THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Where to begin? Considering how old this movie is (1993), the animations were fantastic! Oh, but was it just me or did the "war" scene at their house a little too dark? Haha, I had trouble seeing anything at that time.

Speaking of the war scene. The use of the flash camera to fry the enemy's night vision was so clever, I was sitting on the edge of my seat! How thrilling! And the several times that blonde dude kept shooting at Coo, I was like "are you fucking kidding me?!" Seriously, he just would not calm down.

The very moment Blue got shot, shivers were rushing through my spine! Right then and there I knew shit was about to go down.

And finally, the ending. Right when the captain said they had found submarines, I knew Coo called for help, yet I still was suprised! You should've seen my face when all of those gigantic plesiosaurs popped their heads up like nobody's business. Coo choosing between Yousuke and his family was heartbreaking yet powerful. It was obvious who he'd choose, but man tears still leaked, man!

Wow. I didn't think I would love this anime so much! This was an amazing movie, I can't get over how little the views this title has. A truly hidden gem, I feel genuinely lucky to stumble upon this unknown masterpiece!

I give this 10 plesiosaurs out of 10

Side comment: at the beginning of the movie, I was kind of more interested in their fabulous life more than Coo, really. I mean c'mon! They live on a fucking island and swam with dolphins all day! Ah, what I would do for a life like that~

This was quite the surprise in that it's surprisingly very good but also it's surprising where the story goes. I didn't think a film about some kid discovering a live dinosaur would end up in the realms of military action. The first 30 minutes of this film are quite docile really and as @Alipio says I was more interested in the crazy life this family were living more than Coo haha.

But yeah the gun stuff was quite the shock when that all started to go down. And yeah the house invasion scene was waaay too dark. It looked cool when shots were fired though, very nicely animated.

I think if I had one criticism to throw at this film it would be the blonde guy from the IFL, I mean this dude was just a super shallow villain. And his motivations weren't always super clear beyond him being an asshole. I mean the scene at the end of him wanting to shoot Yosuke, I mean come on!? I get he was mad but damn. Also what the hell were the French Navy doing letting this clear psychopath walk around their ship! I mean he opened fire on Coo and then tried to kill a 12 year old kid. In fact he did both multiple times and yet the Navy just let him be.

I would have liked to see more at the end. Maybe some scenes inbetween the credits. They needn't had even been animated just some photo stills or something of the characters back on the island. Especially since it seems Cathy and the Father are getting together, which was abit weird but there you go.

Anyway overall I really liked this film, it's a tad long at 116 minutes, but the story while abit weird does carry it along. Though the first 30 or so minutes are abit slow by comparison. I was certainly thinking at that stage just how this film could last 2 hours but the eventual twists and turns do get it there and it was a fun ride.

Would certainly love to see this in HD one day.

8/10

Cute movie. A little bit longer than it should be. Also, pretty much Americanised. If Free Willy and Jurassic Park had a crossover in anime world, it would be this movie. Liked the character design a lot and the animation was decent.

Came here to comment this. From prolonged storyline to Western influence.

Additional thoughts for the topic:

The novel was released in '88 and the film in 1993, so the action heavy inspiration isn't too off the mark. Just a little strange for the theme. Somewhat stereotypical.

Actually, I was surprised at how entertaining this movie was. Despite some minor flaws, it still managed to have a fair bit of heart. The relationship between Yusuke and Coo is absolutely endearing.

The soundtrack is lovely, including a number by Julian Lennon. With the film presenting marine conservation activism, I can see why a few names like Lennon would be attached to it. Sometimes passion projects give me extra leeway to appreciate them, I wholeheartedly did for this one. Coo just melted my heart.
