I finished the show and I still had no idea what was going on. The first episode showed promise and a goal but it basically ended there. After that it was pure chaos, no linear plot if you followed the main character. If you enjoy wasting your time, this is good for it. I found myself doing other things as I was watching toward the end of the first season just since I made it that far. The characters seemed like they would be interesting, but were never developed. The art is beautiful and the music was great.
...
I will not be bothering with the second season.

This will be one of the few times where you should DEFINITELY watch the dub. Asta's voice is irritating and everyone I know couldn't make it past the first episode. I read the manga and I loved it so I was looking very forward to the anime, but was really disappointed how far the Japanese voice went for Asta. The dub is still a bit extreme, but that's also just Asta in general. However it is much more bearable and the overall cast is fairly good for the dub.
The story is great and if you catch all of its

inspirations, you can actually see that it's rather satirical and making fun of the typical shonen tropes. You got the Naruto: "I want to be Hokage" but replace it with Sorcerer King. However it's a good trope, gives the character a goal that means there will be a more clear ending as Asta either becomes the king or he doesn't. It doesn't leave it a mystery so that it can drag on for almost decades. Speaking of.... Bleach: If you liked the rival captain, but allies concept, you'll like this. There's even a big sword! There's the cool aloof and noble captain who is very handsome and powerful. There's the meathead, I can go on. But if anything it leaves a sense of nostalgia instead of eyerolls. Fairy Tail: Yeah. Just less fanservice. But yeah. One Piece: main character is very simple, yet very charming and loveable (once you get past the yelling). They easily make allies with anyone.
What makes this different:
1. The Relationships. When you think of rivalries, you probably imagine Naruto and Sasuke, being friends/rivals but with a sort of animosity. They aren't at all on the same side. Asta and Yuno have a perfect rivalry (in my eyes ok). They both completely support each other, believe the other to have an upper hand and they must get stronger, and truely acknowledge the other as a legitimate rival. While it is clear that Yuno is stronger than Asta, he never once looks down on him and is proud to be his rival. They compete with each other, but would rather their achievements speak louder than power fights with each other.
2. The Squads. They might be unified the same way guilds in FT and squads in Bleach are set up, but unlike in those, there are clear power differences. Asta's squad is a literal joke. They are so bad that they have negative stars, but they're all really powerful. That part is basically a copy of Fairy Tail, but unlike in FT, you don't get the direct choice at which squad you join. The Captains decide if they want you or not and you might never get to be a magic knight. That part is what I find unique as it shows that all the magic knight squads work together, but instead of each having a specialty, it's more like they each have different levels of popularity/social class.
3. It's done well. Despite the clear inspirations/copies, it never truly takes away from the story, which as it develops, becomes more unique. Secrets are unfolding and it's far more sinister than the lighthearted tones suggest. I think the inspirational elements provide nostalgia more than anything.
I look forward to watching the story take its own shape. Also Yami is the manliest and hawt. *sighs*

This is one of my favorite manga, I have been reading it for years. There have been several hiatuses unfortunately, but it is never hard to wait. I have reread this so many times I can't even remember the number. I am more than willing to wait 3 months to read a quality chapter, especially knowing that it is more suitable for her health so that she can continue to the best of her abilities. This is a very unique story, following one protagonist, but giving character development to everyone who encounters him. At first it seems like a typical

shonen, full of battle, yelling of the special abilities, characters that are easy to the eyes, and a cute lil "pet". Even in just the first few chapters, you can get a glimpse of Allen Walker's dark past that unfold as the series goes on, but never really shoveled out until the more recent chapters. The beginning itself is rather dark with the first major arc discussing death and showing what exactly exorcists do in this world. However, it is perhaps one of the most lighthearted of the major arcs. Between the major arcs lay comedic relief which are perhaps the worst part about the story, yet they are still enjoyable and hardly take away from the plot, if anything it gives more chances for character development and introductions. The antagonists of the series are extremely likable and can serve as comedic relief as well as serve to make the story much darker when you find out what exactly is their purpose. Eventually, the story becomes scattered, branching out to multiple perspectives and maaaannnnny flashbacks. Luckily, the flashbacks and perspectives unravel the mystery behind Allen Walker and his relationship with the Noah clan, which is perhaps my favorite parts. Also, the only complaint I really have is the art. Don't get me wrong, you will never mistake characters in D.Gray-Man and they all have their own unique styles. The beginning was actually rather good for the beginning of a manga, but you can tell the artist's health was declining part way through and the art started to get rather off. You can then tell when she took the hiatus just by looking at the art too, because suddenly it changed to a more full look and the characters had more depth to their looks, but that it wasn't as clean as it was at one point. Luckily, it improved as she started getting back into the swing of things.
Opinion with a semi spoiler (take it as you wish): I love anime where in the beginning there are clear cut good/bad guys, but as the story moves on, it becomes increasingly less clear. This is one of those, and it is executed so well you barely even notice it because you liked the apparent bad guys just as much as the good guys. It shows that good and bad are subjective and there are good and bad on all sides.
Overall: Great story, though there were some parts that could have been explained more. Art isn't bad and is very easy to look at, but there were definitely rough patches. There are a bunch of characters, unfortunately the mangaka tends to give a bit too much attention to some of the annoying characters that I really couldn't find myself liking. The Noah clan are perfect. Allen Walker's current state was made very understandable and not super sudden either. The main secondary characters from the Order are great too, though Lenalee can be a bit Mary Sue at times. They each have their own individualities that make it easy to separate them and the way they interact with each other is very enjoyable. 10/10 would recommend.
