I have some friends who will mention their fear that they'll run out of anime that's interesting to them, and sometimes I wish I had that problem too. I'm the exact opposite, there is so much anime I'm interested in. Long running shonen adaptations? Magical girl shows for little girls? Mecha with big sci-fi concepts? I'm in for all of it. I love all kinds of anime, and there the problem starts. I start feeling choice paralysis about what to watch because there are so many potential options, and then I don't watch anything. What are some ways to get over this issue?

Watch everything at slow pace. 2-3 episode of the long running, 2-3 of the mahou shoujo, 2-3 of the mecha that way all 3 are in progress.

I kinda get what you mean but sometimes you just feel like watching this anime you had in your watchlist for years and you do it. You can also make a list, a schedule or challenge yourself by imposing a specific list order. Or you can choose if you prefer to watch the more/less popular one before or the one you heard the most/least about first, etc.

Mmm I think watching multiple at once each of different genres is fine. Aside from that, an existential crisis about dying tomorrow will occasionally give more motivation to finish a show you really want to watch.
No watch list sig cuz "You watch anime in 3 days or 3 months! Such is the proper way!"

Press play on any.
Gamble them, with something like https://www.random.org/
Go episode by episode of one or two.
Develop a taste that hates 99% of what you watch, and drop some of them.

The list will never end. So you can just watch at your leisure pace.

Simple designs - make a list of interesting anime and watch randomly from them. If brain still can't decide, so create different tiers of priority in this list. If brain still can't decide, so maybe you just don't want to see anime right now))

Just stick to one category of anime shows and only try watching all of those.

Imagine for a moment eating ramen noodles every day for three months straight...

I had to do that back in college in the late 90s because I was young and dumb and didn’t budget shit. Ended up blowing money on pointless stuff I didn’t need, and yeah, it came back to bite me in the ass hard. lol

People who dive headfirst into anime and binge it constantly like it's water might not ever run out of stuff to watch, but they’ll almost definitely hit a wall where they lose the motivation to keep hunting for something new. Especially after they've knocked out all the big titles or personal must-watches at the top of their list.

At some point, I would imagine it stops feeling like fun discovery and starts feeling like scrolling through a never-ending menu, hoping something grabs their attention. It’s not a lack of content, it’s content fatigue.

Sometimes the best fix isn’t to push through it, but to slow down. Rewatch something you love. Watch nothing for a few days. Or set a weird rule for yourself, like only watching OVAs from the '80s for a week. Give your brain a pattern break. Otherwise, it's just ramen every day, even if it's technically a different flavor. lol

So the question is, do you seriously want to get to that point?

I would say this is applicable to me, more in general. I have so many anime I want to watch, I have so many 40k/fantasy and sci fi books I want to read, I need to play x game, I need to keep working on my drawing, I need to read x history book, and with limits of time and real life responsibilities, you don't get anywhere near doing any of the stuff you wanted to do.

Scheduling can help. Right now I am doing more reading, so I am prioritizing that I need to finish x book. Once I get back to anime, I will try to say hey we should try to fix x in a week or two. Or by the end of this year, we need to have these titles checked out. Just telling yourself hey I am going to x for 1 hour helps......That said.....I am struggling to follow through with this lol. Will keep trying.

If it is too heavy, just acceptance...Enjoy the moment, it's okay to not get around to everything you want to. I think I am at that point.

I agree that, a massive consumerist mindset isn't healthy, and you may actually ensure you burn out if you approach in it that way. For me when I say schedule it's more, make time to do things you like, rather than get distracted and waste your free time.

there's over 10k animes. the only possible thing is getting burnt out of watching anime but you'll never run out of watching interesting animes unless you're the type who restrict himself to a certain genre and topic and doesn't watch anything outside that. i've seen people who'll only watch action or only watch slice of life's and nothing else. if you restrict yourself then of course you'll run out of stuff to watch and even lose interest over time because you've watched so much of the same stuff. that's why you are supposed to watch everything. i watch everything, i never run out of animes to watch or lose interest. its ridiculous to restrict yourself to stuff you like watching without exploring what else is out there. the world of anime is big and colorful so go and indulge in it for there is enough to fill you up and keep wanting more.

