The D.Gray Man anime is enjoyable, if not kind of strange and quirky. The story is a little on the formulaic side, but the characters are somewhat interesting, and the art is quite unique. If you liked Soul Eater or Pandora Hearts, this anime has some similar stylistic elements going on.

The manga is also entertaining, although sometimes the author just seems to totally forget what story she's trying to tell. Things get quite dramatic and dark as the story goes on.

The anime does not actually have an ending, as the manga had not completed by the time it finished up, ...

I believe that I first started the anime and it took me some time to really get hooked on this series.
After the anime ended, I simply had to continue the manga - it is too good not to.

Story 10/10
Maybe some people would say that the story/plot isn't enough to get full points, but nonetheless, the individual stories and past of each character shown up to date are (in my opinion) really amazing, exciting, sad and have some kind of uniqueness to them. (You'll be surprised, because there's always more to come.)
You'll even find yourself enjoying the past of the antagonist(s), their being and the whole ... world that makes D.Gray-man.
The concept is nothing new, but it is the details that make the series outstanding for me. The story each character carries with them and the complexity of the world as a whole.

Art 10/10
I still give the art a 10/10, although everyone who has been reading the manga from the very first chapter, knows that it wasn't all that good - it was still beautiful and looked pretty, especially with all the details and the darker atmosphere, but it wasn't 'that outstanding'.
But now, I can easily say that it turned out to be one of the most impressive and beautiful artworks I've seen so far - especially so the latest chapter after this long hiatus.
It's just mesmerizing with the well drawn emotions and all the details - the clothes, the surroundings, the shading, I can't complain at all.

Character 10/10
At first you might find this and that person annoying, unnerving, weird and whatnot, but in the end, there really is hardly someone I've come to honestly dislike.
The character development is also quite well done, in my opinion. The past of those interesting and shocking/sad at the same time.
Even the fact that there are so many side characters is lovely - all of them have their own personality and are really likable.
Of course, in every world there are people who aren't our favorite, whether it's their mindset, way of speaking, attitude or whatever, but it would be boring if those people didn't exist at all, right?

Enjoyment 10/10
It might take some time to really get into the series, since you get to know more of the characters, the world and the 'different forces' ('good' and 'evil') slowly, but for me, there has always been something to get me to read the next chapter - to have the urge to keep on reading.
D.Gray-man covers humor, action, drama and more emotional stuff to think about.
If you've enjoyed the first 40 - xx chapters, then you'll be pleasantly surprised about what will come next, because (in my opinion) it just gets better and better the further the story advances.
Or let's say that the story really begins after the 'introduction' to the new characters and the world.

Overall 10/10
It is one of my favorite series of all time and I doubt that it's going to change anytime soon (if at all). I've been a fan of D.Gray-man for a few years now and despite finding really good series (and many new ones are yet to come), it has left such a big impression on me which doesn't seem to falter.
Despite the several hiatuses the series had, I've always been looking forward to the date of its continuation.

The first episode hooked me right away and before I knew it, I had watched the whole series twice and started reading the manga (the reading process was still confusing to me at the time). Not only is the art on each panel very beautiful and detailed, but there is a LOT of it. However, this can work against itself, with pages being crammed with a high density of images that takes a moment to mentally process. Overall, it is still very pleasing to look at if you spend the time to absorb all the details.

So, I got into D.Gray-Man on a whim because I remembered watching the anime back in 2008 so I thought maybe I should check the manga, I didn't expect much of it but boy, I was in for a pleasant surprise.
Without wasting anymore time I will start with the review.

- S T O R Y -
The plot is centered around Allen Walker, the protagonist who possesses both a cursed eye and an anti-Akuma weapon since as an apostle of God he bears the ''Innocence''. He joins the Black Order under the recommendation of his Master to exorcise Akuma and ultimately stop their creator, the Millenium ... Earl alongside his fellow exorcists.

The story is well paced, it develops the world of D.Gray-man enough for you to get a grasp on the overall situation that they're in with the Akuma and all and so you don't feel like they're walking in a generic 19th century setting.

Due to the manga changing from weekly to monthly at one point, you will notice that the quality in both art and pacing skyrockets as Katsura Hoshino has more time to think of how she should progress with the story and has more spare time to conceptualize other things that might come into play in the story as well.

The story is definitely not something unique but it's something refreshing than your typical Shonen, most of the cliché Shonen tropes are nowhere to be seen and the manga's edgier tone fits perfectly with the setting.(edited)

- C H A R A C T E R S -
The main characters all have their motives, their goal and their story.
They do feel pretty well developed through out the series while still staying true to their core personalities, the most interesting character so far is without a doubt the protagonist, Allen. He is presented in a manner that makes you feel you already know what you need to know about him but there's this feeling of vagueness and lack of knowledge about him as well and the story constantly teases the fans with a hint of something connected to his backstory and his origin.
Although the other characters also fare pretty well, all of them are likable and with an interesting backstory or motives and each has distinctive looks and personality.

