What is going on with the subs? They're filled with memes and are frequently inaccurate.

It's Amazon, so there's a good chance the subs are AI translations.

They are basically talking like that in Japanese tho? The new angels are supposed to be zoomers with zoomer slang. Plus, there are things that don't translate well from Japanese to other languages and vice versa.

The subtitles aren't dubtitles are they? I don't think they are since there are subtitles credits at the end of each episode.

The only reason I'm watching subbed is because they replaced the entire original Dub cast and didn't even let them reaudition. Nothing against the new cast, but it's not the same without the OG cast, minus one that absolutely needed to be recast.

She says "ダテンシティの新しい法律で無許可でセックスしたら死刑になるんだってさあ", which roughly translated to
"It seems that a new law saying that if you have unauthorized sex, you will get the death penalty"
I wouldn't be surprised if they used an AI translator to determine that 無許可でセックス (unauthorized sex) means rape.

@ggw1776 I watched the dub and they translated the joke as "Apparently having sex without a permit will get you a one way ticket to the electric chair", which is similar to your direct translation. So the script for the English dub have kept the joke similar but looking at the subtitles on Prime at the same time, they've kept what you've got posted. So it's not dub-titles as well. Not sure why the subber's gone for this route, especially since the joke doesn't really work as well.

THAT'S what it was supposed to be?? I was so confused by this.

I'm not even the kind of guy who wants a "direct translation" for everything, I even kinda like the localization for megane-chan armorer from episode 6, but yeah, a LOT of the dialogue in the subtitles has been excessively distorted.

Translating あれは said in a zoomer voice as "what the helly" is just going a bit too far, man.

amazon is memesubmaxxing hard just because it's Panty and Stocking. It's okay as a joke and as a parody but this is literally detracting from the original intent so much it's not funny. if Hiroyuki Imaishi or the Trigger staff wanted to write Gen Z slang they would and they could but they didn't, they wrote them like their own version of spoiled brats. calling panty literally an "old bitch" but we don't see that in the subtitles we see "Karen" and "boomer"

Panty didn't say iPad Kid, she said Chemical Angel Brothers referring to the angels which the translators know nothing about so they lazily rewrote another slang.

Gunsmith Bitch didn't say "Japanesy", she didn't even tried to be playful with her words just write "easy-peasy" don't try to add something they didn't even say

I can tolerate the occasional "sus" and "cringe" because they wanted to say that informally but if we're trying to add stuff they didn't even say just stop, translate it properly. stop trying to be funny it's not your show. Leave that to the dubs where the dub elitist can circlejerk about their localization. It's funny if these were fansubs they'd be crucified for doing stupid shit like this but now it's incentivized and hailed as a good thing.

But this is Amazon, it can go eat shit and die. if it were a different source I wouldn't be exposed to their shitty misuse of their anime distribution practices.

I have been very annoyed at how terrible the subs have been, you are already watching a comedy series thats very funny on its own and the subs feel desperate to try and add jokes of their own that do not fit. Its trying to hard it actually makes things less funny.

I don't want to sound like an oldhead - I didn't really get into anime until the tail end of 2020 - but there used to be these super neat things called translator's notes.

Well, I only know/remember Monogatari series and Gintama who did them for pretty much every single thing that it would make it hard to understand if you aren't Japanese but that's about it. It's a very rare thing these days sadly.

I guess the translators were passionate about it back then and did their best so that the anime fans could have a great experience watching anime with easy to understand and informative subs.

Even ignoring the moronic jokes like charlie the unicorn that get shoehorned in I caught two errors in ep6 subs as egregious as the rape line that I emailed prime about. And two past eps had grammar errors. I hate official stream sites for encouraging unprofessional subs like this. And MTL subs. Being able to watch raw/jp closed caption is really freeing but I'm forced to experience the subs when I kosmi for friends.

And yes they did speak completely untranslatable zoomer slang so I support a level of localization there.

That’s completely not true ,yes they did change panty’s voice actor and kept stocking’s voice actor but the energy is still amazing and the same ,I tried to watch the sub,it’s not the same show with the sub ,panty’s new voice actor isn’t that bad ,panty and stocking dub is not unwatchable just because they changed panty which is something I was concerned about but it’s still better than the sub

I genuinely don’t get why anyone chooses the sub,it’s a worse experience imo,it simply comes down to the artstyle at the end of the day.the sub is very very generic even with legendary voice actors like Mariya ise in it which I tried to give it a chance and my opinion still remained the same after so many years ,panty and stocking sub turns this amazing show to the most generic show ever, there’s nothing special in particular when it came to the sub because I tried to switch between and see if I’m missing out on anything and I’m not really missing anything amazing with the sub

Yeah I agree,I mean from what I’ve heard this show did horribly in Japan because the humour wasn’t very good for a Japanese audience, which is probably why it took 15 years for it to get a sequel

Nice opinions (/s). I've vastly preferred the sub for around 10 years.
Season 1 did really poorly in japan because of the animation style more so than the humor. And it never got a season 2 because of key staff leaving the original animation team.

That makes a lot of sense now that I know that info, the sub is so basic… it’s just like any other regular anime and because of that it just falls into normal anime,I mainly watch sub and this sub is just like any other anime,I gave the dub a shot and it’s genuinely funnier ,panty is way more funnier and from what I know they did change the lines I think quite a bit but it suits it so much ,panty is genuinely one of my favorite characters because of it and stocking is the annoyed gluttonous pig which we all love

Wrong on two counts now, it did fine, not great, but it was a cult classic in Japan. If you thought about it for more than 2 seconds, 15 year old anime originals that did horribly don't get second seasons. It took Trigger like 12 years to get the license from the husk of Gainax, something you can easily learn from googling.

western american media has foregone flash animation for like a decade now. the advent of the gumball series and other medium of animated cartoons shoo'd away the typical Hanna Barbera style that PSG has been referencing. I don't feel like basing the art style on what dubbing is fit is relevant in today's standards.

plus what about the fact that it's literally produced with the japanese dubs in mind. they didn't just outsource who'd put in the dialogue, it's a direct influence of the staff in that sound booth correcting and giving instructions on what should be said in a manner that's suited for the show.

in the end its okay choosing in whatever, the availability of that option is nice, but that logic feels regressive.

@Plopop Hanna Barbera? PSG is referencing more of the Cartoon Network artstyle of the 2000s era

And I'm not shitting on the Japanese dubs by any means, I just remember the original series' English dub being beloved enough that the general consensus at the time was even for die-hard subs-onlys (like me) to recommend it, and imo the new season's dub doesn't live up to that expectation.
