Wow it's only been 2 episodes and I'm already bored of this, I dunno how Gainax managed to make the same jokes sound like I've heard them for 10 billionth time even though it's only been 2 episodes. LOL Panty is a whore, LOL Stocking likes sweets, I fucking get it. Nice experiment Gainax, but ultimately it's a failure.

ME NEITHER.

I'm actually really glad I didn't drop this. I think GAINAX has a lot in its bag of tricks that we haven't seen yet, even though the first ep had so much poop/puke jokes, I was about ready to drop.

This episode was pretty great. I loved the Japanese take on "American high school" with QUEEN BARBY. Did anybody else notice the "sex ed/health class" was JUST LIKE Mean Girls? "Don't have sex. You will get pregnant, and die. Okay, everyone take some rubbers."

The second ep was great, too... I like when Panty & Stocking work together (tracking down Panty's sex tapes), though those little bitches always back-stab each other in the end. XD

The stories are pretty boring. Extremely simplistic and straightfoward to the point of being unenjoyable. It's like the 'plot' is only there so there's an excuse to show off the animation and stupid toilet humour. Sure, each story is only ~12 minutes, but US cartoons of a similar style have been able to use their time far better to tell stories that aren't dead boring.

I think you're confusing US cartoons with Japanese anime. Sure panty and stocking strays from the usual type of anime of this decade. But it is definitely a perfect representation of the US cartoons we see today. The only US cartoon that almost fits your description is Avatar, which doesn't even follow the 2 - 12 minute story episode quota. Panty and Stocking is just something different from Gainax. don't be mad because they didn't feel like creating another TTGL.

No. Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Fairly OddParents, Spongebob. Same format. Superior storytelling. My description was pretty loose and the only thing you could sort of think of was Avatar? *rolls eyes*

And you're wrong.

I've already acknowledged that the story is a secondary consideration. Just because I made note of the plot doesn't mean that's the main reason I watch it. I'm not even complaining about a shitty plot. I'm complaining about a boring show. How is it boring? The stories are boring.

No, Panty and Stocking has about as much depth as them.

Each half episode starts off with a goal, there is a problem followed by a big build up and then a sudden twist at the end that completely foils the original goal of that half episode.

Panty and Stocking want to have their movie premiere without a hitch so that their careers may blossom. Panty reveals her porno and they go off to eradicate it from the face of the Earth. Panty then rejects Stocking from the movie at the very last minute and Stocking ruins Panty's career with the very thing they sought to destroy.

Dexter wants to learn French to impress everyone in French class. He leaves a tape on all night to try and learn the language overnight while in his sleep, but the tape gets stuck on a certain phrase. The next day all Dexter can say is that one phrase in French and nothing else, but after a series of coincidences while in French everyone loves him because that one phrase is always the answer to everything. Dexter then accidentally knocks his head and forgets the phrase and reverts to how he was the previous day. His popularity leaves him and he is once again a laughing stock in French class.

It is exactly the same story telling style with exactly the same amount of depth.

Probably why I love this so much. I fucking loved that episode of Dexter's Lab, and the show as a whole. It's easily one of my favourite kids shows of all time and I'd happily buy them on DVD if they ever released them. Still annoyed that last time I checked they aren't available.

Oh, and the scene in the Sex and Daten City part of this episode where Stocking eats pudding and squees is the most adorable thing I've seen in a long time. Extreme cuteness overload.

Good thing I'm not talking about ~depth~ here. And I know they have the same storytelling style - that's why I compared them. I do find that summary of the episode of Dexter's Lab to be far more interesting than what has been show in PSG so far, though. The episode even took more words to be summarized =P

I don't see the average Americen cartoon from the 90's has any superiority to P&S, considering the fact that they have the same exact story telling style.

It took more words to summarize because a whole lot less happened. In actuality, there was only two settings in that episode and only one main character was focused on. The reason it took twice as many words to summarise is because those reading this forum topic should be already aware of the plotline in this episode of P&S. They may not be familiar with Dexter's Lab, nor that episode. Naturally I needed to type more.

I could have easily said:

Dexter tried to learn French over night to become popular, his plan was successful. He then forgot French due to an accident the next day and lost his popularity.

Your summary leaves out the important point:
The next day all Dexter can say is that one phrase in French and nothing else, but after a series of coincidences while in French everyone loves him because that one phrase is always the answer to everything.

Which itself is explained by:
He leaves a tape on all night to try and learn the language overnight while in his sleep, but the tape gets stuck on a certain phrase.

The PSG summary doesn't leave anything out. You could list all the places they visited but then you'd have to list all the things that Dexter responded to.

Dexter's Lab can only focus on one main character cuz there is only one main character. If fewer things happen, it takes fewer words to summarize. If a greater number of events happen but the overall story is more simplistic, with fewer important details, it may take fewer words to summarize.

The superiority doesn't lie in the story-telling STYLE. It lies in the stories that were told. I was making a joke about the number of words it took to summarize the episode, but I found Dexter's story itself to be far more interesting than what PSG had to offer. What? I didn't know it was debatable that can I find certain things more interesting than others.

No, that wasn't exactly important to that plotline. What was important was that he gained popularity, then suddenly lost it at the end, which defeats the purpose of the episode entirely.

The PSG summary doesn't leave anything out. You could list all the places they visited but then you'd have to list all the things that Dexter responded to.

