Sorry to post this here, but I'm really not part of the VN/Anime community so I've no idea where to drop this. I'm at the part just after the first big battle with the Beta, and I'm finding it hard to continue. I'd also ask not to take offence to my opinions, as they are just that. I know it's somewhat annoying when someone bashes something you like, but it's not that serious when all is said and done.

Honestly. I've read quite a few visual novels - Saya No Uta, Fate/Stay Night and Umineko are my favorites. All rated lower than this.

I know reviews are really just opinions being given some arbitrary number, but Alternative is rated higher than them by a mile. This kinda says something. It shows that there's something in Alternative that is powerful, and evocative. It makes me want to continue, to experience what it is. It made me sit through Extra and Unlimited. It clearly isn't made to pander to otakus and stuff. So what the hell is so special about it? I wanna know. But honestly? The writing is making it hard for me to progress.

Most of my complaints come from the main character. He's awful. He's the worst protagonist I've ever seen in my life.
For one, he's angsty as hell. I couldn't help but cringe during that one scene where he cries infront of everybody, screaming at the top of his lungs. This is the behavior of an autistic. I've had people tell me "It' justified because he's been through hell". EVERYONE has been through hell. The entire world is going through hell. Why is he the only one who's ready to up and run away when shit hits the fan? Why don't we see anyone else come across this attitude? Is training not supposed to knock this nonsense out of his head?

Another huge complaint is that he never stops with his internal ramblings. Ever. It slows the pace to a halt. Even after HE says something, he's gotta expand upon it in his own head, and usually it's something obvious. What is that nonsense? It's disgusting.

Also, a more minor complaint, but I dislike how Extra and Unlimited gave you the choice of choosing a heroine, but then take that choice away and force you into a fixed relationship option. Sorry. I don't like that character in question. So I'm essentially forced to watch Shirogane, someone I already hate, have his decisions influenced by a girl I dislike. Awesome.

What is it about Alternative that people like, and is it worth continuing?

The only reason I liked Alternative was the atmosphere, and the writing was pretty good, but I couldn't give a fuck about any of the characters. And yes, you are correct, the protagonist is definitely one of the worst there is.

Whether you want to continue or not comes down to if you actually want to see the ending or not (worst ending ever really).

In terms of worldbuilding its one of the best, but if you don't like it I can't force you to play through it. Its still one of the best VN's out there though.

Wut.

Takeru is the god king of the Muv Luv verse.

The man just needed a Takemikazuchi and he would have fucking shit on everything and their mother.

OT: Takeru improves vastly and besides, the PTSD arc was one of the best in the entire series for me.

If you want to see a full on badass Takeru, play Muv Luv Unlimited: The Day After once you finish Muv Luv Alternative.

And I was fucking pissed there was no Hayase route in Alternative. BEST GIRL BY FAR.

Maybe he does improve, I don't know, but I kinda wish he'd stuff it with that internet monologue. But I can cut him some slack as long as he doesn't do anything like cry and scream in the middle of a classroom again.

I quite liked Kashiwagi. But, hey, she got a fandisk so I should go check that out.

Yes, it's worldbuilding is really good. Most VN's that have events that should mess with an entire world usually only focus on one. This one seems to go all out, though, which is nice, bringing internal politics and clashing it with global politics (AKA American politics). Humanity is fighting itself as well as others.

I always wondered why the Holy Grail war was being fought for in Japan of all places. That question was never answered. In Muv Luv, it would've been. They'd have put an arc around it.

Of course the protagonist is angsty as hell. It's written by Age, the same folks that gave us K-drama the anime aka Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Don't expect to get much out of it aside from really sappy melodrama and maybe some decent mech designs here and there.

Damn, son.

What would you recommend as a replacement VN?

Don't read VNs all that much and I'm not going to pretend to know about what series are the best for you since I don't know anything about your personal preferences. But, Planetes is a great manga for anyone who likes a short sci-fi story with some decent drama.

By that logic, all VNs are good because compared to any other medium, they're extremely niche.

Alternative is pretty good, but I think alot of it just has to do with the sheer ambition of the plot/worldbuilding. It gets pretty good post PTSD arc, but then again, I didn't really dislike Takeru. I like flawed characters more than some bland self-insert. Nobody in their right mind would want to self-insert into Takeru.

Come now, you're being intellectually dishonest and shifting the context. He meant in the Visual Novel department.

Yes, I suppose that's true, he is fantastically flawed and I'm sure his development is great. Or would be, if he didn't already earn my hatred due to his mega-angst. He's always freaking shouting and saying stupid stuff. I just got up to the Sumika scene, y'know, that one where she shows Takeru what happened in the dungeon. I was told that scene, and the CHOMP scene (which, admittedly, had me startled) was reason enough to play the game.

I didn't feel much of anything. Seemed like half-assed shock value to me. Maybe there's a good reason later on down the line as to why the Beta just suddenly decided to take a scientific interest in a random female's body sexually, but I somehow doubt it. Like, why not take an interest is Takeru's body too, logically speaking?

I want to drop it, but there's still a niggling feeling that I'd be missing something if I did. But after the amount of hours I've put into it, it's hard to believe I'd be justified.

Eh, nevermind. It's just not for me. Easily the most overrated piece of work I've ever seen. Horribly written to a T. Shock value nonsense.

Dropped it and I'll never look back.

Well i wont deny that statement to be intellectually dishonest, but i was just parroting the logic of the post I quoted. While certainly there are alot of popular things that are bad, making the statement saying they're Always, implying that everything that is popular is bad, is just false.

I mean, I found Alternative to be enjoyable, but i'll acknowledge that it isn't a story that is going to appeal to everyone.

You shouldn't really trust rankings, even more when it comes to VNs.

VN's are one of the few mediums that proves this false. Almost all of the popular VN's are generally well received.

The premise was interesting but thats about it. Extra was complete cringey trash, Unlimited was a bit better but pretty bad too.

Alternative had an outstanding soundtrack and great production values but the protagonist and boring side characters (apart from Meiya and Yuuko) ruined it for me. What a waste.

Alternative is pretty meh except when it hits its big moments, bad thing about this is there are only like 4 in the game the rest are predictable, the games pace is complete trash, easily the worst ive seen, too many drawn out talking and info dump scenes that look plain despite the game looking awesome in other areas. Overall it feels rushed and not like the war epic it deserved to be, thats probably the saddest thing about the game.

MLA isnt even a third as soul crushing as Swan Song, go check that one out, it deserves to be the true number 1 vn but its probably just too gruesome for some people so it'll never get there
