Name order in English-speaking countries is standardly given name first and surname (i.e. family name or "last name") last. Name order in the CJK countries is surname first and given name last. When you read Chinese (and I think Korean, too) names, even when written in English, it's customary to follow Chinese name order. But, in Japan, I think for some reason it became customary to write Japanese names in surname-first order when they're written in Japanese (i.e. Kanji/Katakana/Hiragana), but to write them in surname-last order when they're written in Romaji (i.e. "in English"). I've observed both name orders used in Romaji names, but it seems surname-last is vaguely more common and/or official? To the point where I remember reading about some nationalistic Japanese politician complaining about the custom. A similar idiosyncracy exists in Hong Kong, where both English and Chinese are used. Because of how things worked in Hong Kong, people often got separate English and Chinese names, and the Chinese names can be transliterate into English writing, making it so that it's common for people to put the surname in the middle for formal name statements. As for Eren Yeager, though, that's not a Japanese name anyway. It's an Irish/Germanic name I think, and so surname last is simply conventional for that. You can do surname first if you want to basically do the reverse of what happened with western name order and Japanese names -- i.e. apply Japanese name order to a western-style name. But it's not the primarily-accepted form. |
