Started reading this today after reading Love is War, another one of his works. To start off, I honestly got mislead by the cover art and thought is was just going down the Shounen/Shoujo path; boy was I wrong... This story definitely has what I look for in most Manga.

1) Catches my attention
2) Leaves me on the edge of my seat
3) Has some sort emotional rollercoaster/a sense of realism
Lastly,
4) A clear story with a goal in mind (this isn't a must, but it definitely helps with most things I read)

Long story short; I definitely recommend reading this, it wont disappoint.

One of the few sleeves that as you go you are attracted to more and more.
The beginning of the story cannot be one of the best, at the beginning of the second chapter, it simply hooks you up and you want to keep reading more as you read the story.
The characters are unique, including with art remains a simply amazing result.
The protagonist is the typical character who has a single objective and to reach that goal he will have to do many things, which can corrupt him.

A story that manages to combine quite a few things together to create something very interesting. The story tackles the entertainment industry and a lot of its different parts from clean to unbelievably dirty. It also manages to highlight the serious flaws in idol culture while not dissing the actual hardworking people just trying to reach their dreams or saying that idols as a whole shouldn’t exist or are dumb. Oshi no Ko is very cliché in the first chapters but when you let it air out a little that's when it opens up and takes you in just like a nice scotch's smell. Oshi no Ko story is interesting and nicely paced with a lot of events. Character development is outstanding that leaves you with a melancholic feeling after reading. Oshi no Ko art is overall a nine out of ten, outstanding panel art. I've read thousands of manga and I hate most of them but this one I like so I would give it a 9/10 and would highly recommend!

From the creator of Kaguya-sama, Oshi no Ko is an unfiltered look into Japan's entertainment industry, and it is definitely one of the best ongoing manga right now.

While the plot does begin in a very strange way (as of now I do not see the reason behind why Aka-sensei decided to start off the story in that fashion, but only time will tell) and the motivation of the MC makes it more like a revenge story, Oshi no Ko's main plot is exploring the different facets of the entertainment industry. In the span of 57 chapters, the ... idol, reality dating tv show, live action, theatre, manga industries have been tackled with great detail. One of the best parts about Oshi no Ko is how much research Aka did in regards to these various industries, and how seamlessly the story weaves the muddied world of these respective industries into the story. It does shed light onto many of the underhanded and morally grey aspects in the various industries, but it does so in a nuanced and respectful manner. Things like cancel culture are very relevant in today's society, and Oshi no Ko tackles these issues and how people in these industries react to them making it easy to understand, and yet not oversimplified. This is definitely the strongest aspect of Oshi no Ko. The pacing of the story is also fast, and it is a highly enjoyable read.

The characters are solid, with each of them having different personalities and never conforming to a certain trope, something that Aka has done with Kaguya-sama as well. For example, Kana seems like a typical bratty, egoistical girl during the early chapters, and you'd expect her to remain like this. However, that is not the case, as she grows into a more mature, understanding woman even before meeting MC again. They fulfil their role well, and are enjoyable and fun to read. Only nitpick so far is MC. He does feel a bit too edgy as of now, and I do hope Aka shows more sides to his personality as the series progresses.

The art is genuinely outstanding. Characters look very fashionable and pretty, and it's just very aesthetically pleasing to read. The art style also does resemble Kaguya-sama for the comedic scenes, which generally works very well as expected of Kaguya-sama's mangaka.

Overall, an extremely fascinating read, there are some minor nitpicks here and there but it is a very promising series.

(Quick edit now that the manga hit over a 100 chapters):

I don't have too much to add on, since the quality is still solid with the arcs that followed, but I do have one gripe with the series that I think plagues Aka as an author: it can be pretty fucking chuuni. There are some panels and moments that feel, um, a bit too melodramatic and dark. Don't get me wrong, Oshi no Ko is a dark series, there's no denying that, but those moments feel just a bit gratuitous in the portrayal of the characters' angst. It's a bit much.

Also still have no idea why the supernatural elements exist, it's just such a weird element in a story that doesn't work tonally.

