I was into music before I was into anime so ofc I was also interested in japanese music (at first I wasn't) but when I watched anime I wanted to hear more. I don't think I would listen japanese music if I wouldn't be interested in japan/anime.

Well... I already listened to some J-pop before I learned of anime, but never really paid much attention to it. Watching anime introduced me to a wider variety of songs and singers

I don't really listen to Japanese music all that much, but the Japanese bands I listen to most aren't related to anime at all.

I do easily get addicted to OP and ED music though, and sometimes listen to anime soundtracks.

You've spent as much time in Japan as Origa?

Also, derivative of Western music? Would you prefer they all use shamisen's?
Not everything has to be original to be good. And they don't have an obligation to be Asian culturally anymore than Origa has the obligation to stop making Japanese music.

Most Third Wave Black Metal is derivative of the sparking Norwegian scene. That doesn't mean other bands are bad from being derivative of them, however. Including Japanese bands like Sigh.

Nope. Wouldn't listen to it. It's pure fandom that makes me wanna listen to the music. But if it's translated into English (like 1000 Words) I can stand it. I like knowing what I'm listening to.

Although, I do listen to Rammstein, and they're not in English. ^^;

I'll stick to my English worded songs. But I don't mind where they come from at all.

Well i'm into Metal and rock, so I don't really like pop, Rap really annoys me for some reason, can't stand it. so when i heard J-Pop i was surprised I could tolerate it, as I'm close minded when it comes to music, and normaly switch off if a pop song comes on, but J-pop didn't get me into Japanese music, It was when I heard Maxmimum The Hormone while watching Death Note, since then I haven't really found another Jband that I like, a few songs from Dir En Grey, but the rest of there stuff isn't all what the fans say it is.

but yeah J-punk is also quite good.

voted 50-50.

Right now as it stands, I really only download j-pop/j-rock if it's been in an anime because I don't really hear it anywhere else [mainly cause I'm too lazy to look for other music of bands I already like the song of].

So yeah, just anime!

I don't even think I'd be interested in japanese music if I didn't watch anime unless someone made me listen frequently because before, I had little interest. My mate linked me to a few and I did like the music just didn't really do anything about it.

For me I was introduced to Japanese music through anime and branched out some. It falls into a few categories. There are the songs that are from opening and endings that I love. There are songs that are from anime but because I never seen the show it's like I treat it as it's own entity. There are artists that had done something anime related that I ended up branching off and getting their non-anime related songs. Then there are songs used in AMVs that had nothing initially to do with anime but became associated because of the AMV. Then there are songs that people I talk to, who are into anime, recommend that I end up liking. Then there are just the random searches for stuff that makes me stumble upon a song.

The funny thing is that because of anime, I ended up exposing myself to more than just Japanese music. So I have liked not only Chinese and Korean songs but also Spanish, Dutch, German, Indian, and who knows what else.

If I had to put in another poll option it would be: Anime was a gateway to not just Japanese music but several.

If we got 80% or higher let me know! :)

Enka is more than cool. Also, Imahori Tsuneo from Tipographica made music to Trigun, which proves that, well, see, awesome music CAN be anime-related (oh, and i'll add any of the folk stuff from pretty much any slice-of-life anime to the list of awesome music)

and j-pop is entirely awesome in its own right. like, in a parody kind of way. in a sugar-y kind of way. but most great japanese music i can think of is some kind of crazy avant-prog, noisy free form jazz, electroacoustic improv stuff or other kinds of avant-shit. of course not only, there's also guernica, shiina ringo, kyo sakomoto, shugo tokumaru, kashiwa daisuke, after dinner, eiko ishibashi, kazuki tomokawa, ghost, etc etc etc

all-in-all this thread disappoints me. some people seem to think that japan only has pop and rock. think again.

Brilliant. Though....you did say the word awesome a fair bit.

I have heard the artists you listed and appriciate them in their own right but as you have hinted, they WERE japanese bands and artists in the 70s and they weren't all hard prog rock. The ones I listed are probably the most renown in the progressive or jazz scene but there are countless others.

in the 80s everyone started to go soft and then...things wen't horribly bad and you know the rest of the story. At least J-pop is decent however sometimes cringeworthy and over-euphoric.

Did any of you see the film All About Lily Chou Chou?

It spoke quite badly about J-pop which I thought was quite justified and daring.

my english vocabulary stinks.

anyway... few of the artists i listed were active during the '70s, most of them are newer. and i'd say that only after dinner of these = prog (shugo tokumaru, shiina ringo, kazuki tomokawa... certainly NOT prog!), but yeah you really have to dig deep into the underground to find good '80s prog

i enjoy a cup of sugar-rush pop every now and then, and what makes j-pop stand out is just how it is often sooo over-the-top!

i have not seen that film yet, but I've planned to for long

Personally, some songs that just try-to-be-cute (like those fantasy/shoujo anime ops) can be quite annoying, but other than that, Japanese music rocks!

Btw, does vocaloid count? ^^

I don't remember when exactly i started listening to japanese music, but i'm sure it was influenced by anime. (sailormoon music). But my friend gave me songs around the same time that werent anime-related at all (black biscuits-timing, and a few others) and i just started listening to jpop/jrock on my own without anime (I had a huge dir en grey and gackt phase~).

Now most of the jpop i listen to comes from Drama themes/insert songs/actors i like. Most of which are on the top 30 monthly oricon charts i always download.

When I started anime, I really wasnt a fan of the language at all. I watched my first few anime in English dub and always always skipped the theme songs.

Then I heard Orange Range's Inshin Deshin.

Now I love all types of Japanese music, and its all because of them! XD

I totally would listen to jpop/rock even if anime died. XD

I voted for "I listen to Japanese music that has no relation to anime".
I listened to few bands before watching anime, notably Dragon Ash, which I even have couple of albums. Then there are some albums of various Japanese artists laying around the house.

There are couple of openings that I have on iPod and listen though.
