I was doing a search for Erotica and noticed that some anime tagged erotica also happens to be tagged hentai as well. What's the difference between these two?

According to MAL:
9. Erotica—New. Explicit genre between "Ecchi" and "Hentai" (aka Smut).

Smut usually refers to stories with sexually vulgar or explicit elements which, however, have enough focus on romance, drama and developing the main characters. It's often associated with erotic novels and fanfiction for women, or gay romance.

It seems MAL has generalized it to the GL and BL that has a more pronounced sexual component. But what I don't understand is why some titles have both Erotica and Hentai as tags.

This is how jal90 explained it:

Because ecchi tends to be associated with a raunchy presentation and is mostly associated to comedy, while hentai is plain porn. Erotica could go well in both and also in those shows that have a level of explicit sexual tension that does not express itself in the ways conventional ecchi and hentai shows do. Think Bloom into you for instance.

But then again, Bloom into you (a.k.a. YagaKimi) didn't get an Erotica tag, and Futa-bu! got one.

I don't know anymore at this point. Initially it seemed like the 'erotica' tag was for sexual content that wasn't made for fapping and I thought that was a very useful distinction. For years arthouse movies like Cleopatra or Kanashimi no Belladonna were tagged as hentai because they included sex but when thy introduced the 'erotica' tag that was applied to those shows and I thought it made sense.

But I just checked and those movies now have neither the erotica nor the hentai tag and just rated for 'mild nudity' despite having fairly explicit sex scenes in them, so as I said, I don't know anymore what the erotica tag means. Especially if there's entries that have both, that seems pretty pointless and vague.
I probably regret this post by now.

Series being double-tagged as erotica and hentai is a mistake leftover from the initial tags overhaul. As was originally announced, Yuri was changed to Girls Love + Erotica, and so anime that were previously tagged as Yuri and Hentai now have the erroneous double tag. I'll fix the affected anime entries when I get the chance to prevent any further confusion.

Ahh so the old yuri tag had a more sexual connotation. I've been in multiple debates about the whole rebranding of yuri/shoujo-ai and it always seems that yuri meant sex was present while shoujo-ai was just normal relationships without the sex. So to clarify, nothing should ever have erotica and hentai tags?

That is correct (and ecchi shouldn't be double tagged with them either, for that matter).

It is interesting that this change got made. Personally I'd just say: hentai = hardcore porn
erotica = soft ... with sex included but no genitals shown

Ecchi is just showing skin with no actual sexual relationship going on or hinted at.
Though I remember some of the older discussoins with the shoujo ai and yuri ... where some more hardcore fans wanted to keep all their special tags and where I personally wanted to just differentiate between yuri + hentai (hardcore stuff) and yuri without hentai (romance between girls without porn content).

Seems like some people wanted this tag in the middle. (Though it is not used that much.) I think mainly fujoshis needed it cause there is a lot of soft/borderline porn that does not qualify as hentai ... but that also is not just ecchi. (More like erotic with less focus on a romance. A search with the old shounen ai +romance - hentai ... should have found that as well.) This is about guys taking off their clothes and/or dominating each other without showing the genitals.

That is at least how I understand it ... and how it actually seems used. (Though some quote at the top here seems to hint that MAL wanted to include romance in the definition actually including stuff where a less educated person reading the description wrongly might expect well-written romance - instead of stuff for Fujoshis, lol. :D

(A special "demographics" tag might have been more useful? "Fujoshi"? ;P)

Well I'm fine with it - as long as I can find Shoujo Sect as Hentai + Girls Love (here having both tags makese sense and luckily is allowed - other wise it would be weird if this was forbidden).

Edit: Using Ecchi/Erotica/Hentai - if it fits. And the Boys Love / Girls Love if there is homosexuality with this types. Though I don't see why this is called "genre". Would make sense to move it to "themes". Totally non-sexual romance with homosexual couples would be like "romance" + "girls love" or "boys love". (Yes ... this actually seems to work - https://myanimelist.net/anime/6164/Aoi_Hana ).

I'd like to note that a lot manga/doujinshi tagged as boys love and erotica should be reclassified as hentai. Right now the boys love + hentai tag combo almost solely consists of crossdressing and effeminate characters and is missing many entries that are now erroneous classified as erotica.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. It seems that every boy's love manga gets label as erotica, no matter how much sexual content is actually in it.

I'd also like to point out that the Boy's Love genre says "On MAL, Boys Love combines all homosexual relationships between men and explicit genres (Ecchi, Erotica, Hentai) are used to indicate the sexual content level. This means most Shounen Ai stories have no explicit genres, most Yaoi are labelled Ecchi or Erotica, and most Bara are labelled Hentai."

For those who don't know Yaoi is typically used by western fans to refer to more female oriented works, while Bara refers to more male oriented works, though both of these terms are rarely used in Japan anymore. Basically, there seems to be this assumption that works made by or for women are going to have less sexual content than those aimed at men. This is also supported by your observation that the Boys Love + Hentai search mostly brings up otokonoko (crossdressing) works, which tend to be primarily geared towards men.

This is just my two cents.

But shows like World end harem, Yosuga no Sora, Aki Sora, Kagaku na Yatsura and Isekai Meikyu de Harem wo, have actual s*x scenes but still listed as ecchi, you could also say Seikon no Qwaser, Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, Shinmai maou no testament, Masou gakeun HxH have s*x scenes but still listed as ecchi.

I think for anime, the term erotica is created for females, like smut on manga, where is hentai both anime and manga are created for males, I think the main difference between the two (Erotica/Smut and Hentai) is that Erotica/Smut tend to focus on romance, while on Hentai as long as they have s*x it's hentai, not all Erotica/Smut need to show genitals, some just shown s*x scenes but without showing genitals.
Also another thing, in the past TV hentai are tagged as erotica, but when you look at the plot, it's clearly hentai, so basically all erotica can be considered hentai, since it's an animation that involve s*x scenes.
Now for ecchi, I think it has more broader spectrum, ranging from just a girl showing some skin to two characters having s*x but without showing genitals, and from what I observed, ecchi shows caters to male audience, airs on TV in Japan and have a proper opening and ending songs.
Difference between an ecchi with s*x scenes and hentai is ecchi doen't show genitals, that's the rule of ecchi, if they show genitals, then it is considered hentai and sometimes erotica.
