite being submissive to Kyouya, she always has the courage to speak her feelings and she's determined. (I was very surprised by her attitude towards Kyouya advances 0.0') small detail: I also love that Erika has different hairstyles and clothes.

I'm ... not a fan of Kyouya's personality. There was a moment when I almost cheered for the other guy but we can see how Kyouya really loves Erika: he's just really bad at showing it. In the last chapters we see that he really changed and he is kinder to erika, even so I think this change should have happened earlier.

Like almost all school shoujos, the story is very cliché and I confess that it has some more tedious chapters, but we can see erika's relationship with Kyouya deepen and grow through different phases (it also shows some secondary character relationships). In addition, the comedy is very good and the drama is very light.

Yet another manga I read because I wanted to know how the anime's romance turned out. I'm gonna say straight off that the art is pretty standard for manga of this type. It's not that it's bad, in fact it looks very nice, it just isn't anything too special.

Okay, so let's get into the good stuff. The characters, I think, are good example of how you can take cliche characters and make them just different enough that they don't feel dull. For example, I'd say the main male character is a cookie-cutter type of bad boy. However, his actual personality is way more sadistic ... than your average bad boy's would be. It's little improvements like that that kept me interested in the characters and how they were relating to one another.

I'm gonna explain now why the story didn't really do it for me as much as it could've. The biggest pitfall that romances have are that *everything* that comes up in the plot circles back around to the romance element, and that's how this manga was. There wasn't a single plot point that didn't end up tying into the main romance in some way. Having an independent storyline separate from the romance-- for example, a personal conflict with a main character or whatever-- would've given the story some body and it would've really helped to bring the characters to life.

That being said, the romance part of the story was done well enough that it makes up for a few of those issues. It isn't the most groundbreaking romance because, as I said, the basic plot is pretty cliche, but the romantic elements combined with the characters made for some very touching and intense scenes. I enjoyed that this manga was more about figuring out how to be in a healthy relationship rather than the usual "we've been in love this whole time, but we only admitted it two chapters from the end, and we didn't get together until the epilogue" stuff.

It isn't the most serious of stories. Like, it isn't gonna be like Host Club where you're gonna sit up at night thinking about it because it was so amazing, but it is a nice read. It's a story that will make you happy when the characters are happy and make you sad when they're sad. It does what it should do, and if nothing else, I'm glad I know how these two ended up, for better or worse.

First of all, the main "couple" is awful. The guy (Sata) treats the girl (Erika) as less than a human being. And she accepts it, because:
...
1) She's so desperate to have friends and a social life at highschool that she created an alter ego with a perfect love life (what she says about herself goes way beyond just lying) and she has to endure the guy bullying her in order to keep her lies safe.

2) The girl FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE GUY despite all the horrible things he says to her in a daily basis, 'cause for her this is "true love".

The times when a better guy confessed to her (I wonder why 'cause seriously, a toast has more personality and determination than this girl) she would say no to them because she loves the main guy. The worst case of this scenario happened around chapter 43 or 44 (I don't remember, I don't really care either way) *SPOILERS* when her middle school friend told this girl that he always loved her nad told her to dump the main guy and be happy with him. He even tells her off and slaps her to wake her up (the slap part was scary by how the mangaka drawed it, and he wasn't that good pf a guy cuz he remained kinda obsessed with her), and this PIECE OF ROCK tells him that "*inserts main guy's name* is my everything, he's almost the only thing I can think of and if you take him out of my life I'll feel empty". LIKE, SERIOUSLY?!

And main guy, OMFG. He was a very bad, bad character, with no development at all through the entire series, and he was a bully and psichologically abusive towards the girl. He's a manipulative, selfish and unsensitive person, and besides his looks (ya he's kinda good-looking) I can't figure out why the girls at school worship him. And what's the author's reason for the boy being such an asshole? *SPOILERS* His parents divorced when he was little. That's it.

And as for the supporting cast... Well, they were... There.
-The girl's best friend: tried to warn main girl about main guy, but failed and gave up on doing so cuz SHE GOT TIRED OF IT. She kinda dissapears at some point so uh huh.
-Main girl's school friends: They just talked about their boyfriends and that's that.
-Girl's rivals: too annoying and just exist for plot reasons.
-Main guy's only friend: Felt sorry for him. He's stupid enough to "help" main girl make the guy fall in love with her instead of warning her about his friend' awful personality.
-Guy's rivals: also annoying and were there just for plot and filler reasons.

Enjoyment: 1/10
I hated it and I refuse to read it again.
This wouldn't be such a terrible shoujo manga if the autor pictured it as what it is (an abusive relationship) instead of painting it as a cute and quirky highschool romance.

Overall: 1/10
When I read it complete for the second time (the first time I just read some chapters I thought were cute), I realized the mistake I made for giving Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji a chance.

A lot of people were saying to read it until the end. Well I did. My sister also did. She has been telling me that she didn’t like this manga but I still continued to read, hoping that I’ll get to enjoy it later. There were little things that ticked me off but I let it pass. What really got me was when Kyouya was treating the dog better than his girlfriend. I don’t care about his issues and I may never understand it my whole life but that is no way to treat a girl, most especially a girl you love. No girl should ... think that it’s okay to be treated like this. Erika is lucky that Kyouya improved but that’s not mostly the case in real life.
