So I tried learning new languages, mainly to maintain my brain health and halt the degradation of age cause I heard that humans are supposed to get better with age, not worse and we only get worse when we stop going forward and start stagnating hoping to remain in the same place. But in the end time is cruel and we have to reinforce ourselves faster than aging breaks us down.

Dind't have much success with traditional learning methods, well I have always been a slow learner. I tried learning French and Finnish, French was way too boring... As I already Speak perfect Romanian, Italian and decent spanish french was always easy to understand for me, but the pronunciation was what drove me insane. I may even say that french is harder to pronounce than Mandarin!

Finnish on the other hand is awesome, I just put it on the side because it's not the most useful language.

But then I tried Japanase and downloaded Duolingo, when It comes to grammar it is incredibly easy and also the pronunciation isn't hard at all.

The most amazing thing is that after only 17 days in a row of duolingo I can finally read Japanese! Only Hiragana tho...but I'm still amazed of myself!

I mean, it's not unheard of learning languages fast, I have learnt Italian in 1 month but because I'm romanian and the two languages are incredibly similar, romanian is just raw latin words and old latin grammar with some slavic sounds afterall. Then I learnt entlish in about 7 months more or less just by playing videogames, but english was always advertised as an easy language while asian languages are always seen as harder to learn.

Here's my profile on duolingo, I'm only Silver Rank because I entered the leaderboard only 4 days ago, I had a guest account before that then I registered just to check in.

I'm glad I have found duolingo, it's incredibly fun and if you want to add me on there feel free to do so, I actually do not know yet how to navigate the social side of this app.

So, are you competitive in duolingo or any other learning app?

I challenged my husband to learn Japanese with me on Duolingo, and we were using it regularly for a while. I ended up on a 30+ day streak and in the Sapphire league before slowing down and then stopping use of the app overall. I also had a background of being able to read hiragana and katakana, plus year 1 phrases and grammar, due to taking a school class 9 years ago. I may just add you and see if I can earn back my ranks after inactivity.

This is how Duolingo gets you: giving you that sweet dopamine release of watching numbers on a screen go up. Similar to how MAL and the day trading work. Otherwise, it's just a terrible app.

I have a 84-day streak for one of my courses. I'm proud of how much time I've wasted with rote memorization instead of actually leaning it.

used it to learn some frensh when I was in highschool, it is a good app but I got tired of games and therefore it does not fit my learning style/pace - i.e. I became too lazy

Yo mate! I'm learning a bit of romanian on and off on duolingo, but yeah... Can't say I made much progress. Nu este uşor U_U

I spent a week in Moldovan Romania this summer :3. Iaşi and Barlad. Will definitely go there again to eat all the goat telemea I can find. PM if you wanna try your french sometimes, and I'd like some motivation to pick up romanian on duolingo again ^^

Yeah, I was for awhile. But it got old pretty fast. After you get to the top, there's really no point to it, no real reward, and there's people who will grind a billion points or whatever, resetting their scores, re-testing, etc, just to game it. It seemed silly to be competitive on it.

I've found that Duolingo is better for refreshing myself on a language I had learned previously but have not used in awhile, more than for learning a language from scratch. For example, it really helped me remember a lot of my French. For Japanese, though, it was hard for me because it was basically just memorizing a few phrases, with no real learning of grammar, or writing systems, etc. I've found more use from Japanesepod101.com, where it is pretty good for learning common, everyday conversational phrases, and the Japanese From Zero workbook, where it helped me to learn the different writing systems.

I thought maybe it was just the writing systems that were giving me trouble, so I switched to learning Swedish, but it was the same thing. It might give a few phrases, but it doesn't go into enough detail about grammar for me.

I plan on teaching my daughter another language starting this summer, and I'll probably use it with her and see if it helps. But I would only use it as supplementary because it doesn't seem to teach the language thoroughly. And, no, I wouldn't let her be competitive on it. : P

I like learning languages a lot, but I never use Duolingo, because it doesn't teach me enough about the language.

I tried Duolingo and I didn't like it. I tried German and went until the shopping category
1. It doesn't teach any firm structure and just focuses on teaching you random words and verbs(Also very forgettable)
2. Very forgettable.
I was competitive on first week but then it became boring and I didn't go with them again

I think Duolingo is helpful but not helpful when you're learning any advance vocabularies and sentence structures

I used it as an extra tool for learning Japanese, but after about 1 year it started to become less than helpful, not assisting me at all in knowing why i got the sentances wrong, and even searching in the comment threads was far too much effort for nothing.

Found pushing a bit harder into reading, and doubling the effort on WaniKani was more helpful.
idk about you but the closer a girl gets to looking like ronald mcdonald, the more aroused i become. CAV

I guess it takes a lot of time for languages to enter permant memories, even I forgot my own mother tongue after a while of not using it and had to re-learn a lot of stuff.

Yeah I guess it has it's limit, once I get more proficient into japanese I will start filming myself speaking in japanese to record my accent and pronunciation progression over the months.

Well, for now at least I won the silver league and got into gold,

It was because I was too limited in what I could say so I couldn't attempt to chat with someone in those languages beyond a few lines that are situation specific.

I'm learning Hungarian on Duolingo and I'm number one so far. For me it's really difficult to find a way to learn Hungarian and I really want to learn so I will continue using this app every day a little. It's like a game and competitive so maybe this will help me.
