i'm looking for anime/manga that involves dance or gymnastics of some sort. it does not even have to be sports genre, but i would like if it played a big role

examples: Subaru (manga about ballet but focuses on other things like romance and the MC's growth as a person), Kaleido Star (anime about circus/acrobatics), Ballroom e Yousoko (anime about dance)

i really like sports genre but i've been really wanting to see something related to dance and gymnastics rather than the usual baseball/soccer/volleyball/etc

(i would also welcome recs about sports genre in general, but with unique sports like card and board games. not the usual ball games)

AKB0048 and other idol shows have material about dancing. I mentioned AKB0048 specifically because it wraps the idol material in a more interesting sci-fi story about a far-future galactic government trying to ban entertainment. (Entertainment was actually banned in Japan in the early 19th century. Read about the "Tenpou Reforms" or watch the anime Oh! Edo Rocket.)

I only watched a couple of episodes of Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, but it has a gymnast as one of the main characters as I recall.

Soirry, but the list of options is pretty short, and you've already watched Princess Tutu, Kaleido Star, and Yuri!!! on ICE.

I don't watch idol shows in general either. I watched AKB0048 for its unusual story and the prominence of its creators, director Kawamori Shouji and screenwriter Okada Mari. I enjoyed it for scenes like this from episode one. The current cast is staging a "guerrilla concert" on a planet where entertainment is banned. The young girls watching from the cliff become the main characters after a timeskip.

thanks! the old one especially looks interesting. and Akagi seems very similar to the other anime by the same author about gambling (haven't seen it so don't remember the name, but planning on watching it), so i'll check it out as well

there was this manga about gymnastics i found by chance:
(edit: replace gymnastics with dance in general)
夢見るプリマ・ガール!
yume miru prima girl

it's about a girl who wants to start a ballet club, but ends up attracting people of different dance types. it's a fun read, though i've only read the preview and it's in Japanese.
you can preview it here:

You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

For those who want to learn Japanese through anime

Hello owlette :)

I'm currently watching Hikari no densetsu, rhythmic gymnastic:

It's slow paced, but rather enjoyable.

oooh coming through with a great rec. i'd expect nothing less from you from all the previous recs you've given me :-) thank youuuu. the manga seems much longer than the anime (16 volumes is no joke), but it looks like one of those manga that are extremely unpopular and therefore hasn't been translated. looks like i gotta stick to the anime

The manga is really great yes!
The anime was popular in Europe, thus numerous European country got the manga. But I doubt that's the case of the US. :(

Especially since the manga is far more focused on gymnastic to really develop the romance in the last volumes, while the anime decided to introduce the romance right at the start, and sadly the anime didn't adapt the whole manga.
But it's really pleasant to see the exhibitions animated.

by Europe i'm guessing more of Western Europe. because if the manga was popular in Eastern Europe as well, i could try finding it in Russian (i'm fluent in it). this series is right up my alley so i would love to read the manga to see more development. either way, i'm going to watch the anime eventually :-) thank you

Yup, Italy and France, probably Germany too.

Oh, and by looking at your manga list, I didn't see Coda, a Nō dancer doing ballet. (with cross-dressing and BL subtext all over)
