Finally picking it up again after keeping it on hold for a long time.
For a moment there, I thought Mathew was going to die of a heart attack while Anne was away for exams. That would have been really terrible. I was really touched when Mathew told Anne that he believed in her, and apparently that moved Anne too later on.

The small incident with the number in the beginning highlighted well the fact that Anne is living in an older time, when common superstitions were widely held by many. The interesting bit came later when Anne & co leave for the exam. The pressure of the exam, and the scenes after the exams, nervousness, post exam blues etc were really well done and can easily be related to by anyone who has been to school. The same's true for that feeling of inevitability when school is about to end or life is about to change.

I really envy Anne and her friends for having such a great teacher. In fact everyone is so nice, perhaps a reflection of the peaceful and beautiful Avonlea.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Miss Stacy is such a great teacher, wonder how many would have even taken the exam if their old teacher was still there.

"How did you do, Anne?"
"Alright, I guess."

And then her results looks like this:

Oh, and it's the first time we see an actual date, 1886, not just "19th century".