Other than that uh yeah, still entertaining and thrilling to read.

With the upcoming anime adaptation it’s imperative to let people know how goddamn good this manga is. Now I don’t like idol anime. The only idol show that was pretty decent was Zombieland Saga. Oshi no Ko, however, has become one of my most favorite manga recently despite having idol aspects. Let me tell you why.

The most appealing part of the manga when reading is actually the story developments. The main character’s favorite idol is pregnant and he has to ensure a safe delivery for her. Suddenly, he dies and gets reincarnated as her child… ok… weird. Despite the wacky introduction to the story, it ... serves as a gateway into show business from a perspective of an average person. From birth, both Aqua and Ruby (born as twins) have to navigate the entertainment industry. Seeming like a dream at first, they come to realize that show business is much darker than they would imagine.

[Minor Spoilers in this next paragraph]

The reason this manga sets itself apart from so many others of the same type is the way the author handles presenting the darker undertones of showbiz. The manga takes a look at a variety of entertainment such as acting from Aqua’s perspective, idoling(?) from Ruby’s, and more such as social media usage, youtube, and streaming. While each industry appears calm on the surface, a closer look reveals aspects that want to go unseen. Relentless bullying from people on social media that could lead to suicide, someone not fitting into the socially accepted age group and having to give up on their dreams, being unable to escape preconceived ideas because of their past, jealousy, revenge, murder. Oshi no Ko brings a lot to the table, certainly setting itself apart from “just another idol show”.

That isn’t to say the entire manga is a depressing look at the dark side of the entertainment industry because outside of those moments it is quite enjoyable as a simple ‘making it big’ story or achieving one’s dreams. Quite a bit of the story focuses on Ruby’s journey as an idol and Aqua’s as an actor. Cute light-hearted moments from the private lives of celebrities balance the dark aspects of showbiz. A touch of school and romance leaves the story at the nice place, giving something for everyone without making it too convoluted. The art only adds to this and is what originally caught my eye originally when entering the manga. From the limited amount of manga I have read, this has become my favoirte art style. It’s hard to describe without you just reading it yourself but easily a 10/10.

All in all, Oshi no Ko is one of the most unique recent gen manga and one of the most enjoyable at that. While seemingly off putting at first, it delves deep into the dark side of showbiz, exposing what it truly means to be a star. I strongly, strongly, strongly recommend to read the first 10 chapters (vol 1) and make an opinion only after reading those 10. This is my second ever review so please don’t be too harsh. Oshi no ko is a story that makes the idol industry interesting. Not that the idol industry was uninteresting per se, but in the way that sports anime make you want to play the sport. Blending genres such as mystery, romance, idol, and other unique ones, it takes what could be a generic mystery or idol manga, and makes it interesting. And written by the author of Kaguya-sama, It was inevitable that it is turning out for the better.

The story starts extremely slow, with the first 12 chapters acting setup for the rest of the story. Killed by a stalker and reincarnated as the ... baby of a famous idol Hoshino Ai, the beginning chapters act like a semi-flashback, setting up moving characters, relationships and the setting, using subtle hints and letting the story flow quite freely. While not terrible, it doesn't matchup with the rest of the series, and shouldn't be dropped there. The flashback ends in a bang as Hoshino Ai is killed by presumably the same stalker in front of the twins, starting the story for real.

The story is a mix of a mystery, romance, and idol show each separated genre somehow blending perfectly. On a quest to find the killer, Aquamarine (The MC) finds himself diving deeper into the show business, as the killer is inevitably related to it. Each chapter is full of content and emotions, as the Manga effortlessly switches from an idol show to a high school show, to a romance, and so on. Your emotions run wild, as the story throws all of them at you, making you care for the characters and the plot. While the mystery is the main plot, it seems to run in the background, the gears slowly turning as he takes different gigs. And By showing instead of telling, it presents you with the information while not treating you like you know nothing, using gigs and shows to give you the pieces.

