What is the manga equivalent to the "3 episode rule"?

It's a well established rule that you should give an anime 3 episodes before decided whether you want to drop it or not. This was most likely done because of the plot twist in episode 3 of Madoka Magica. How does this rule translate into manga? Is there a specific amount of chapters one should give to a manga before dropping it or not?

I dunno BUT I would guess it is 1 volume for those who buy as for the rest I dunno man, I mean it's like 5 minutes sometimes even less for a chapter so a lot I am guessing.

I used to think 1 volume was enough until I read The Flowers of Evil. I thought volume 1 was kinda meh, but volumes 2 and 3 knocked me off my feet, the rest of the series had me picking my jaw off the floor, and it's now one of my top 3 manga of all time.

So I guess... 3 volumes?

I usually say 2, depending on the series length and genre and if it runs weekly or monthly. I think two vols in should at least have piqued your interest, even if it hasn't blown you away yet. You should at least want to read further two vols in.

On the other hand, if 1 vol is just too painful then by all means, ignore it.

But for a lot of monthly series, the first chapter usually isn't a good indicator as it immediately goes off in its true direction starting with chapter 2 (like chapter 1 was meant to be a one shot or something), so two vols is more useful then.

I'd say 2 volumes. It really depends if it's a fast or slow phased series too, but you'll usually around that time consider if it's worth your time or not.

Like 1 or 2 volumes probably? Not that I drop anything so I'm probably not the right person to ask

It's kinda hard for the manga IMO.. Some series like Katekyou Hitman Reborn or Medaka Box didn't even introduce the main premise of the series until chapter 50+ But for most manga i guess i kinda agree with 1-2 volume (which is around 10-20 chapters)
Reality is the lifeblood that makes a work pulse with energy. Reality itself is entertainment

well i use two methods
1. 1-3 volumes - to get the general pace and theme of the manga. use this on most mangas
2. arc vice - i use this on series whos arc can be found online i read the first arc of the series and then judge series, on series like kingdom and some others i used this (not necessary everybody will like this method use this with user discretion)

I usually go with 2-3 volumes. With shorter weekly serialized manga, once they get close to 30 chapters they're pasted the trial period and aren't in as high a danger of cancellation. If I'm not interested by the time they have been considered successful enough to continue serialization, they probably aren't going to change a whole lot more and I may as well stop reading.

For monthly manga, I think the cut off is somewhere in the teens, so around chapter 20 is usually my cutoff area.

"3 episode rule" isn't a "well established rule". It's just some anime watcher mindlessly doing it then trying to pass it for a "rule" to make it look smarter than it really is.
Meanwhile, some peoples are also trying to advocate one episode rule, and so on.

So obviously if there is no rule for anime there's no equivalent for manga. Never heard anyone doing that, either.

I go for 5 chapters, and if im not 100% sure by then i read the first whole volume.
Unless someone actually says "the story doesn't pick up until volume 2" or something along those lines.

I mean, there really is no rule. Even with anime, the 3 episode "rule" is just a suggestion.

With manga, although there are some exceptions, i feel like a lot of them are pretty consistent. If anything, I feel like they're more likely to go downhill than uphill.

Each manga is different, too. Sometimes you can tell from chapter 1 that a manga is garbage, and sometimes it keeps you guessing for 10 chapters. Personally, I drop a manga whenever I realize I'm not enjoying it.

Is it really? This is the first time I hear about it. Makes me thing if I should give some of the anime I've dropped a second chance...

You wouldn't waste your money buying the second volume if you don't like the first one.

All of them. Mangas really change over time, unlike anime because they don't adapt much.

Not everyone are reading brainless manga with ugly art.
When you have something to read and good art to look at, you take your time.

On a ~200 pages volume, I usually spend 45 minutes to 1h hour.

@lady_freyja I don't read shounen mangas and what I mostly are are just SoL/romance manga. Well I never really cared if I read slow of fast, I mean it's my pacing in the end.

@Darek Mhhh... I don't know if I'm slow, but I feel like that's the best I can do. I neither push my self to be faster or push myself to slow down...

I don't push myself either but I sometimes after finishing the page stare at the illustrations for a moment but I don't count that in.

Mhhh... Well what I read is mostly SoL.. So looking at the illustrations is also part of it. But never really tried reading moe manga... Something like Umaru-chan... If I have that thought, I'll just re-watch the anime.

I though you were speaking about a whole volume, hence my reaction. My bad, sorry for that.

Darek said:

Since I though he was speaking about a whole volume. Reading one in 10-20 minutes, it probably means there is next to nothing to read and stare in it.

But since my assumptions were wrong, what I said is irrelevant.

Darek said:

Usually, a chapter can be between 15 to 50 pages. Depending of the magazine publication rate: in weekly magazine, you tend to have 15 pages for a chapter, while a monthly or even slower publication can go to 50 (with variation depending the manga).
Some comedy manga can have a 1 or 2 pages chapters though, and I did saw a manga with 100 pages per chapter.

So obviously, the reading time of a chapter can vary a lot depending of the manga. That's why I prefer to use the volume count to know the length of a manga rather than the chapter count. The volume length is usually more consistent, even if it does vary too.

@lady_freyja You're right that the pages depends on the magazine. I've seen Beck manga when I finished the anime, each chapter is about 70 pages long. Though if you compiled it, it's the standard length of 1 volume which is about 200 pages or so...

Nah, 10-20 mins a volume is beyond me. Probably beyond everyone... It's kinda like what you said, that it seems they're likely skimming it, or they have a very updated reading glasses like in TWGOK...

It really depends, but I think by the volume would be better than by the chapter. The longer 60 page chapters can take longer to read than an episode takes to watch while short 6 page chapters can easily be read in a couple minutes if that. There are 32,000 completed manga in the database with at least one volume and more than half of them are only one volume long. The average anime is 3 episodes long so I think 3 episodes and 1 volume would be fairly equivalent to each other. Additionally one volume typically adapts to 4 episodes meaning that it's also around the same amount of story content.

10 chapters - if by 10 chapters, you still think of dropping it, then drop it.

I'd say 15 - 20 chapters for those manga that usually have 22 pages or so per chapter. And one volume for those manga that have 45 - 50 pages a chapter.
