Had my heart ripped out three times by this man!!! First, Voices (seriously, even as a man I have to admit I almost cried during this one. VERY CLOSE!!!) !! Then, the Place Promised!! And now, 5 Centimeters, which I knew what was coming and yet I still wished it didn't happen!! I hate Makoto Shinkai and at the same time I love him and his work.

So which is it for you? The one most dear. Voices, Place Promised, 5 Centimeters, or did She and Her Cat steal your heart? I am curious for the results to this one. So please, tell me.

Torn between Voices and 5 Centimeters. But forced to choose, I say.... ummmm... seriously, I want to say both.... but.... AHHHHHH!!!! Voices of a Distant Star!! There I said it.

I seriously think I should not have posted this thread on account that being forced to choose between masterpieces could cause heart failure. haha.

Hoshi no Koe~

well, I haven't seen all three parts of byosoku 5cm yet but, out of the three I have seen Voices wins by far.

but judging by the first part of 5cm/sec, it looks like there's a very high chance it won't be tops for long.

Same here lol? I preferred Place Promised better because it had a much stronger story than Byousoku and the Sci-Fi element was not at all a repulsive element, in fact it embellished it magnificently. But even Byousoku is beautiful in itself.

All his movies just makes me aware that my loneliness is nothing compared to these fictional characters... But its just a bliss to watch his movies and to listen to Tenmon's 天門 music.

It's between Voices and 5cm, though.

I'll have to go with my favorite movie, 5 cm. While I also love all his other works, nothing quite comes close to the feeling I get when watching that. Also, I believe both the animation and the soundtrack to be superior compared to the others, and I preferred the calm stories to all the sci-fi elements in Voices and Place Promised.

For me it would be 5 Centimeters Per Second. This movie was really good and the art was stunning.

I voted 5 Centimeter Per Second. For me, it was more stunning on the emotional realm. The feeling of loneliness really came through.

5 centimeters per second wins out for me. Voices was great, but Shinkai definitely does better without the scifi element. His most beautiful scenes were all in 5cm/s, and I think it was a lot more powerful in the end. Voices has a lot of it's own merits though. A half our of general perfection.

Simple and obvious logic would say thats because he made it YEARS after making voices. So of course he's improve greatly. If he were to have made 5cm when he made Voices, and made Voices recently rather than 5cm (if you switched them basically), then Voices would be the one with 'his most beautiful scenes'.

So i think thats a moot point to make. That goes for the majority of the people posting in the thread as well.

Yeah I get where you're coming from, but I don't think the point is moot. I don't evaluate animes based on how they could have been, I rate them based on how they are. Animation quality is part of that evaluation. Shinkai did in fact get better, and thus, 5cm/s has better animation, which is one of its strongest points.

But if it pleases you, I can give some other points as well. The soundtrack of 5 centimeters was simply unrivaled. Tenmon really went all out with it. Voices had a great soundtrack, but not quite at the same level. Furthermore, I think Shinkai did better to remove the scifi element from 5cm/s that he'd included in Voices. The symbols and metaphors he used in 5cm/s made it seem almost poetic. It was easily more thought provoking than Voices was.

I hate to say it, but unfortunately, you can't dumb down 5cm/s just because you think it's unfair to evaluate it based on Shinkai's improvement. We're trying to pick his best, so if he got better, that has to be part of the evaluation.

5 Centimeters Per Second. The beautiful animation aside, the story was extremely accessible and I connected with it on a personal level. The ending was so powerful that it was at the forefront of my mind a good week after watching it the first time and it still haunts me.

Well i saw 'Voices...' and '...Place Promised...' first and i really love Place Promised but i went into 5CM not actually expecting much; but i was simply blown away. The art topped the other two [especially the character animation] and the story was just the right length.

So for me it has to be 5CM but i must say i'm a huge Shinkai fan and considering i think his works have all improved over time; i'm really looking forward to his next vetnure!

I say 5 Centimeters Per Second.

In The Place Promised in Our Early Days (though it is still a great film) too much of the story is spent discussing the scientific parts of the story instead of exploring the characters.

In Voices of a Distant Star (from what I know I haven't watched it) they are literally millions of light years apart, but in the second story of 5 Centimeters Per Second, Cosmonaut, they are standing right next to each other, but couldn't be more distant.

I think he was meant for more contemporary work.

I have just watched Voices of a Distant Star, and my thoughts aren't changed. It was good, but Byousoku was much more enjoyable. The more plausible can affect your emotions much stronger. Things like Hoshi no Koe seem so far away, that it really doesn't feel like it matters. My decision is biased, though. Just before I had watched the first episode of Haibane Renmei and the difference in the production quality is a bit too much.

Things like these should be watched with a clear head. Comparing things is never right. You must treat each and every thing as if it were completely different.

I'm going to have to go with 5cm as well (although I haven't seen Voices...shame on me). At first, due to the screwed up order which I had watched his works and the amount of time between doing so I had thought Place Promised was roughly as good as 5cm, but after finally obtaining my copy of 5cm on DVD I definitely found it to be on another level due to Shinkai continuing to mature. From every aspect the film manages to hit it's mark, whether it be characters, themes, art and animation, music, and so on. It may not be as story focused as Place Promised, but I actually find that to be a strength considering I feel that Shinkai is at his best when focusing on characters rather than some hollow plot that seems of little to no importance compared to the feelings he is trying to convey. In conclusion, I find 5cm to be a beautiful film that manages to overshadow his other works despite their greatness, thus making it my favorite of the bunch.

I would say The Place Promised in Our Early Days. it is one of my favourite animes ever! and it was also the first MS anime I've seen.

You know that feeling when it seems like a piece of art was made just for you? well, I had it watching this. The story moved me in such a way that I kept dreaming of Hokkaido and the tower for months after seeing it.

Though 5cm made me cry as well :)

Well.. I'd say 5cm . Everything is perfect .. story , art , music ( yeah, I really liked the OST ) . The Place Promised is good too , but as someone above said too much of the time is spent on scientific stuff , so that's why I'd prefer 5cm .
Voices is amazing too , but I think the story is better developed in 5cm.

I loved Place Promised in our Early Days and 5 cm per Second (although I felt the last part wasn't nearly as good as the first two parts), but I still have to go with Voices which spoke to me on such a deeper level then the other two.

It really depends... Do you mean his best work? or his work that has had the most "impact"? For me 5 Centimeters per second is obviously the best when it comes to story, art and awesomeness.

But Voices of a Distant Star has definitely had the greatest amount of impact. Seeing all of the emotion he put into 25 minutes. The most emotion I have ever witnessed in any 25 minutes from any visual production. :D

5cm/s. even though a good ending romance anime (ended up being a lover or even marriage) is sweet thing. But i like it more when the show gives us more harsh, complex reality. the thing that we don't expect and moreover, we don't want it happens afterall. and 5cm/s did. :o
