It's no secret that each demographic has it's signature styles and tropes that appeal to their target audience, and while it's not uncommon for shows to inculed elements that may also appeal to demographics other than their own, who the target audience is is generally quite straigh foweard

But... every now and then, you'll come across the so called "odd one out", things that feel so out of place they'll make you question how in the seven hells they ended up published where they are

Shounen, has a triad of such anime

Black Butler - Vanitas - Moriarty The Patriot

Yeah, you ain't gonna tell me that going into these blind you wouldn't think they are shoujo/josei

Are there any other anime you think are the odd ones out in their demographic?

If we talk about the de-facto target audience, all three shows are aimed at teenage girls.

The confusion arises from the fact that sometimes the formal target audience (the magazine in which the work is published) does not coincide with the actual one.

Aria - shounen
Petshop of Horrors - josei

These two could easily be seinen. To be fair, the seinen demographic has by far the largest variety so anything could work in it.

If I didn't knew it better I'd think Chihayafuru was a Shoujo instead of a Josei. And Apothecary Diaries could have been part of a Josei instead of a Seinen magazine too.

I fully agree about Vanitas and Black Butler. I didn't watch Moriarty the Patriot yet but based on the character design it could fall into the same category too.
