For me it was Death Note,

Apart from that Future Diary gave me the same feeling,

Another anime that gave me this feeling was Darling in the FranXX

So which anime made you feel the most empty inside after you finished it?

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.

Based on what you’ve seen and what’s in your plan to watch, you will like Shakugan no Shana, Guilty Crown, and Eureka Seven. They’ve got ROMANCE, drama, action, and more.

Code Geass, Oregairu and Angel Beats. Code Geass is the one anime I got a lot of my friends to watch. I always use that as an example when ppl say anime doesn't make u fell or that its childish.

Fushigi Yuugi. It's so brutally beautiful. I'd love to re-watch it but I just can't.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso left me in despair.

It was a whole week crying out of nowhere.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Yuru Camp always left me with a feeling of emptiness inside that I needed to fill with something, preferably noodles.

It must be SAO( Sexual Assault Online). The characters were empty, the story was empty, the ending was also empty devoid of any emotions and me too after watching it got a feeling of emptiness like that anime took the "I find anime entertaining" part from inside me and made me feel empty.

It seems lots of people cried after finishing Shigatsu wa Kimi. I might give it a watch because I hadn't had that empty feeling for months now, really like to feel it again.

I felt the same with SAO, i'm suprised that anime is so popular and got so many sequels. I really don't understand it's appeal.

I think NGE, and also NGE: EoE, when I watched them around 2006, when I seriously started to watch anime.

While I already had some experiences with stuff that provokes one's mind and emotions, I guess I jist wasn't ready for this.

For me I'd say
Nana literally makes me cry randomly like once I was crying like 3 mornings in a week
Scum's wish was brutally painful to the point i took a break from anime for a short amount of time jsjs
Your Lie in April was one I watched years ago but even then id say it still has a great impact
I think the most I've ever cried to a movie was The Tale of Princess Kaguya (which is a Ghibli film) and I'm sure no one else cried that much to it but I watched it on a plane ride and it hit my heart jsjs

Air. it just left me empty. The ending song didn't help as it just amplified it.
That said that piece is one of my favourite songs.

I dunno why everyone is listing only sad anime in this thread.Personally, I feel empty whenever I finish a great series, or one that stayed with me for a long time. Basically, all of my 9s and 10s, and a few of my 8s.

School days, easily. Nothing ever left me feeling as empty inside because of that while also thinking that anime were a mistake.
"The problem with defining even an aspect of your personality by something that you like, is that criticism of that product appears to you to be criticism of you personally. I find it to be a very harmful attitude, [...] you can't rationally discuss a product because you've started to define yourself by its very existence."

I'm here waiting for season 2 that will never happen, it was a nice brain fk.

Selector Infected WIXOSS, although only the first 2 seasons. and Charlotte.

When a great story ends it feels empty in my heart because I want to know more!

I think the original Last Exile fills that bill too.

+1 for Eureka Seven. If not underrated, it is at least an incredibly under-watched anime.

There was a thread I think a few years ago? last year? with this question where I learned the word saudade, a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent someone or something that one cares for and/or loves. I feel it's an apt word for how I feel about some of these so many years after watching them.

Initially upon watching most of these I had to quite literally pause and let myself process what I went through after watching them.

For example, I remember Chrono Crusade really got to me. It was released in 2003 iirc and I was around 12 by the time I got my hands on it. I rewatched it somewhat recently, and the end in addition to the nostalgia hit hard.

Cowboy Bebob.

Serial Experiments Lain.

Texhnolyze, Katanagatari, Haibane Renmei, Mawaru Penguindrum, GTO, Mushishi, Chobits, Rurouni Kenshin (especially Tsuioku-hen), xxxHOLiC/Ren, Hikaru no Go, Akira, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Casshern Sins, Princess Tutu, Wolf's Rain, Metropolis, Big O.. The list goes on, really.

Elfen Lied was absolutely not great, AT ALL, but watching it so young sent me on a trip that lasted a while and I honestly think about it quite a bit even years later.
