Hey guys,

first time posting here! In order to avoid the unfavorable "look at my list, recommend me something I like" type of post I gave this whole thing a bunch of thought and self-initiative, so bear with me if the post turns out longer than expected.

Current situation: fed up. That's what I would call it. I'm extremely bored by pretty much everything. I have lots of titles on my "plan to watch" list, but everytime I start to watch one of these series I either put them on-hold or just let them be on the "plan to watch" list.

What I can see from looking at my list is, that there are pretty much two big categories I can divide my list in: Everything rated R, including violence, profanity, nudity, lots of blood, killing and tons of action. On the other side there are these PG-13 rated, generic teenie romances. Exceptions are on both sides.

So here is what's bothering the crap out of me regarding the romance stuff: while I do enjoy watching these series, mostly because of the almost certain happy outcome and funny atmosphere, everything feels very generic. It's almost always a similar setting, the characters all look like they've been drawn by the same guy, and even the so called personalities of the characters are at least very, very similar to each other. And it's just got boring. I have a hard time getting into the series at the moment, because I know how the story turns out, or I just get the feeling that I watched this exact anime at least 20 times before (which isn't the case, it just feels like it). The people in these series always need like a million episodes to call eatch other by their first name, another million episodes to kiss each other, and everytime there is a mere sign of sexual intercourse the whole episode goes into a Kamehameha like state and everything from there on takes even more time.

Problem with the Rated R type of anime: Vampires. Lots of them. Everywhere. I know, we all love them, they often look sexy in some kind of way, but some of the elderly (like myself) fell in love with them when they used to be the badass bloodsucking, frightening, killing machines, before they became what I fondly call "The Edward". Therefore I tend to watch anime without any kind of vampire, even tho there are of course exceptions. On top of that I have a hard time finding exciting series, that catch my attention and manage to keep it that way. Other than that I do feel like there is a lot more variety in these kind of series than in the romance once. Might be total wrong, just my feeling.

Important note: this is not rant! I knew the moment I started watching what I was about to see, okay? When I wanted to watch romance anime with "cool" guys and girls with big boobies I knew exactly what I was in for. I just pointed these things out, so maybe you guys can help me out find the next great thing.

What I'm looking for, in short:
- romance or different kind of rated R things, since these two seem to suit my likings the most.
- no "generic" romance kind of anime, including all the things mentoined above. They either bustin some nutz or they don't.
- happy ending when we talk romance, definitely !!no!! open ending!
- in best case scenario about 13 episodes. Nothing longer than 30 episodes (already grinding teeth thinking about 30 eposiodes).

Worthy mention:
1. Fate/stay night. I watched the first episode since I liked the prequel a lot, but yea.. that's gonna be hard to keep track off.
2. Clannad (After Story): never in my life will I watch something like that again. Never. Not even once. I rather walk through fire than watching Clannad again.

So.. long ass post, sorry for that. Hope you guys can help me to find my way out of the swamp.

Thanks a lot in advance, and please don't be too harsh about my english, it's not my native language. And don't be offended by the word "usual" in the title, I just couldn't think of anything more suiting.

This is too long for a recommendation thread.
Make it shorter and straight to the point. Or else it's gonna look more like a rant.

I will recommend you True Tears.

It's the only thing that comes to mind that fits your reqs. Romance isn't the focus but it still plays a huge role in how the story plays out, starting from episode 8.

Also, I think you might be in the mood for a parody right now: Ouran High School Host Club. Yes, it's PG-13, but it's a brilliant show that ridicules everything about romance in anime, including the points you made (and I believe there's an episode that gets quite close to an R rating). For me at least, it's unlike anything I've ever seen. Granted I haven't watched every romance anime out there but imho OHSHC is in a league of its own and I think you'll have a bit more faith in the romance genre if you decide to see it :)

Isn't Spike more fabulous?

Anyway, you could try Zetsuen no Tempest, Rurouni Kenshin bit long maybe but worth the time, Busou Renkin and... Kokoro Connect maybe?

