Yes, I know that this show is only inspired by the real world, but the way the author imagined the Soviet reality seems a little funny to me.

First, why are vampires a mixture of Georgians, Russians and Romanians who live in very Western European castles? Why is the tincture (настойка) a separate drink and not a type of drink? Why are "Soviet" officials in the 50s a parody of real Soviet officials of the late USSR? Why do characters in the 50s behave like a grotesque parody of Stalin's great terror of the 30s? And why is it so grotesque that even the secretary general is sarcastic about it?

Finally, why in foreign content about the USSR do most of the characters again have Russian Jewish names?

Why not though?

Isn't the whole lore of vampire fantasy stem from Romania anyway?

My biggest problem with the layout of their fantasy world is they call the US the UK, which makes it confusing considering they have their fake USSR name.

In fact, the root of vampire legends comes from the South Slavs, vampires are the only "big monster" in modern global horror mythology that were created by the Slavs. If we talk about modern lore, then it mainly comes from romanticizing in English and French neo-gothic novels.

These are incredibly arbitrary things to complain about. "Why are the Soviet-like officials very Soviet?" Gee, why do you think?

It's an LN, and actually fairly well researched. It's near-perfectly on point with the technology and operations of the USSR at the time.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

I cringe every time someone calls a light novel author a “mangaka”

The points of complaint you're raising about historical and cultural inaccuracies are incredibly minor for a series like this - alternate history-type series with fantasy elements. So much so that the same level of inaccuracies, generalization, and caricature such as those is present even in live action films and TV series, let alone anime and cartoons.

Nothing about this series and how it was conceptualized, presented, and advertised ever once gave the impression of asserting dedication to historical fidelity at all. Right away it's set in a country not even named Russia or the Soviet Union, but an alternate world/alternate reality fictional analogue of the Soviet Union. It being a fictional analogue gives them even more incredible degrees of license to be very selective in what they pick and choose and rearrange to fit their creative vision for the series, and how liberally they interpret and emphasize certain real historical factors while omitting or downplaying others.

Then there is the fact that "Vampire" is even among the genres at all to begin with.

The points you're criticizing are things which would not be uncommon to see even in an otherwise realistic if exaggerated historical fiction (think something like Vinland Saga). This isn't historical fiction. It's fictional history of a fictional place and country which is also partially a fantasy.

Lol, I literally said at the beginning of my comment that I know this is not a historical show.

Yes, but I guess my point is: Is it really an issue at all to begin with then?

My thread is that the show creates a very weird version of a real country, not that it's not a historically accurate version of a real country.

Sure, it can be amusing to take note of the differences to the real life equivalent, especially if you're a Russophile, knowledgeable of Soviet history, and/or a Russian or other Slav yourself who's naturally more in the position to be aware and take notice of the changes.

Well, some things like the lines "my country knows how to do something besides repressions and experiments" are so cheesy that I am very glad that none of the Russian bloggers who review delusional "Soviet" things in the Western media know about this show. Especially considering that the Soviet space program is something religious for any Russian. It is interesting what the French and British think about this when they see the another anime fantasies about the Middle Ages and the Industrial Age.

Yeah, I can see how it can come off as cheesy and ignorant or even upset some people.

In my case, as a non-Russian, American, native English speaker who grew up exposed to and immersed in English language media and the arts in the Anglosphere basically from birth, it's not that I'm unaware that it's generalized, stereotyped, and inaccurate to the real world equivalents (in the case of the political elements; I had/have no clue about the drink and most Russian alcoholic beverages or much of its cuisine in general beyond a handful of things) - it just neither fazes/upsets nor surprises me at all, because I'm used to all film and television reducing other cultures to caricatures, whether idealized or demonized or somewhere in-between. Especially any non-English-speaking and non-Western country and culture, but even sometimes Anglosphere countries and regions within them. Sometimes it's malicious and for propaganda, sometimes it's for humor, sometimes it's out of genuine ignorance, and sometimes it's just laziness and apathy.

Well, nowadays people talk about it more often because of the "post-ironic culture", but earlier when I and other Russians saw something grotesquely European in anime, we used to say "flying angels with machine guns? Whoa! I love Catholic culture! ". Well, you understand what I want to say.

Oh boy, anime being weird. Big fucking woop.

I feel you, OP, you're just reading too far into it. And uninterestingly so. You should go review that one show Apple is doing about space and stuff. On a different website, though.
