Do you enjoy finding new series to watch under 50k members?

Hello MAL'ers, how are you doing today? I'm interested in finding new anime series to check out and or watch. There are plenty of hidden gems out there that not many people know about. For example, back in 2016, my friend recommended me to check out Cross Ange. Needless to say, I thought it was going to be a bad anime, but it surprised me. It had around 30k members at the time in 2016 but now it has like 180k members. Also, someone last year recommended me to watch Crest of the Stars (under 50k members) and it was a good show nonetheless.

Here is my question. Do you know of any good and or hidden gem anime that are great to watch that have less than 50,000 members on MAL? I recently came across King of Braves GaoGaiGar and it's a Mecha show with only 18k members, which is promising to watch. Here is the link to the MAL page: https://myanimelist.net/anime/890/Yuusha-Ou_GaoGaiGar.

The only thing I don't want to be recommended are sports and or musical based anime.

Thanks for your support and also here is my completed anime list:

I was gonna reccomend Key the Metal Idol but you just added it to your PTW

50k is starting to become a really low number for anything that isn't quite old already or really out of left field

You don't seem to watch much CGDCT but Anima Yell! very cheerful and fun and one of the best imo (39k)

Kanamewo 5 minute short very powerful imo.

Kyuuketsuhime Miyu My favourite 90's anime after Key the Metal Idol and Serial Experiments Lain

Chicchana Yukitsukai Sugar kodomo or seinen? I have no idea, quite nice though.

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki unique high octane comedy series.

Saibi Korean movie, extremely bleak.

Fei Ren Zai really clever chinese comedy anime based on mythological creatures.

Hangyakusei Million Arthur found it hilarious personally.

50-100k:

Maria-sama ga Miteru
Saiunkoku Monogatari
Cossette no Shouzou

This anime has 63k members, so it's a little over what you want but it's a personal favourite of mine. Very solid supernatural mystery anime.

Thanks for the recommendations @Roevhaal .

Kyuuketsuhime Miyu looks pretty interesting to say the least.

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki was already in my PTW list but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Just added Saibi to my PTW list too.

Saiunkoku Monogatari and Cossette no Shouzou were already on my PTW but I just need to get around to watching it tbh.

After War Gundam X. The most underrated Gundam anime because of bad time slot.

Soukyuu No Fafner. This is a better Attack On Titan, more psychological and likeable characters.

great show. Solid adventure suitable for all ages. Only 7,384 members. Hideously under appreciated.

btw, I voted "ehh". I don't care either way, really. I just watch what seems interesting to me and don't go out of my way to search for obscure stuff.

Yes. *Takes a deep breath*

TAMAYURAAA!!!

It goes from 15k to 3k (each sequel), and the longer you watch it the better it is in my opinion and statistically (referring to the rating).

It's kind of understandable why not a lot of people would watch it because the slice of life, mundane'ish feeling with a bit of comedy, CGDCT, and a slice of sadness as part of life is not really something people can watch in a long haul. However, not for me. Tamayura was a gem. It was something special and it's still very precious to me up until this day. It reminds me of my high school days when I spend life with my friends until I eventually have to go separate ways. Ah...

Juuni Kokuki ("Twelve Kingdoms") has over 132,000 members. Dennou Coil has 135,000. Did you check the rest to see if they qualified under the OP's criterion? I'd include many of the same shows you have on this list if the request was just for "good or hidden gem" anime.

A lot of shows I guessed might fit under the 50,000 ceiling included ones like Bartender or Noein. Both have over 80,000 members and had to be tossed aside.

However, now that I mentioned Dennou Coil, I see that https://myanimelist.net/anime/37914/Chikyuugai_Shounen_Shoujo ("The Orbital Children") has just short of 27,000 members. It's the brilliant Iso Mitsuo's first new series since Coil was released in 2007. Like Coil, it's an anime-original sci-fi story with kids as protagonists. It's not quite up to the OMG level that Coil could sometimes reach (e.g., episode twelve), but it's well worth watching.

When Netflix licensed Orbital Children, they then licensed Siren Visual's release of Dennou Coil using the alternate title "Den-noh Coil." If you have Netflix, I'd put that on your list.

I remember when the Twelve Kingdoms had barely 50,000 members years ago and it's a good thing more people are finding out about it though. I'll check out Dennou Coil though. But yeah, I was looking for hidden or gem shows under 50k members to see what I could watch, you know?

Noein looks interesting to say the list so thanks for that.

I'm all for watching some stuff I haven't seen yet so thanks for the recommendation of The Orbital Children @SeijiSensei .

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2152/Oh_Edo_Rocket probably qualifies as my most hidden gem. It originated as a stage play by Nakashima Kazuki who went on to pen the screenplays for Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and Promare. The series is set in the latter days of the Edo period during the Tenpou Reforms. The Reforms were intended to "purify" the nation by banning things like public entertainment and foreign ideas. The protagonist, Tamaya Seikichi, wants only to shoot off new and exciting fireworks, but such displays are banned. He breaks the rules and sets off a firework that attracts the attention of a stranded space alien who asks Seikichi to build her a rocket to the moon.

This show is encrusted with Japanese cultural references. We can start with the famous story of the princess who came down from the moon. The Tamaya family were one of two competing fireworks clans; the other was the Kagiya family. Their names are shouted out during fireworks displays even today. A representative of the Kagiya clan also appears in Oh! Edo Rocket.

Nakashima has a strong love of zany and over-the-top events like those appearing in his more recent works. In the case of Oh! Edo Rocket the theatrical script was adapted to anime by famous screenwriter Aikawa Shou and directed by the talented Mizushima Seiji. It was produced by Studio Madhouse at the height of their powers. I'll admit right away it's not for everybody, but no show is.

Here's a sample (though I prefer the Japanese actors):

And if you haven't seen any of Noein yet, the first episode is available free on YouTube.