Well, I did leave out that Panty is significantly more popular than Stocking, which leads to Stocking being the one to urge the pair of them to clean up Panty's mistake, which leads to no disappointment at Panty being left out of the movie due to Panty being significantly popular due to the double-edged sword which is publicity before a large premier. Panty's rising popularity is both what allowed for the story to happen and what ended the story, however they were on two completely different notes.

Dexter's Lab can only focus on one main character cuz there is only one main character. If fewer things happen, it takes fewer words to summarize. If a greater number of events happen but the overall story is more simplistic, with fewer important details, it may take fewer words to summarize.

Deedee is just as important to Dexter's Laboratory as Dexter. She is both the character closest to him, and his biggest enemy, being the only person other than Dexter himself always constantly appearing in his secret lab. She also plays a major part in the opening credits of each episode, in fact she is the first character to appear and the only character to appear for 12 of the 30 second opening.

You are right on the storytelling front. It is correct that both Dexter and PS&G have the same level of depth. Meaning barely any. However when stories lack depth they must at least make up for that by being entertaining though some means.
Now lets analysis PS&G.
In characters it fails. Panty's main personality traits are being a bitch and screwing. Stocking likes to eat. Gatherbelt is just there as a mission giver. While that sounds fun on paper it becomes tiresome on screen. With characters lacking any good personality traits it renders them unlikeable. And how can you give a damn about the adventures of two selfish bitches? If I wanted to see that I would watch that show....whats it called......the simple life?
In visuals it fails. Say what you will, I still think it looks damn ugly. The only time I find good in this department would be when panty or stocking is shown in that different art style.
In comedy it fails. Like I said before. Toilet humor can only get so far. Sex jokes can be found anywhere. If you are going to joke about shit and sex then at least make it funny. All this looks like at the moment is a giant "fuck you" to American cartoons. That's all well and good but I would have preferred that they spend the money and effort on a show that was actually entertaining.

No matter how I look at it I can't seem to find anything redeemable in this. I appreciate when people try something different. But this.....is just shit.

Yeah i mean this can't go on for more than 5 episodes and not get boring. As someone else already said, toilet humor can go so far. And truth be told maybe it's not the best toilet humor because am not laughing that much.

And the fact that everyone wants a transformation scene just shows that anime art is superior to any shitty like western art. That's one of the reasons why we watch anime isn't it? Yeah i know they tried to be different but am not impressed. Making a dirty version of power-puff girls isn't what i call the most initiative thing ever.

This show is really pretty funny, I'm enjoying it a lot. I think it's meant to be taken lightly. People complaining that it doesn't have as much depth as they would have liked are seriously looking in the wrong place: this is based off American cartoons so strongly that I don't doubt the plot will progress like one. It's pure entertainment. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but it isn't something to take seriously!

Anyway, I liked this episode a lot more than the first. Loved the 2001 ASO reference: "they were using it to educate this thing..." Brilliant.

The anime superiority thing falsely assumes that we all watch anime exclusively. I don't demand great art if such is not meant to be a selling point. In a show like this as long as I laugh the mission is accomplished. I won't lie, this isn't the best show I've ever watched in this style. Dexters lab has been an ongoing comparison, I find that show hilarious in addition to being associated with many childhood memories and nostalgia. This show is no dexters lab, but it is humorous and enjoyable. Not every painting can be the mona lisa, this is a fine show.

If it's not to your tastes that's fine, but this whole superiority of the japanese art style is kind of ridiculous. The reason we have multiple art styles is because we're not always trying to accomplish the same thing with our art. The Japanese art style you are referring to has only even been in place for like ten years, if that. Anime didn't look like it does now when I joined and I liked it back then too.

Haven't seen the movie, but it seems pretty plausible that it could be put together without having seen the movie. It's about the most basic joke anyone could make about sex education. "Don't have sex you'll get aids and die. Here's a condom." Instant comedy. This being said I have not seen the movie, maybe the similarities go farther than I'm giving it credit for.

You're missing the point here: What recent anime have you watched where the main characters are both bitches and totally immoral? That's right, you haven't seen anything like it recently because for the last few years nothing like it has really existed (coming from Japan, that is). Panty and Stocking aren't made of sugar, spice and everything nice. They're made of lust, gluttony and everything vile, almost as if they're a 2010 spin on the 90's American cartoon (the 2010 spin being closer to popular shows such as South Park, Family Guy, American Dad and the such. Well known cartoons from today).

Oh wow, you really think the Powerpuff Girls art style looks awful? What the hell man? That's just hating for the sake of hating. Yeah, we all get it, "Amerikun cart00nz suckz0rz!!!1!11!!1!"

Well, sorry Mr. High Brow but comedy is actually the lowest form of entertainment. There is no such thing as classy comedy. Have you actually seen stand-up? Panty & Stocking is literally in the same league with a stand-up style of humour.

Honestly, the show is strangely entertaining though I find that not much of the show is funny beyond a few chuckles here & there and the occasional "Did that actually happen? Let me show a friend & we can go over it again.". The whole show certainly brings an interesting spin into the pool of anime we have been getting & additionally is equally worthy of Gainax' usual 'WTF' lineup (be it in a good, bad, or ambiguous manner) but that's all I get out of it so far. I'll keep watching b/c (I hope) it stays as strangely entertaining each week, but it's not getting too high of a score from me by the end at this rate. =/

The girls are funny and the humor are nice
too bad that he animation style looks like colorful garbage most of the time
I would enjoy this a lot more with another animation style

In the next episode I will decide about dropping or not dropping this.

Oh M. Night Shyamalan, you must be the only director in history so bad that your name is a punchline...
