This will be the first of the themed mixtapes, and the theme will be:

Electronic

Rules:
- One song per person. If you can't choose, submit two songs and I will pick one.
- Post a link to the song you want. Mediafire, zShare, and MegaUpload are examples of file hosting sites. If you do not provide a link to your song, it won't be added to the mixtape.
- You must post your song in this thread. I will not accept songs sent to me through any other means.
- mp3 format only. No exceptions. High quality preferred. Recommended bitrate is 192kb/s, and minimum bitrate is 128kp/s. All songs below the required quality will be rejected.
-All songs must be under 10 minutes in length. Most of the time this won't be a problem, although if you do happen to have a song over 10 minutes, please choose something else.
- The deadline is 11:59PM Pacific Time, December 27, 2008. I will not accept song submissions after the deadline.
- Goal number of tracks is 12-20, and the limit is 25, so if you want your song included, post it early!

Tracklist as of December 28, 2008

Electronic.. my only weakness.. how did you know?

Seriously, I dislike most of the genre, but that just makes it more of a challenge..

I really dig the early German stuff (Kraftwerk et al..) though, and my favorite band (Legendary Pink Dots) dabbles in electronic sounds quite a bit, so I'll see what I can dig up.

LOL, I already know I don't like this (that album was painful). Although, if I remember correctly, that was the best track on it, which isn't saying much..

Oh man, I love Sparks and that's a song I haven't heard yet. They've tried many genres over the years, it doesn't surprise me they'd have some electronic as well. Should be interesting (and entertaining, which is a given for Sparks).

Decided to pass on both LPD and the Germans. Maybe some other time. Now, for my pick..

Silver Apples ~ Lovefingers

Note that this was released in 1968. I'll just copy/paste a blurb from wikipedia: "... one of the first groups to employ electronic music techniques extensively within a rock idiom, and their minimalistic style, with its pulsing, driving beat and frequently discordant modality, anticipated not only the experimental electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, but underground dance music and indie rock of the 1990s as well." And another one concerning their.. instrument setup: ""nine audio oscillators and eighty-six manual controls...The lead and rhythm oscillators are played with the hands, elbows and knees and the bass oscillators are played with the feet." Needless to say these two guys were electronic pioneers, way ahead of their time and very influential.

Thus ends your history lesson for today.

To those still using RapidShare, please use another hosting site. I'm usually subjected to waiting times whenever I try to download anything from RS.

Sorry, but there's a 10 minute limit on all songs. I probably should have mentioned this already, but I didn't expect anyone to actually upload a song that long. I'll add it to the rules.

If you have a similar song under 10 minutes, that would be great.

I'm doing the mixtapes, not you, and I can refuse any song for any or no reason if I like.

If you think you can do a better job than me, I welcome you to try. In fact you could start by doing #3.5 after I'm done #3, then you can do things your way instead of questioning mine.

The only way I can include the song is by editing it to the intended length, which I will do if Sonzai is okay with it. Otherwise he must upload another song.

I really do appreciate the way you're running these, and find your guidelines very reasonable. Didn't mean to question that.

Although, perhaps I was getting a little irritated there, my apologies. Just wondering how a song would play twice as long as it should.

96kp/s? I'll allow it this time but I'm not sure if everyone wants to listen to a track with quality that low. From #4 on I think I'll make the minimum bitrate 128kp/s and preferred bitrate 192kp/s.

MAL Mixtape #3 ready for download. This is the first themed mixtape, happy listening!

Also, slight change of plans on the themes. I will choose the theme for #4-5 as well. For #6-9, people can suggest themes and I'll pick the most popular theme or just pick one of the suggestions, depending on the situation. #10 will have a special theme that I'll announce in the #10 thread.

The best time to suggest themes for the next mixtape would be in the current thread. For example, suggestions for #6 will be open in the #5 thread, preferably after #5 is already done to avoid thread clutter.

Edit: Damn it, I screwed up a couple track number tags. Oh well, I'll fix everything when the time for re-uploading comes.

1. Mindless Self Indulgence - Mastermind: 3/10
I was already familiar with this band. Didn't like them before, don't like them now. They must exist solely to annoy the shit out of me.

2. Machinae Supremacy - Seventeen: 3/10
More metal than electronic, with cheesy guitar (and synth) lines and some awful singing.

3. Intro5pect - Oppressing You: 5/10
Punk with breakbeats, plus a vocoder near the end. Interesting.

4. E Nomine - Mitternacht: 6/10
Not sure why I like this. Guess I'm a sucker for choirs.

5. Sparks - Now That I Own the BBC: 6/10
Not one of their better tunes, but hey it's Sparks, so there are catchy melodies and amusing lyrics. Gotta love 'em.

6. Hearts of Black Science - Miles 2005: 8/10
Reminds me of the best synthpop of the 80s.. Depeche Mode, New Order.. which is a very good thing. Gave it a repeat listen before continuing. A top notch tune.

7. Silver Apples - Lovefingers: 9/10
My pick, love it, biased, etc..

8. Airlock - Revealing Some Interest: 6/10
I suppose you could call this instrumental trip-hop. Pleasant.

9. Amethystium - Fable: 5/10
A little bland and some of the synth tones used rub me the wrong way. Still, it has its pretty moments and the singing is good.

10. Global Communication - 8:07: 7/10
Ah, now this is more like it. Wouldn't quite call it ambient, but it's nice and mellow.

11. Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy: 8/10
Listening to Music Has the Right to Children several years ago left me cold, but I'm digging this track (and that other one Sonzai uploaded previously). Might need to give BoC another shot.

12. Andy Hunter - Amazing: 5/10
Huh.. suppose it's not bad for what it is. I'm honestly surprised I didn't hate this song. Normally can't stand this kind of music. Odd.

13. Umbrella - Olive: 1/10
Ugh.. sorry, but this is dreadful.

14. Tokyo Rave Crew - The Anthem (Heaven's Wire Mix): 1/10
House, trance.. whatever this dance/rave-y music is called, I cannot stomach.

15. Astral Projection - Flying Into A Star: 3/10
Slightly more bearable than the last two, but cripes, those pulse beats do my head in after a while.

16. Whitehouse - Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel: 1/10
I was too lenient with my rating of Birdseed. This is even worse than I'd remembered.

17. Motoro Faam - And Surface Runoff: 8/10
A breath of fresh air after the Whitehouse and quite lovely. Thanks to Neverender for the track choice and Kokonoe for its placement. Bravo.

18. !!! - Hello? Is This Thing On?: 7/10
Oh boy, do I like funk (really should go about getting some). Vocals are a bit meh, especially the guy freaking out near the end (one point off for that), but the music is fun so I don't mind so much.

19. The Moog Cookbook - 25 or 6 to 4: 7/10
This is hilarious. Complete novelty, but hilarious.

20. Kill Paradise - Fall From A Star: 3/10
Awful. Bonus point for the "man, I think that's hot" bit. I chuckled.

21. Sabrepulse - Horizons (Remix): 3/10
I think this is what people call chiptune? Isn't saying much, but it's less annoying than the other dance-y tracks, and the length helps.

22. Freezepop - Manipulate (Mastermind Mix): 6/10
Ha, cute. They sound a bit Kraftwerk-ish, although that may just be the robotic voice. Not a bad way to end the mix.

Wow, my opinions varied widely there. So I do like more electronic music than I previously let on.. I guess it's just similar to metal in that I'm very selective. But of course, a lot of these tracks weren't "straight" electronic, with a lot of genre mixing going on, which is cool by me. This turned out better than I expected, as always (good to keep those expectations low). Great job, everyone.
