Okay, so I've got my hands on Haruhi as fansubbed by a.f.k. Apparently this is the fansub group of choice for this show as far as I can tell, but the whole deal about the three different orders in which one can watch this series has me confused, in addition to some people posting comments on mininova saying that episodes 4 and 5 are out of order "in this batch". I've been told that the broadcast order is the best way to watch this show, but can I just watch these files in order or do I need to go here and follow that as a guide to rearranging them? Does it really matter?

The broadcast order is retarted and makes little since.
Watch it in chronological order. You'll enjoy it more doing so.

I think the bizarre broadcast order was mostly to force people to buy DVDs. So the chronological, or DVD order, like on wiki, would be the real one.

Whether or not the broadcast is better than the chronological order is subject to debate, though.

I doubt it matters.

I'd go for broadcast order. The pacing is a bit better that way, plus you'll get the full crazy experience.

I think the broadcast order is one of the best point for this anime. Try to watch it a second time quickly after you finished because everything will make sense and you will see a lot of new funny things.

I watched it two times in a week or so in the broadcast order and the second time was at least as funny as my first (especially the episode 0 which made me laugh like crazy).

I second on the broadcast order. It was done with some thought, as they throw fishlines here and there, leading up to the grand finale. I know I enjoyed it more this way.

Thanks, but none of this is actually answering my question: does anyone know how the a.f.k. fansubs in particular are ordered? Which order am I supposed to presume they're in?

Cool, thanks. All sources point to the broadcast order being the true and most interesting way of watching the show, so I'll just hope that nobody's messed around with these files.

To quote someone on another forum I frequent:

Basically watch them in broadcast order. Stuff will come up suddenly that only gets explained later on, and that's part of the fun. Watching them in chronological order is something fans do, in addition to wearing armbands that confuse people into thinking they're some Neo-Nazi organization around in public.

I honestly didn't like the broadcast order(hence the low rate) so I'll say go for chronological order.

I should do that too maybe it'll change my mind.

Exactly. And in Haruhi there really wasn't any reason to watch the episodes in that way. It wasn't like it was a point to the non chronological order. It serve no purpose but to confuse. The whole anime is very normally made if you just watch it in chronological order. But they made a mess of the episodes just for the fun of it.
Basically is like taking any normal episodic anime and start watching the episodes completely messed up. That's exactly what they did with Haruhi. If it actually served something in the story or the way Haruhi was made i will had no problem with it but there was no reason at all. I was like "Why the fuck is this episode here i don't see the point".

What is "/yawn"?

Well if it's so cool then why to you watch the other anime in normal order and you don't start watching first episode 10 then 3 then jump to 7. It's cool isn't it? It's not like Haruhi was made to be watched in that strange order ether.

Broadcast order was silly, especially since the showed the series's ending out of order. Watch it chronologically, you'll understand whats happening and will most likely enjoy it at a lot more.

Broadcast order.

Otherwise you end up with a shitty ending. The broadcast order was made to build up to the ending.

Yeah, watched it both ways. Episode 14 was the shit. Best watched last, not in the middle or wherever the fuck it is in broadcast order. I don't remember anymore.

Watch it in broadcast order, for the same reason you don't chop and change Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill or Memento by chapter skipping back and forth, and simply watch it in the order it was designed to be seen. Contrary to what some people seem to think, it takes significant talent to arrange something out of order and have it still make sense when you've finished watching it - it's a delicate balance of dramatic timing and keeping track of what you've told your audience, rather than simply shuffling a set of episodes. Not everyone likes non-chronological narrative, and not liking it doesn't make you stupid, but that doesn't mean it makes no sense or is pointless, any more than any other dramatic device.

I prefer broadcast order myself for the same reason as YourMessageHere.

I have the DVD box here and sadly they put the episodes in chronological order BUT when I discovered that they had an extra DVD with all the episodes in a row but in broadcast order I was ever so happy ^_^

That's why some people think they are smart while they are not. The movies you said are completely different. They were made to be watched that way. They are like Baccano. Baccano should be watch as it is because it has a reason for being like that. Haruhi on the other hand is not that kind of thing. They just mixed the episodes with no true meaning behind it. It's like watching any other normal anime with the episodes mixed up. To you get the difference, genius?

I actually watched it chronologically first, then in broadcast... I found the broadcast order to be really weird and confusing, and served no major insights into the show. I guess my experience of it was ruined, but still... That's just my opinion.

If you want something weird, watch it broadcast order first. If you want to understand, watch it chronologically. Either way, you'll be able to see what the big fuss about Haruhi is about.

Broadcast order had a perfectly good reason for existing - if it had not been that way, the classical narrative structure would be totally off since more than half the show is after the climax.

Now if that makes it better to watch, that depends on if you have the focus and attention needed for broadcast order (which is near zero) and how classical you want your narratives to be (if you can stand narrative order, broadcast brings little to the table. If you prefer odd plotting, broadcast is slightly superior. So it goes).

I originally watched it in chronological order and I guess the answer to this question depends on if you will like the last episode chronologically or not. I happened to think it was one of the better episodes and a perfect ending to the show. Like Neverender said, sarcastically or not, it's the shit.
If you don't like episodes where nothing really happens except for a little relationship development between the two main characters then watch it in broadcast order.

In the end, it doesn't really matter, both options are great.

That's what we call a smartass. Like it isn't obvious that is a fast keyboard writing error instead of a spelling one.

I don't think a typo makes you look silly. Everyone makes typo errors.
Why is it that some people here try to win points or something by finding a typo on a post of someone else instead of actually giving an argument or contributing to the conversation. Also i notice that many times when they start a fight about something they use spelling or typo to insult each other. It's like the idiot's way out.
Am not smart enough to answer to your argument with a proper argument of mine but i can always look at your post for some typo or spelling error and make my self look like a smartass.

i'd say broadcast order just because of the hilarious experience of episode 1 (episode 00?).

then again, you'll probably get more fun out of the chronological order, since the broadcast order has a lame end.

If you would check my history of posts you would notice that I haven't made a single comment about someone his typo or anything in that kind of matter. You being a smart ass, calling someone 'genius' in a degenerating manner while making a typo in the same post on the other hand, is something I would comment of. I didn't like your tone in the post you made and to me you come over as an elitist prick ^_^

I knew that was the reason of your correction and that's what i didn't like. Why didn't you just tell me this from the start and not try to diminish me by founding my typo. At least that would be what you really wanted to say.

Watch it in broadcast order, backwards, skipping over Fibonacci numbers and prime numbers. Then watch the prime numbered episodes in order of the sum of its digits, decreasing. Then watch the remaining 2 episodes in ascending order.

So the order should be

6, 12, 4, 14, 10, 9, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 11, 1, 8

Reasonably, this is the optimal order to enjoy the anime.
