Synopsis

Each person is born with a soul, its plan determining ninety percent of one's life. People who stray from their soul's fate, whether it be through an unfortunate accident or an unplanned murder, leave behind a shattered "psycholith"—a rock that is a manifestation of their soul. When these are left behind, they stain the environment, ultimately creating "negative points"—places that interfere with a soul's plan, causing a vicious cycle of misfortune.

The righteous Sakurai and apathetic Amano are a pair of specialists tasked with ensuring that souls follow their natural paths. To that end, as part of Psycholith Collection & Cleaning, they collect and dispose of shattered psycholiths and clean up stains. But there is another side to their job, one with moral ambiguity. They must also prevent psycholiths from shattering—even if that entails killing the soul's host.

A must read, not only for the great story it tells but also for the short amount of chapters it has. So even if you dislike it, it's not a waste of time (Imagine reading a 400 chapter manga that you didn't like very much).

Story: The plot is as interesting as the characters that drive it. Really interesting concepts and world building (albeit, little world building considering this takes place in modern japan), with a understandable story that doesn't get ultra confusing. The main negative is the amount of chapters it has. It doesn't feel rushed or anything, but it has the potential to read more

Livingstone is a very interesting manga. Its premise is one you could easily imagine being interesting and engaging and it makes you wonder what kind of characters live in this and of world and what their lives are like. Good for Livingstone, it had the brilliant artist of Deadman Wonderland there to sell most of its world through tone and expressive artwork. Especially since a lot of the execution and non-main characters is pretty average.

Alright then, let's start then, shall we?

Livingstone follows Sakurai and Amano, two soul-collectors who go about either cleaning up destroyed souls or convincing people to agree to let the duo read more

There is a unique idea here, it's just poorly managed and executed. Not only was the story rushed at the very end, but the beginning lacked depth. It felt like the writer would dip their toes into spiritual themes, but then pivot into empty resolutions. This manga is way too safe to pique my personal interest. I wish the story had a more coherent and extensive representation of what is going on instead of giving half-ass explanations. This really feels like poorly assembled cliff-notes. Writer needs to allow himself time/chapters to fully construct his vision.

The artwork is the best part of the manga, but doesn't read more

Preliminary
Livingstone is a collaboration manga between Maekawa Tomohiro, the author and Kataoka Jinsei, the artist. You might have known Kataoka's work from before: Eureka Seven.

First lemme explain what is the 'living-stone'. Living stone is the soul stone of a human being, which weight approximately 30 grams according to Professor Duncan who did an experiment to determine the weight of human soul.

This manga tells a story of two guys, Shozo Sakurai and Amano. Their job is to hunt and prevent people from their unplanned/unnatural death or otherwise to recover the "living-stone". To make sure that the next person will not suffers the same fate as the read more