As mentioned, the idol industry starts to be unraveled and explained, each fact more fascinating than the last, all shown through the characters. Each character brings unique characters and differing experiences, as information about the idol and acting industry flows through the pages. Using just regular dialogue and acting gigs, their conversations, while not always relating to the industry itself, reveal small facts and information that constantly connects and builds up big ideas, overcoming the main problem of these types of shows. It shows rather than tells, hardly wasting any time explaining trivial things, hinting at them instead while other things happen. The characters are great for the kind of setting. As more and more gigs happen, they must be inevitably recycled and forgotten, but the manga doesn't feel like that. Each character feels like a real person and receives small pieces of development, not looking like disposable characters whatsoever. And using the eyes of a male protagonist who lived up to 40 years old makes it better.

So far the story shows a lot of promise and can easily be a 8 out of10. While it doesn’t have any mistakes, there are a few generic instances, or things that could have been handles a tiny bit better. These mostly happen in the first 12 chapters, with maybe one or two permeating the meat of the series. Also, while it is stated as weekly it has been acting as bi-weekly for now, one unfortunate fact about the series. The art works well for the series, adding extra charm to it. While not the usual run of mill art, it suits the series perfectly. It stands in a mix of a shojo style and a clean and anime-esc style complimenting the scenes and the characters perfectly.

The story itself is a blend of great comedic beats along with some serious notes. While the story does have many interesting twists and turns, it is not without its faults. It takes quite a bit of investment into the story until it starts to ramp up. It takes an entire first volume for Aka to set the stage up (literally and metaphorically) for our MC.

Oshi No Ko is easily the manga that has grabbed me the most recently. It even got me to switch from only reading physical manga which I can purchase at a store to reading a lot more digital manga as well. 70 chapters in, and I can safely stay I still am intrigued to see what will happen next.

Minor Spoilers ahead, but nothing major whatsoever. Primarily will be talking about story arcs not by name but by number, and will only give story details from the first chapter. That being said, read the first chapter if you don't want those spoiled for you.

Story: 7/10

The story ... of Oshi No Ko is possibly it's weakest element, unfortunately. That being said, it is still great and well told. It captivates and intrigues you after just one volume, and it doesn't slow down. Aka Akasaka being involved is probably the force behind this. He has a way of writing stories that seems work really well for the shorter arcs earlier on. For some reason, though, halfway through the fifth major story arc (as outlined by the manga itself), I really started losing interest. Luckily, it picked back up a lot near the end of the arc and I would gladly reread knowing what happens at the climax. The main problem is that a lot of the things that happen seem somewhat contrived, like this isn't real. This works well in the absurdist paradise of Kaguya Sama, but in this more grounded (well, as grounded as a story about a doctor who is reincarnated as the son of his favorite idol can be) situation

Characters: 8/10

Characters are an extremely strong aspect of the show. The main conflict of the majority of the story is not between the actual main conflict of the story, but between the characters. Characters fight with each other to prove their worth not on the battlefield, but mentally. Excellent character drama throughout, and I love just about every single character. Some are annoying starting out, but they have really grown on me. The development of characters and the relationships between them is also exceedingly interesting, and I think that is where the heart of Oshi No Ko lies.

Art 8/10

Art is definitely the strongest part of this manga. For being written weekly, it is absolutely gorgeous. Although I haven't read anything else by the artist, it is simply obvious that he is among the best in his field. And he only seems to improve over time, creating better and better artwork faster as the series progresses. I'm very excited to see where the artwork goes from this point on, given the topic of the most recent arc.

Enjoyment 9/10

Oshi No Ko has an extremely addicting pacing that makes it simply a wonder to experience. Every chapter leaves you hungry for more, yet tells a succinct story in it. Even if the chapter itself wasn't anything substantial, you hungrily await the next one. This makes it extremely easy to binge read, and I have a feeling that its going to become more enjoyable as time goes on. Very enjoyment!!

Overall: 8/10

Oshi No Ko is very solid, and very good looking manga from acclaimed creators, which I hope will keep getting better and continue getting new chapters. I highly recommend you give it a read, especially right now because of how short it (currently) is.
