The book I'm reading currently til I get the final book in The Faithful and the Fallen, I'm reading Plantagenet, history of England Kings.

My mind is a bit vague when trying to remember the detail but in the beginning, I think William the conqueror lost his son over the seas when both the sons and the crew handling the ship were drunk and it startled from there

Interesting read if you like history of england

Recently finished the Dragon Heir and the Wizard Heir, couldn't buy the first part, but the last part is really long threaded and actually pretty boring, I just liked the second part the Wizard Heir, I also have this feeling that the Warrior Heir was pretty boring as well. Might lend it at the library.

Reading Rashomon by Ryuunosuke Akutagawa . It's really great . picked it up because of akutagawa's character in stray dogs .
Is it the "Rashomon and 17 other stories" collection? There are so many great stories in there. Rashomon probably wouldn't make my top ten, although it's still good.

Only read Rashomon and another one which is about character testaments .

Anyways, ok so I bought a bunch of books from the library after being motivated by an anime/manga to read them .
Crime and Punishmemt by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (600+ pages , damn)
The Double By Fyodor Dostoyevsky
The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald
A Collection of Edgar Allan Poe stories

I'm kinda at a loss where to start, but I might start with the Great Gatsby

I just finished Anna Karenina.

Quite, quite disappointed, but it was okay I guess (a 6.5 out of 10). Anna was quite (read:very) annoying, especially at the end with her absurd behaviour. Levin's story was only interesting when he was suffering, after which it became boring. I'm no sadist, but that's honestly how I felt. He's still the best character though. Vronsky was just drab. Alexey Alexandrovich had a point in time where he was "magnanimous" and I leaned towards liking him, but even that passed. Stepan Arkadyevitch's philosophy was interesting, and I would have liked to see more of him.

I'd say that all the characters were well-rounded, but I couldn't care much for them nonetheless. Actually, I'd say it did too much of that. For example, the painter that Vronsky hired to do a portrait of Anna. Perhaps a bit of a backstory would be alright, but there was no reason to expound on his character so far, especially when he didn't even show up for the rest of the book. That just makes it harder to get to the end of the story. The political/economic aspect was long and tedious too. Then again, I was expecting a romance novel, and it turned out that it wasn't actually one. I guess that's my bad.

Seeing as how War and Peace is even longer, I'm definitely going to avoid it.

On a side note: I've started the first book in the Hannibal Lecter series - Red Dragon. Really looking forward to The Silence of the Lambs.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. I'm enjoying it, but sometimes the nadsat makes it a bit hard to follow. Most of the time when its used right you can tell what its referring to anyway.

Finished reading Lolita. Seems to be the most popular book on this site...
It was pretty good, but I'll definitely have to reread it in the future because I didn't get 60% of the references and well, references make up a large part of this novel.

And wow, this book sure was depressing. I could hardly find a sympathetic character with a magnifying glass. An egoistic, lying pedophile, a manipulative, rotten girl, a mother who hates her own daughter, and a golden boy who kidnaps a teen from a pedophile...only to have seks with the girl and force her to be a porn star later. What a cast, man.

I wouldn't say it was bad, or most disappointing. But I'm not denying the presence of disappointment. It's just extremely weird and edgy. It's not that bad though, something mediocre at best.

Recently finished Swiss Family Robinson. It was okay. All of the sons kind of blurred together into one character, or clones of the same character. I think I would have liked it more if I had read it while I were young. Some of the word choices were really antiquated. Not sure if I'd recommend reading it.

Currently reading Scipio Africanus, it's a biography of the young Roman that defeated Hannibal. Pretty interesting so far. I've always enjoyed reading about antiquity.

Also, was at the bookstore's clearence section today and got two pretty cool hardcover edition books at 50% off because they had slight tears on their dust covers. Was pretty excited about that.

I remember starting that book but never finishing it. I might have to revisit it. Please post your thoughts when you're done.

