There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one

Brotherhood sounds about right to me, too.

For only this year I'd say Madoka.

FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood had a huge support. Although, I am just guessing.
Or perhaps Haruhi Suzumiya.

With all the Edward Elric love out there, I'd say FMA:Brotherhood. Good story overall.

Since this year has barely started I am going to go back to 2009 and say K-ON!. The Japanese industry shows that TV ratings is only one way to track success of an anime but considering TV alone would be foolhardy and biased in favor of anime that airs in the day time. So long as anime movies, anime dvds, and anime merchandise are related to an anime's popularity/impact those must be considered when answering this question.

Jizzy as you would call yourself because youre a dick The most butthurt award goes to you And clearly you havent watched that many shows thats why you cant determine if a show is unique or not Or maybe you're just a child who likes common stuffs where hero saves the day and guys gets all the girls. Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

If we're going back to 2009, Bakemonogatari is worth mentioning.

But Meduka Meguca was the real big hit among people who aren't children/shonen fanboys just in it for the meat punching.

I came into this thread looking for recommendations, because I haven't watched anime in over a year, then realised 'popular' doesn't necessarily mean 'good. :|

I'm going to count "the last two years" as 2010 + 2011, and I'm not going to count sequels, so no K-ON here.

2010: ...The Borrowers? Ika-Musume? Really, I don't think that 2010 had many mega hits. Actually, it's probably Durarara, but still, it doesnt come close to...

2011: Madoka probably wins here, but AnoHana and Tiger + Bunny would probably be popular enough to seriously compete for the 2010 title, though they probably still fall short.

@TenkaseiRyo:

Don't the TV rankings only tell us what's popular with the kids family, and other non-otaku? I mean, it's obvious that an anime that airs at 17:00 is going to get better ratings than one that airs at 25:00 simply because more people are actually watching TV at that time. And what about Gundam AGE? Is that flopping or something, as I would imagine that any Gundam, regardless of fan reaction, would affect the TV ratings.

You really have to look at the DVD/Blu-ray sales to see what's popular among Otaku, and Madoka wins, followed by Durarara.

Of course, Gundam Unicorn (which had the best sales last year) counts as a sequel, as it's an UC work, but Gundam AGE can probably count as a new work because it's set in an new AU, and with the controversy, I can see it being less popular than SEED or 00 at least.

Depending on the definition of "popular".

If we are only talking about the native audience size, then probably some shonen fighting series that I'm not familiar with.

If we are talking about popularity by MAL's definition, just go on the Top Anime page, select "most popular", disqualify the older ones, depending on your interpretation, and there they are.

If we are talking about popularity on these forums, and other similar communities, then the question is meaningless, because everyone is so hyper-sensitive about not overrating anything, that anything notably popular would get a sizeable anti-fandom, balancing it out, so it's difficult for the whole community to uniformly prefer something on a long term.

Madoka Magica pretty much racks up the prize money for this one. Followed by Steins;gate and the absurdly anticipated Fate/Zero.