To me it doesn't matter, I am at such point that no matter if anime is complete garbage or a world's best masterpiece. When I want it, I'll watch it regardless the case.

Its impossible to run out of anime. They're like 50 seasonal each season so about 200 new anime each years + over 10k anime already out for you to watch. So many hidden gems to watch.

Look at some member list to find people with similar tastes. If you rate your favorites the same way, there's a good chance you'll like the anime he rated 10 too that you don't know. Do this a few times and you'll end up with a mountain of stuff to watch.

For your problem, I often use a randomizer to figure out which anime I'm going to watch next. You can also focus on seasonal. If you watch 3 episode of seasonal each days (1 hour) at the end of the season you'll end up with 21 anime completed.

You're never going to run out of things to watch and you're never going to be able to watch everything, so, yeah, slowly and surely work your way through the stuff that you think there's a good chance you're really going to like. Maybe keep some space for recommendations from people whose taste your trust, or who know your taste well. Keep a couple of slots for really well-considered anime that may not appeal to you but is either immensely popular or critically acclaimed.

I know what you mean for sure
There definitely seems to be so many shows to watch that you sometimes wonder will you be able to watch all that+new stuff is coming out and it's not easy to keep up with it
I'd say experiment with it,whenever you decide what you're gonna watch pick some anime that is a different genre/demography than the previous one,try to balance shorter shows(12-24 eps)and longer shows(100+eps)also don't always go for watching something new, sometimes go back and rewatch, personally i grew to love certain shows the more i watched them despite maybe not liking them that much for the first time

It's called the curse of choice. There's so much choice that you can't choose, and so you lose the ability to consume and appreciate what you like.

ask a friend here on mal to pick a random number - for example: 1-100 corresponding to the anime asigned to the number or u could just draw yourself by asigning numbers to anime u want to watch

sometimes its just mood ....what kind of anime do u feel like getting into & watching??...go by genre/themes

what anime gets u excited things like that

Damn... I am thinking that I won't live enough, or that the internet will be destroyed in a nuclear war in the close future and everything will be lost, and that there are many anime I planned to watch but never watch until then, and here there are peoples afraid that they will run out of interesting anime XD

@Tsumikiss Anime in general - yes, they will never end, but the number of interesting anime (for you personally) is definitely not endless and it depends on your personal preferences.

Nobody said you have to watch all of it. Most shows are made for a specific demographic. Just watch the shows which cater you.

Yeah, it is actually insane how much good shit there is out there. I'm watching 9 shows this season (which I can barely keep up with) and every single one is amazing.

I knew a girl, back when I was 20 years younger. That girl tended to be quite indecisive, but also self-aware, hence she rolled a dice whenever she had difficulties choosing something. It worked well for her, so maybe it light work well for you as well.

Man I don't even think that would be possible honestly at this point. If you're willing to watch both modern and retro anime you just have too much on your plate or I don't think you'll ever get bored. Burnout sure, but I don't think you'd ever run out of anything to watch.

Sounds like a neuro atypical dilemma.

Just start with something, I know it feels like the end of the world but just start. Try to be a little impulsive even, go with a tiny impulse or feeling of what you might wanna see in that moment.

@Retro8bit Burnout indeed. I watch almost everything, new, old, weird, all demographics. And had a 2 year break from anime since I just had so much I wanted to see and overloaded. So I stuck to manga and now I'm back with anime and the break was refreshing

At least you never feel like you'll run out, that's probably a good thing. I have 100+ anime in my PTW list, but it's hard to choose an order.

I just tend to go with my mood in the end, like whether I feel like watching slice of life, romance, drama, action, etc at that moment.