- A R T -
D.Gray-man's art has a really charming gothic art style that perfectly fits the setting and tone of the manga.
While it does start out pretty simplistic, it does evolve drastically because of the jump from a weekly publication to monthly and is currently extremely crisp, detailed and the action is really clear. The gothing charm of the manga is kept intact and is even more apparent now.

- O V E R A L L -
I think D.Gray-man is definetely worth reading if you're looking for a Shonen manga that feels different from every other mainstream Battle Shonen.
D.Gray-man has it's characters as it's main focus and puts the battles in the back seat, although they are still present.

A SERIES FULL OF MYSTERIES , MAKING ONE ASKING QUESTONS INSTEAD OF RELIEVING THE READER BY ANSWERING THE NUMEROUS PREVOUS ONES. AND WHEN THE AUTHOR STEPS DOWN ANS GRACES US WITH THE LONG-AWAITED ANSWER, 3 OTHERS QUESTIONS ARE INCLUDED IN THR PLATE.

We're trying out a random, shonen series at the media library, which I think has had some success. The concept is already a little lame: "exorcists" fight against a millennial Count, who uses the negative emotions of the pecores of the XIXth century to graft them Akuma (demons-machine) in order, of course, to destroy humanity. Well, why not, but the not uninteresting moral pitch (resentment, hatred, sadness as an inner ghost to fight) is quickly eclipsed by nagging fights, drawn without any legibility, and with a very limited tactical interest.

The characters seem, moreover, to be clichés on legs, whose character is revealed more in the ... bonus question / answer pages than in the story itself! The few gags have no interest. So picking up a shonen like that after years of hiatus, and a rather global loathing of the genre doesn't help me appreciate more than that. Some of the starting arcs still contain original ideas (the Vampire who is an exorcist, a nice modern reversal, with a series of gags on the expected clichés) or interesting if not original (the time bubble of Miranado which evokes A Day Without end, The Crossing of Time etc.). But their treatment over the leg, too busy bringing in classy characters (the entire aesthetic of D-Gray Man seems to be based on an unconscious post-modern ingestion of rehashed nekketsu) or producing sparkling fights ends up emptying all substance. .

The trio of volumes read in a bath yesterday (3 volumes in 1 hour and a few, that says a lot about the "density" of the bouzin) is symptomatic of these scriptwriting limits: potential good ideas drowned in a deluge of geyser of energy without interest. Thus, the boat protected by a time bubble could have given rise to tactical considerations on the combat, or better exploit its cruel moral postulate (the sailors will be protected from injuries during the crossing to Japan, necessarily Japan, but their wounds will kill them all at once), but is too busy offering nagging nagging fights (for me anyway).

Strangely enough, the series is written by an author (as for FMA) which doesn't feel at all, although maybe you avoid at least a heavy gritty side or a design oriented for the male gauze. The hero therefore looks a lot like Edward and his acolytes look like RPG / Manga stereotypes: the silent dark with long hair, the funny sidekick in bandana, the kind exorcist with dripping good feelings ...

ORIGINAL REVIEW IN FRENCH

On tente à la médiathèque une série random, shonen qui a eu, je crois, un certain succès. Le concept est un peu boîteux déjà : des "exorcistes" luttent contre un Comte millénaire, lequel utilise les émotions négatives des pécores du XIXème siècle pour leur greffer des Akuma (des démons-machine) afin de, bien sûr, détruire l'humanité. Bon, pourquoi pas, mais le pitch moral pas inintéressant (la rancune, la haine, la tristesse comme fantôme intérieur à combattre) est vite éclipsé par des combats bourrins, dessinés sans aucune lisibilité, et avec un intérêt tactique très limité.

Les personnages semblent, par ailleurs, être des clichés sur pattes, dont le caractère se dévoile plus dans les pages bonus de questions/réponses que dans l'histoire elle-même ! Les quelques gags n'ont aucun intérêt. Reprendre donc un shonen comme ça après des années de pause, et un dégoût plutôt global du genre ne m'aide pas à apprécier plus que ça. Certains arcs du départ contiennent quand même des idées originales (le Vampire qui est un exorciste, joli retournement moderne, avec série de gags sur les clichés attendus) ou intéressants à défaut d'être originales (la bulle temporelle de Miranado qui évoque Un Jour Sans fin, La Traversée du Temps etc.). Mais leur traitement par dessus la jambe, trop occupé à faire entrer des persos classes (l'esthétique entière de D-Gray Man semble reposer sur une ingestion post-moderne inconsciente de ressassé nekketsu) ou de produire des combats étincelants finit par vider toute substance.

Le trio de tomes lu en un bain hier (3 tomes en 1h et quelques, ça en dit long sur la "densité" du bouzin) est symptomatique de ces limites scénaristiques : de potentielles bonnes idées noyées dans un déluge de geyser d'énergie sans intérêt. Ainsi, le bateau protégé par une bulle de temps aurait pu donner lieu à des considérations tactiques sur le combat, ou mieux exploiter son cruel postulat moral (les matelots seront protégés des blessures lors de la traversée vers le Japon, forcément le Japon, mais leurs blessures les tueront d'un coup), mais est trop occupé à proposer des combats bourrins sans intérêt (pour moi en tout cas).