If you want a romance that isn't so easy to see what's coming and is one of the most actually mature series out there then watch NANA.

However it's kinda long and there's no action or anything so while it doesn't really fit what you're asking for I figured I'd suggest it to help with that specific part of your post (the romance part). I can't say if it'd be something you'd like or not, and the art is hard to get used to at first for many, but it's definitely something that would completely cure that distaste for romance shows you have.

The "What I'm looking for, in short" part was supposed to be the tl:dr, but I don't know how to make words bold, sorry for that :/

1. True Tears. One of these anime that looked exactly like what I described. I watched the first episode and immediately put it on-hold. Just realised that I didn't change that on my list, sorry.

2. Shinsekai Yori - plan to watch. Will give it a try asap. Thanks for the tip!

3. Ouran High School Host Club. Yea.. so this is one of these cases of "don't judge the book by its cover". I'll definitely give it a try, but please don't judge me if I drop it rather fast (I tend to watch at least 5 episodes before dropping an anime). Thanks for the tip!

4. Zetsuen no Tempest. I read about it serveral times, but never got to watch it. I'll give it a try, thanks!

5. Rurouni Kenshin. Dropped the sequel, can't really tell why, it just didn't appeal to me.

6. Busou Renkin - never heard, never seen, will give it a shot. Thanks!

7. Kokoro Connect - same deal. Will give it a try!

8. Nana - that one looks interesting. I'll give it a shot. Thank you!

9. Btooom! Playing video game and getting sucked in? Reminds me of good old Monster Rancher. I'll give it a try, thank you.

10. ef: A Tale of Memories - absolutely no idea what this one is about, never heard of it. Definitely give it a try, thank you.

11. Myself ; Yourself - actually watched one or two episodes, but didn't really keep track of it. Will pick it up again and look if it's any good for my likings.

12. Sankarea - story about a zombie girl? That sounds like fun, I might watch this one earlier than the others. Thank you for the tip!

13. Maison Ikkoku - that one is pretty old. I'm not too much of a fan of the artwork, but I'll give it a look, even tho it's pretty long. Thank you!

One a side note: I haven't weatched Buffy in like ages. Spike was indeed a little more fabulous, but he at least showed his ugly side.. and he doesn't sparkle in sunlight.

Thanks everybody, I'll report back asap! Looks like I got a good chunk to watch now!

You could try Macross Frontier, some feel the ending was open but you can watch the movies after the series for the definitive resolution. Valkyria Chronicles is another one that you might like.

Hellsing Ultimate, ah, you've already seen it... ok, what else?

There are Baccano! and Durarara!! by the same author. In both you'll find a huge cast of different awesome characters of which it's pretty impossible to choose mains, because almost everyone is a main in a sense. There are couples there, so definitely there is some romance among other genres.
Baccano! is set in 1930th (mostly, also there are time jumps) in USA under The Great Depression, a lot of characters are members of different mafia groups, there is blood and gore involved, also there is some comedy as well. The plot jumps in time and space all the time creating a puzzle of events you have to assemble in your head, which is a pretty interesting way to tell a story. In overall it reminds me of a somewhat more lighthearted version of Guy Ritchie's Snatch. It is a light novel adaptation that only covered a certain amount of the original work, so there are some loose ends here and there, but mostly it is consistent and self-contained. There are 13+3 episodes (+3 stands for Specials, also those are not simply Specials, but legit full blown episodes you absolutely have to watch to get the full picture).
Durarara!! is set in modern Ikebukuro, some characters from the cast are hight schoolers, the overall tone is much less gory (not much blood and no gibs unlike Baccano!). Still a large cast with couples, urban legends to uncover, street gangs to deal with or to join etc. As well it is based on a light novel series, also Durarara!! kinda begs for a second season plot-wise, still an absolutely awesome show. 24+2 episodes. I suggest you to start with Baccano! and, if you like it, definitely watch Durarara!! as well.

You might also enjoy Black Lagoon, it's a good shooting wild action and you can see affection slowly building up between main characters, also it's pretty subtle, there are already three seasons, yet no confessions so far.