OT: I'm reading the Sword of Shannara. I'm more than halfway through the book and it's been one of the duller fantasies I've read. I just saw that it was a New York Times bestseller, but definitely haven't been feeling it. The writing style is not particularly immersive either.

Logically, you have all the time. Going on a forum is the product of too much time in one's hands.

But you have time to basically argue about not having time? Seriously, going on an anime forum pretty much screams too much free time. If your little brain cannot handle basic human functions, I feel truly sorry.

I'm a 'cave man' because you can't understand what I just said. The use of "factually" surprised me there, but the "a fuck ton smarter than you" blew my mind. I bet my life your IQ is 200+.

For someone 'a fuck ton smarter' than me, a primate, your role as the intellectual person here to educate me. You should care, since sharing knowledge is what makes you smart, not just knowing.

I mean, it's fine if you don't want to read books, but what's the point of coming in here and shitting on other people's hobbies?

Besides, internet sources are valid only to a certain point. The Internet as most people know it is largely an institution of English, which engenders a various obvious Euroamerican Western bias that cannot be easily escaped.

It's the most popular book on this site because people here only know Nabokov's Lolita because of its perverted fantasies and "exquisite prose."

It's far from being close to his best novel. It's kind of frustrating that the emigre's legacy has been confined to this one novel, and even more so that people praise it to the heavens without having consumed the rest of his oeuvre!

@rubylightning Stop trying so hard. Relax. Eat your vegetables.

All I am reading at the moment is Sailor Moon. However, the last book I read was A History of the Crusades Vol. 1 by Steven Runciman. I thought it was interesting. It's very easy to pick up and tells a lot of interesting anecdotes, which is my favorite part of history. The author has a bias towards the Byzantines, and he'll constantly characterize the crusaders as barbarian and primitive next to their civilization. Even as someone who thinks the Byzantines are interesting, it was bit much at times.

As someone who doesn't know very much about the crusades, I enjoyed it. It's probably not worth reading for anyone who knows a decent amount, however.

The last fiction book I read was Fahrenheit 451, which was an assigned book from school. I enjoyed the read and thought it had some interesting things to say about society, particularly how we have become easily distracted and dislike reflection. I don't usually enjoy dystopian fiction. Perhaps the reason I enjoyed this one was because it's concerns are still relevant today.

I finished recently The Witch from Portobello by Paolo Coelho (my plan is to read every single book from Paolo Coelho and to own it (just 2 books (The Spy and Adultery) more if he doesn't write another one before I get them).
Now I'm reading Hazarski rečnik (The Dictionary of Khazars) by late Milorad Pavić (best modern writer (počivaj u miru velikanu), he almost got Nobel prize). I can't even explain how good this book is. So so so sooo interesting. There are more than 2 million ways to read this book. It's about old civilization called Khazars and nobody knows which religion they actually took before their own disappeared. Christians think it's Christianity, Jews Judaism and Muslims Islam. Book has female and male version. Both versions are divided on 3 parts: red pages=Christianity, green pages=Islam and yellow pages=Judaism (and few blue pages Appendix). Each part have different versions about same people and stories. And like it always is, one religion don't have much information about other people of different religions even though they also took a part in mystery of Khazars.
On the first page of book is writen: Na ovom mestu leži onaj čitalac koji neće nikada otvoriti ovu knjigu. On je ovde zauvek mrtav. (trans. Here lies the reader who will never open this book. He's here forever dead.)
Can't there be more genius writers like Milorad Pavić instead of quasi ones that write weekend romances and bland fantasy actions?

revenge of the sith by stover

this book is kind of amazing? i mean, duh - space violence, but the look into anakin's headspace, the dead-star dragon and how tragic it all is, because anakin? was the sort of person who made friends with a r2 unit, who despite his fear went in to save a friend without a second thought against terrible odds, refused to leave another friend behind and was genuinely good, if extremely overprotective of those he loved... lucas could've definitely, definitely done better by anakin skywalker
