Following the conclusion of the 24th and final episode of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou on Friday, a sequel season, subtitled Sotsu, was announced. The official website was updated to reflect the new season along with a teaser promo. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu will premiere this July. North American anime distributor Funimation will also stream the anime.

No contextual information has been released apart from the title. When the subtitle is placed in front of and combined with the previous season's subtitle, the word "Sotsugyou" (Graduation) is formed. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni will have a stage at AnimeJapan 2021 during which more information is expected to be revealed.

Studio Deen produced the first wave of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni anime adaptations based on the group 07th Expansion's visual novels. The first season aired for 26 episodes beginning in Spring 2006. A 24-episode sequel titled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai premiered the following summer, and the five-episode Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei original video anime (OVA) series debuted in 2009. The Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak OVA was released in 2013, but exists outside of the main story.

Passione took over production for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou. It was scheduled to premiere Summer 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and began airing on October 1. It featured a new story based on the original source material.

07th Expansion released the first chapter of the psychological horror visual novel, Onikakushi-hen (Demoned Away Chapter), in August 2002. The eighth and final chapter in the original series, Matsuribayashi-hen (Festival Accompanying Chapter), was published in August 2006. Three extra chapters were released in a fandisc in December that year. The latest installment in the franchise, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou (When They Cry: Gift), was released in August 2014. It collects all the visual novels from the series and includes additional content.

MangaGamer released the original visual novel in English from 2009 to 2010, and is currently releasing Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou in 14 chapters. The eighth chapter launched on May 14, 2020.

Hell yea. Gou was amazing. That 7.15 rating is a huge shame. Can't wait for Sotsu.

Is this added to MAL database ?
“In the battlefield, there is no place for hope. What lies there is only cold despair and a sin called victory, built on the pain of the defeated. All those people who met there have wholeheartedly admitted the evil and foolishness of this act called war. As long as people don’t repent and don’t regard it as the most evil taboo, then hell will endlessly reappear in the world.”

Considering, that author stopped writing the novels after vol. 6, reading is also not the best idea... Also, I personally did not like Yen Press translation for it. It was to bland.

Volume 6 isn't very bad as a stopping point, it ends the 7th yuusha arc and tugrneo's arc (or whatever his name was).
I finished V6 when yenpress released it and it's not that bad if you ignored the epilogue.

I own first two volumes on English and I really want to finish them, but, as I said, I did not like how it was translated, so I am holding for now.

Idk about their translation for the first 2 volumes tbh. i just read the fan translation till V5 after the anime ended then read V6 from yenpress when they released it years later, most of their LN translations have some problems but i was invested in the story already so i read it anyway, it was okay imo.

It depends on the translator. Their spice and Wolf and Goblin Slayer translations are really good, fior example. But in case of RnY translation style was really unappeling.

So, with this show, the adaptation of the original VN will have 4 seasons? Or is it more of a half-reboot than a continuous anime?

The original vn was covered completely in the original 2006 series and Kai. Higurashi Gou/Sotsu is an anime original sequel series.

So, can this be seen as a sequel to both the game and the anime?

It kinda is. Is written by the author, so it's also canon (even if sorta contradicts Higu Rei/Saikoroshi-hen, but hey, lolmultiverse shenanigans can make both true in a way).

There's some elements of Umineko and some name dropping of Ciconia. But those are very soft elements, you dont need to read/watch them to get Gou and Sotsu plot.

ps: That said, Gou CANT be understood with just Gou itself. Ryuukishi was a vapid troll by saying it would be beginner's friendly; NOT TRUE AT ALL. You absolutely need at least Higu 2006 and Kai to even get the plot. They dont explain Hinamizawa Syndrome at all, Yamainu and Takano conspiracy in details, and you lose a lot by going into Gou first (the twists of Onidamashi and Watadamashi are more tasteful if you saw their OG equivalents, Onikakushi and Watanagashi/Meakashi arcs of 2006, Akasaka twist in Nekogoroshi is also just there for people who dont know how important he is in Kai end, etc, etc).

Well, I've only watched anime and for me Gou is basically just extra arcs to it.

Anime only is fine, I talk about people who watch Gou as their first Higu. Bad idea.
