| Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly present to you the best/most popular characters here on MAL. I spent about 2-3 hours working on crunching there numbers down to percentages. Formula: member favorites(character)/members(anime)=X*100=X(%) Stuff you should know: -all the characters have 10000 or higher member favorites -divided by years (2011-present, 2006-2010, 2001-2005, to 2000) 01-Lelouch -2006(Code Geass) =7.95% 02-Guts -1997(Berserk) =7.78% 03-Gintoki -2006(Gintama) =7.76% 04-Luffy -1999(One Piece) =6.27% 05-Eikichi -1999(GTO) =5.94% 06-Alucard -2001(Hellsing) =5.71% 07-Holo -2008(Spice & Wolf) =5.05% 08-Killua -1999(Hunter x Hunter) =4.78% 09-Zoro -1999(One Piece) =4.66% 10-Hachiman -2013(Oregairu) =4.62% 11-L -2006(Death Note) =4.57% 12-Konata -2007(Lucky Star) =4.31% 13-Rintarou -2011(Steins;Gate) =4.29% 14-Sebastian -2008(Black Butler) =4.004% 15-Spike -1998(Cowboy Bebop) =4.0006% 16-Edward -2003(FMA) =3.93% 17-Saber -2006(Fate/Zero) =3.80% Conclusions and comments down below. Though I do wonder how you calculated the percentage for Saber, since she's in 16 anime and 12 manga releases. 5 If you count just the major ones (Fate/Stay Night, Unlimited Blade Works and Fate/Zero) with 1st and 2nd seasons counted separately. Did you average the amount of watchers, or just picked the one with most viewers, or got the list of viewers from all of them and matched unique people (Is there an API available for MAL?)? You could take it that the oldest instance of the character in anime is from 2006, and the anime with most viewers is Fate/Zero. Hmmm... Which maybe answers my own question. |

The purpose of this thread was to show that list is not as precise if you take into account anime's popularity in general. My thread successfully pinpoints and emphasizes the best made characters. Guts, for example, crushes just about any shounen MC. My list, in fact, cleans out the overhyped shounen characters and gives a better light. I'm very confident in my list. Just by looking at the most popular anime with her in it. I wrote Fate/Zero instead of Fate/stay Night since Fate/Zero is slightly more popular, even though Fate/Stay Night came earlier. That one is for comparison's purpose anyway. |

| So....some of you newer people don't understand why a lot of these favorite shit truly doesn't matter. See...someone like me who has been around for almost a decade on this site has seen just how crazy it's been here. There was awhile (2009-2012) where people were literally creating TONS of sock puppet accounts just to raise the score of their favorite anime and the total favorites of anime characters. This was pretty rampant actually. Also, There are hundreds of accounts that are no longer in use.... I stopped caring about the rankings and ratings on this site a long time ago....I suggest you guys follow suit. |

| Surprised no Roy Mustang, considering he won Reddit's favorite character, even beating Lelouch. Also at 0 LoGH characters. @OP, did you count members that were in the plan to watch, as in have never touched the series? I don't think you should. If you don't count plan to watch, Yang from LoGH has 8.9%. |

Like for example: Steins Gate has 108k Plan to watch members, so if you don't count those than Okabe would have a 5.78% instead of a 4.56% Which would be higher than Hachiman (5.73%) |

It's within error. There are account spammers. There are people who forget to favorite their character. There are people who don't update that they finished the show. There are people who favorite a character without watching the show. There are people who never put the anime on their list but they watched the show. There are *insert an example I currently can't think of* but they watched the show/didn't watch the show/favorited the character/didn't favorite the character. I mean if you want to be so nitpicky go ahead and do a new one with Okabe leading Hachiman. It still won't mean your data is 100% correct. It never will be. |

Personally if I want a list that excludes 99,99% of all anime based on popularity, I could just look at the official MAL toplist since there's barely any difference in the big picture. Anyway, I had a good, heartfelt laugh about 'everyone is biased toward older anime' from this thread. That's the most ridiculous, hilarious, absurd and far from reality statement I've heard in a while. I'm glad someone from the ~80% of anime fans who hate older anime for no logical reason came to clear up the misunderstanding. |

As for 'everyone is biased toward older anime', I don't get where you get that conclusion, it's not like everyone univerally agreed with me. In fact, I see no one that did. I personally hate old anime because I can't stand the art, and I'm too lazy to watch something that old. If it makes you feel better because you watch old anime and I don't - good for you. I sure hope you don't watch old anime just for the sake of feeling better than other people, instead of just genuinely enjoying the anime, which I do assume is the case, and see no problem with it. The fact you're trying to make a deal out of it just shows your insecurities regarding that particular subject. |

| Despite the original HxH still being good, Killua didn't get a spike in favorites til Hunter x Hunter (2011). He had only 1000 or so favorites late 2011 (the year) and didn't even hit 10k til 2015. Code Geass must have a big fan base too I would think. But Guts... The manga Berserk is at the top but anime like... how come?
