I don't necessarily like all these anime but these are usually called gateway anime by many:

Sword Art Online - fantasy/isekai
Naruto - battle shounen
Death Note - mystery/thriller
Toradora - romance

If he's a pervert (and doesn't have a sister ig) just tell him to watch Kiss x Sis and thank you later.
This anime shit is addictive

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 -- has a Star Trek feel to it
Seirei no Moribito -- medieval Asia setting
Katanagatari -- quest-type: "collect <blank> for <blank> reason"

All of those have nice graphics and sound so they showcase the medium well.

For Westerners who like action movies, I always recommend Black Lagoon. The second season, dubbed "Second Barrage," is better than the first.

Depends on what your friend likes, but if you don't wanna get specific about his interests, then just show him any of Studio Ghibli's anime films.

It very much depends on your friend. But mostly I would say a gateway anime either in the shounen or shoujo genre would be a good start. They are easy to watch and easy to turn your brain off.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Hunter x Hunter 2011
Akatsuki no Yona
Kimetsu no Yaiba
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
Haikyuu
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken
Boku no Hero Academia
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
Death Note
Shingeki no Kyojin
Kaichou wa Maid Sama
Dr. Stone
Noragami
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
Ore Monogatari

If he's into to sci-fi psycho-pass is a good one. Also FMA brotherhood is a great starter.
