I never understood this statement, usually said as a means to point out a flaw in kuuderes too. But, by definition, surely this isn't correct to say. Even if it is, what does that make other dere types then?

Idk, you tell me if you agree with this statement or not.

Took it from google
:A kuudere refers to a character who is often cold, blunt, and cynical. They may seem very emotionless and stoic on the outside, but on the inside, they're very caring, at least when it comes to the ones they love

Do these people actually know what's a "personality?

kuudere's most definitely have a personality, even if it isn't a big and bold one. there's flaws in the other dere types, but i feel like people point out kuudere the most, oddly.

I'd imagine some don't, but I haven't heard of any substantive reasoning.

They just don't have much facial expressions to go with their emotions. That doesn't mean they don't have personality though

I have never heard someone say that Kuuderes have no personality. Most people including me hate dere types cause they are just copy and paste most of the time and used as a way for an author to write more easily characters.

First of all, if this thread is something of a defense towards kuuderes, then you must have given some argument because it seems like you are just angry that some are saying that statement.

Now, the problem is that many kuuderes, beyond that expressionless and quiet personality, do not have much to offer, that is why some believe that a kuudere is just that, an example of these are kotonoha (school days) or sumi (rent a girlfriend), but then you have well-made kuuderes characters like rei (neon genesis evangelion) or kyouka (from bungou stray dogs). all this (like almost everything today) is based on a generalization, a character can be good or bad, personality does not matter and based on it to determine if it is a good or bad character is stupid.

They definitely do have a personality, they just don't really move their face often.

google says they are "always calm and never panics" sounds like a robot and they say robots have no personality

but i like Rei of Evangelion and i think she is considered a Kuudere then

heck if there are Male Kuuderes they will be called Stoics

I am sure there are many kuuderes out there with great personalities. Rei Ayanami, however, has none.

I think some people say "personality" when they mean "impression".

Quiet people tend not to leave a strong impression; quiet characters do the same unless the show highlights them.

Developing kuuderes needs to be handled with utmost finesse and with unconventional ways, which is basically never pulled off, but when it is, it's great. Rei Ayanami and Lain are considered kuuderes, and they're both built through reincorporation so you need to really pay attention to body language and visuals and not rely on dialogue as much. And when they do speak, it's important to understand what they're saying as it comes back later in big ways. So I don't blame people for thinking kuuderes have no personality because most of them suck and the others aren't developed like normal

The simple fact that they get named as "Kuudere" already proves they have a personality, otherwise it would be impossible to characterize them. Do people even know what the word "personality" means? It's kinda funny, lol.

That aside, I think the character means more than the title given to them. Some Kuuderes are straight up trash and others aren't, the same for the other titles, like Tsundere.

So, is this like the opposite of Tsunderes or what? Who makes these new terms?

That your character is a kuudere should not be a excuse for writing a flat or boring character. Many shows have proven that it's totally possible to write an interesting kuudere with a personally and depth.

The term kuudere has been around for a while along with many other "dere" tropes (e.g. deredere, yandere) and refers to characters who are aloof, often emotionless, and quite possibly cold, blunt, and/or cynical. There are enough characters out there in anime who are like this to warrant such a term. Examples of high profiles ones:

-Homura from Madoka
-Mikasa from AoT
-Senjougahara from Monogatari
-Kanade from Angel Beats
-etc

I haven't seen or heard anyone say kuudere has a personality though? In my opinion, kuudere appears to be cool and does not talk much; same as tsundere who is loud and asshole-ish.

Is it new? I've heard the term for years.

Apparently it's not new, I'm not familiar with it though. It's the first time I hear this term.