Etrangement, la série est écrit par une auteure (comme pour FMA) ce qui ne se sent pas du tout, même si on évite peut-être au moins un côté graveleux appuyé ou un design orienté pour le male gaze. Le héros ressemble donc pas mal à Edward et ses acolytes ressemblent à des stéréotypes de RPG/Manga : le taiseux dark à cheveux longs, l'acolyte rigolard à bandana, la gentille exorciste aux bons sentiments dégoulinants...

Call me biased, but D.Gray-man is by far the best manga out there. People don't understand why I am saying this because they've only read so much. I have read it all and am still waiting for updates and I'm just gonna say, this manga is more than just "killing akuma". It goes way deeper than that, children out there who are just starting with the manga.

The panels were drawn really well.

The characters were basic but likable. They try to do a lot of things at once with these characters.

D.Gray-man is a manga in where you dont know if the characters are going to make it, because the odds are usualy against them and more than one time they won't get out unscathed and also the story gets more darker and deeper as you read, showing you the good sides and bad sides of the parties involved in the war.

That doesn't mean it doesn't have its light-hearted moments and that everybody is outright gloomy, they laugh and have fun when not in missions showing you a human side even in all that mess, making you eventualy get fond of the characters.

The manga series, "D.Gray-man," is a story written by Katsura Hoshino. This is so far my favorite shounen jump, as it has a fine line between good and evil like bleach that it can be far from cliche. The story's art, character, and world building, is the most amazing things about this graphic novel. I never failed to love D.Gray-man. That's always, been the truth. I feel like the manga could be a bit confusing, but I don't have to many problems with that on almost every turn.

Quick review : Minor spoilers.

Story 10/10: A dark shounen type manga, how rare. It's so fucking good how well orchestrated the story is. Revolving around Allen walker, and a clown called millennium earl, it serves into the battle between exorcists and akuma(demons). Yet, the way the story flows is portrayed as mysterious and really dark. The pacing is one of the best I've seen, nothing is revealed random and everything flows smoothly.

Art: Not many complaints here, most characters are REALLY well drawn, kudos to the mangaka. At the same time, some fight scenes, it's hard to tell what's going on, but that's usually the case ...

D.gray-man is definitely one of my favourites manga because it has the ability to be unique without excessing in the cliche anime tropes(looking at you Black Colver).

No matter how many manga I read or anime i watch, whether it's Naruto or others, this one has a place in my heart! This is one of my favorite manga, I have been reading it for years. There have been several hiatuses unfortunately, but it is never hard to wait. I have reread this so many times I can't even remember the number. I am more than willing to wait 3 months to read a quality chapter, especially knowing that it is more suitable for her health so that she can continue to the best of her abilities. This is a very unique story, following one protagonist, but giving character development to everyone who encounters him. At first it seems like a typical ... shonen, full of battle, yelling of the special abilities, characters that are easy to the eyes, and a cute lil "pet". Even in just the first few chapters, you can get a glimpse of Allen Walker's dark past that unfold as the series goes on, but never really shoveled out until the more recent chapters. The beginning itself is rather dark with the first major arc discussing death and showing what exactly exorcists do in this world. However, it is perhaps one of the most lighthearted of the major arcs. Between the major arcs lay comedic relief which are perhaps the worst part about the story, yet they are still enjoyable and hardly take away from the plot, if anything it gives more chances for character development and introductions. The antagonists of the series are extremely likable and can serve as comedic relief as well as serve to make the story much darker when you find out what exactly is their purpose. Eventually, the story becomes scattered, branching out to multiple perspectives and maaaannnnny flashbacks. Luckily, the flashbacks and perspectives unravel the mystery behind Allen Walker and his relationship with the Noah clan, which is perhaps my favorite parts. Also, the only complaint I really have is the art. Don't get me wrong, you will never mistake characters in D.Gray-Man and they all have their own unique styles. The beginning was actually rather good for the beginning of a manga, but you can tell the artist's health was declining part way through and the art started to get rather off. You can then tell when she took the hiatus just by looking at the art too, because suddenly it changed to a more full look and the characters had more depth to their looks, but that it wasn't as clean as it was at one point. Luckily, it improved as she started getting back into the swing of things.
Opinion with a semi spoiler (take it as you wish): I love anime where in the beginning there are clear cut good/bad guys, but as the story moves on, it becomes increasingly less clear. This is one of those, and it is executed so well you barely even notice it because you liked the apparent bad guys just as much as the good guys. It shows that good and bad are subjective and there are good and bad on all sides.
Overall: Great story, though there were some parts that could have been explained more. Art isn't bad and is very easy to look at, but there were definitely rough patches. There are a bunch of characters, unfortunately the mangaka tends to give a bit too much attention to some of the annoying characters that I really couldn't find myself liking. The Noah clan are perfect. Allen Walker's current state was made very understandable and not super sudden either. The main secondary characters from the Order are great too, though Lenalee can be a bit Mary Sue at times. They each have their own individualities that make it easy to separate them and the way they interact with each other is very enjoyable. 10/10 would recommend.
