I always like movies where the main character gets a makeover or has a total change of heart. (I don't care how cliché it may be, it's fun to watch)
So, I hope there are some anime series like this.

I watched Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and have Kimi ni Todoke on my plan to watch list. So, I hope someone can recommend some more stuff? :)

I think Trigun might work for you.

I'm trying to think of some good romance that might also fit the description... Suzuka, maybe?

Skip Beat! maybe? She kind of has a makeover with both herself and her personality towards Sho. There are only 24 episodes out so far and I think they're gonna try to shell out another season otherwise the anime just kind of... ends. The romance is very slow paced which I like because it shows the more emotional side of Kyoko not wanting to fall in love and get hurt again. The thing I warn you is even in the latest manga chapters they aren't together .__.;

Hana Yori Dango

At the beginning of the manga, Makino was a poor, pig-tailed girl who had almost no friends at school and kept to herself. When one of her only friends falls down a staircase and bumps in the leader of the F4, Makino stands up for her friend (Domyoji was about to hurt her for bumping into him) and suffers the consequences.

The next day, a red tag is hanging in her locker, which predicts future torment from the F4 and followers. But, unlike most of the F4's targets, Makino stands up for herself, showing how strong a 'weed' can be.

In this process, she changes to let her stubborn, hardworking ways show through, and in the end she turns all of the F4 into her friends.

Kare Kano

Smart, attractive, athletic and talented, Yukino Miyazawa appears to be the model student. Both her male and female peers express their admiration for her, often asking her for help and commenting about her model features and characteristics. However, her "perfect" exterior hides the fact that everything she does is done solely to receive praise from others. She has been this way since she was a little girl—a self-professed "queen of vanity", Yukino once practiced playing her recorder until she vomited blood. With all this praise, however, she never realized that she never had a real friend aside from her family and was considered by her peers as a kind of semi-approachable "guest". This all changes when Yukino meets Soichiro Arima, another model student who beats her high school entrance exam score, and is even more popular and athletic than Yukino.

Cheeky Angel

Megumi Amatsuka used to be a boy until she met a person she thought was a magic user. This person gave him/her a magical book from which a genie appears to grant one wish when blood is applied to it. Megumi made the wish to be manly but the genie has a grants his/her wishe but he/she turns into a girl. Years pass and Megumi enters High School where she immediately beats up the school bully who of course falls in love with her. She is looking for that book again to be able to reverse the spell placed upon her.

While physically an attractive female, she still retains her masculine mannerisms and fighting ability, attracting the 'Megu-chan Protection Club', a group of misfit admirers.

Hime-chan No Ribbon

Himeko is the protagonist of the series. She progresses from being a tomboy at the beginning of the series to becoming a refined, feminine and mature girl by the series' end. Erika, her counterpart in the Land of Magic is an elegant princess, but warms to Hime-chan's playfulness which often lands them both in trouble with the King and Queen and Erika's magical broom, Chappy.

I wonder why no one recommended Welcome to the NHK! yet...this show has like, the best development ever.

Also, Natsume Yuujinchou (but be sure to watch both seasons). Suzuka could work too.

Seconded, but for manga.

Also, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Simon, the main character is kind of a wimp and won't necessarily do anything until Kamina pushes him on to do it, but later in the series is just so GAR.

You should really watch " kiss him, not me"

The story really did the maker over thing.
She doesn't really get a makeover.
But something happens to her... just watch and you'll see.
